  • unlocked corei7-860 - possible?

hi guys 1st post here :)

    i have a strange situation
prebuilt pc with stock hsf (yea so bored to do it)
    i7-860
    ga-p55 ud4 rev1
    8g geil 2133
    asus 5870
    corsair p64 ssd
    wd-green 1tb
    ----------------
updated latest bios today ver f3k
    pc booted @ 2.5g (x15 mutliplier) - strange
got in to bios put the max x22 and voila

    idle

    load

    all else auto
so wtf i don't want to overclock, reliability is for me the outmost since i do 3D is that dangerous? do i really have an unlocked processor?
im not into oc but i know the basic/terms of it and how to do it and this seems an unlocked one - should i rma?
run prime95 blend and got a temp of 71max on pc.
same happen with previous bios ver f2 (the one it shiped except the bclk @ auto is the expected 133 and not 136 mhz) i just flashed f3k for the improved usb compatibility - do i qualify for an rma? contact gigabyte? what - plz help this is confusing me.
i prefer a stock pc with all stock

its normal the cpu will overclock itself as turbo kicks in its standard feature with all i7 chips, the i7 860 and 870 overclock more in turbo boost than the i7 920's

      heh m8
the cpu doesn't turbo it self i did
actually in bios if i leave the intel trubo tech @ auto it doesnt turbo
if i set enabled it does for a whopin 3.6 ghz
now can u explain if i set multipier to x9 i get a 1.2 ghz cpu? and not @ idle only
in bios [mit] cpu-z etc. now my cpu is default x22[i set it] with auto fsb [bclk] 136.7 mhz and turbos to 3.55~ ghz

          Re: unlocked corei7-860 - possible?

If you have 4 cores enabled in the bios but don't have C3/C6 C-states enabled, an i7-860 will be limited to a maximum multiplier of 22X and it should be steady at that setting. Either your bios will allow you to select a 22X multiplier directly like the Asus bios does and then it automatically also enables turbo boost for you or you will need to select the default 21X multiplier and enable turbo in the bios manually. Either method should give you the same 22X multiplier full time.

The multiplier you get at idle will depend on whether C1E is enabled and in Vista and Windows 7 you also need to adjust the Control Panel -> Power Options -> Minimum processor state accordingly. I set this to 5% if I want the multi nice and low at idle and I set it to 100% if I don't. Play with this while using i7 Turbo and you should be able to see the effect these settings have on your multiplier. In XP to get SpeedStep to work correctly, you might need to set your power options so that it thinks your CPU is a mobile processor. Weird but it works.

On the Asus P6T series of X58 boards, there was a problem during extreme overclocking with lots of MHz and core voltage, that the turbo mode would start to cycle on and off. When you were really pushing things to the edge of self destruction, the turbo mode would become completely disengaged so a Core i7-920 would be limited to the default 20X multiplier. This turbo throttling is part of the Intel design spec so it's likely that the new P55 boards will have something very similar. Some motherboards let you turn this throttling off if you understand the risk and other boards don't let you turn this safety feature off.

I'm not yet sure what P55 board has what bios options to control this.

When playing around with this stuff, use a BCLK near the default of 133 so if you enable C3/C6 and your multiplier starts to cycle up to 26X, you won't have to worry about a crash when it's booting up.

            Re: unlocked corei7-860 - possible?

omg tnx man yes it is true exactly the way u told - thank u very much for the answer.

so either set default 21x multi and the select enabled in bios for turbo or set multi to x22 and bios set to auto for turbo will enable it eitherway.

the auto setting for bclk gives me a "default" of 136.7 mhz is that too much an "auto" overclock the mb does?

              26 x 136.7 = 3554.2 MHz, so you r getting 26x and u have C3/C6 enabled if u see 3.6
              26 x 133 = 3458 MHz

Hard to know. My reading of that website quote would be that if you do have crashes on bootup, reduce to 133 or turn off C3/C6, whichever preferred.
