EX58-UD3R Will not POST

Hi All. Have run into a problem that I cant seem to resolve. This is the first time I've used a GIGABYTE board for a build. The build was working fine for a few months until Windows XP blue screened. Tried to reboot, booted, blue screen straight into XP loading, tried Safe mode, rebooted, went to BIOS safe defaults, tried to reboot, blue screen.
The system was set up for dual boot XP/Vista64 on separate drives. Booted into Vista, tried to reboot and received message from BIOS something on the order "Scanning hard drive for BIOS Image". The system went through rebooted "Scanning hard drive for BIOS Image" a couple of times.
Now it wont POST at all. The four PHASE LED's stay lit and the speaker is emitting periodic clicks but no beeps. I have tried a different power supply, all devices out, re-seated the CPU, down to one stick of RAM (tried all 3 in different combos) The system layout is

EX58-UD3R
INTEL Core i7-920 (SLBEJ)
OCZ DDR3 Platinum 1600 6GB
OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W PSU
Cooler Master Hyper N520 CPU cooler

Its looking like I'm going to have to RMA the board, but if its something else I'd rather know now than find out with a new board :) Any help would be appreciated as GIGABYTE support seemed to have lost my email :(

Oh I read somewhere else about someone who had the "Scanning drive" issue and they suggested putting the latest BIOS image on a drive and trying to boot. Tried this...no luck. Thanks.

try clearing the cmos with the blue illuminated button at the back,power down pc and press it reboot,also you can clear it by shorting the two pins on motherboard next to the battery again power off pc and hold screwdriver across the pins to clear it then reboot

Oops should have mentioned that. I tried to clear the CMOS settings, both with jumper short and (not that it would make a diff) taking the battery out. Same issue.

have you checked cpu heatsink is fitted propperly? as if its not it will overheat causing shutdown?? its worth a try

Yup tried that as well. With two drives in fact, one with nothing except the BIOS image on it. The thing that gets me is that GIGABYTE go on about the "dual BIOS", so if the main BIOS was corrupted the back up should work, not sure why such as set up would need to scan the HD for an image.

it will scan the hard drive if its selected to do it in the bios,it can be switched off but it wont let you get in the bios will it? maybe it would back itself up if hd bios back up wasnt enabled

One of the first steps I took was to reseat the CPU and the heat sink. I havent had cooling issues with this set but then I didnt really get round to trying to OC it either :(

other thing to try is to short the pins but keep a screwdriver resting on the contacts for 4 hours as it can take up2 4 hours to clear cmos in some cases

Figured I'd try this! Took out the CPU and memory. Tried to boot it. It didnt. Reset CMOS by shorting jumper. Put CPU and memory back in. Now the system will try to start, PHASE lights blink once then it turns off. No beeps from speaker. So now I dont know if its the board, PSU or CPU. Will try another PSU but I suspect the PSU is OK. Fun Fun Fun.

First , you will get much much better support on this forum than the gigabyte website. If you cannot even get into the BIOS, i would straight up exchange the board. It was working fine before for a few months and it crapped out on you. I really hate to tell u that, i could be way off and way wrong . We really need some more suggestions in here.

If you bought it locally, swap it out. If you bought it online, i would buy a board from Microcenter if you have one near you , and use that to see if the Mobo is the problem. Or even if you know a friend on EX58 , try there board. I never had to RMA thank God but i would expect that would leave u without your machine for some time.

You get a message saying scanning hard drive for BIOS image, u think maybe somehow your mobo lost the bios?

did u short it for 4hours tho? as it can take along time to clear sometimes...it could be psu ive known other users have trouble with psu's best if you could borrow one or swap one over from a working computer....and it will run with just a four pin cpu power socked it plugs in the top four sockets leaving four empty ones below,its worth a try to eliminate the psu i ran mine with a 300w four pin and 24 pin psu till i waited for my 1050w to arrive so i know it works

Yeah its looking more like the MOBO is dead. I tried a different PSU, same thing, the PHASE LEDs flash, CPU fans kick, then nothing. I cant confirm the CPU isnt fried, but since its been running at stock for a while I cant see that its the CPU. Looks like I'll be sending the board back. I've always used ASUS in the past...should have this time too!

If any one has suggestions, please post, might help others in same situation.

what reading are you getting on the motherboard digi readout? ff? or c1e?? or another code
