• EX58 & Corsair Dominator XMP Setting

Hi,

So I've got my new rig installed and up and running both on Windows XP and Windows 7 RC. Both are on clean installs on two SATA hard drives that I have had from my previous build and both are clean installs.

I seem to have constant issues with setting the memory using the XMP Profile1 setting where the speed gets bumped to 1600MHz and voltage to 1.65v. However in Windows, either XP or RC7, the system constantly hangs.

I basically get the screen to freeze with no mouse movement after a while. I checked the event settings and nothing is showing. I am not sure if it if the memory alone since I've tested it with the Windows memory diagnostics in both normal and XMP profile and have also run Prime95 for a few hours under both settings without a problem. However the only time it seems to hang is when it gets bumped to the XMP profiles. Any ideas? Could it be the MB? Maybe the HD's are failing?

My setup:
Gigabyte EX58-UD5 w/ 9
Intel i7 920 (no overclocking)
Sapphire Radeon 5870 (Radeon_HD5800_8.66RC6 Drivers)
3 x 2GB Corsair Dominator TR3X6G1600C8D
Corsair HX-850 PSU
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s

its most likely your ram timings thats causing it,also what bios are you using? read on how to flash to latest bios using q-flash as the latest bios has memory compatability fixes,try setting your ram multi/voltage and timings manually as auto will more than likely cause you issues

Re: EX58 & Corsair Dominator XMP Setting

Hi thanks for the response...

I've installed the latest BIOS using Q-Flash, as this same situation was cropping up under F7. So I have the F9E beta bios installed right now.

I tried setting it to Profile1 and then upping the voltages a bit, 1.7 for memory and 1.35 for the CPU, but still a no go. You think I should relax the timings a bit? I'm a bit peeved because these RAM sticks were supposedly rated at 1600MHz at 8-8-8-24. And XMP was supposed to make pushing this stuff easier right!?!!? LOL...

Anyway, I can repeat the errors by opening up Chrome and watching a HD video and then turning on the performance monitor from Windows. The system instantly reboots itself without warning. The error I get right before the reboot is "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."
Source is Kernal-Power
Event ID 41

Everything works fine when I turn XMP off and set everything back to stock. Only thing I change in the BIOS is the XMP setting to Profile1.

all xmp is is a preloaded setting profile for your ram dont over volt cpu or ram volts tho only go as high as 1.66 in bios for ram and cpu can be left on auto or normal for stock speed,you can try 8-8-8-26 or 8-8-8-28 for ram timings and i wouldnt use xmp if i were you...i dont have xmp with my ram,itll probably be corrected in future bios so you will be able to use xmp but not just yet,also you can set timings manually as rated 8-8-8-24 and turn xmp off does it crash if you do that??

Re: EX58 & Corsair Dominator XMP Setting

Hi,

Yeah I dialed in all those settings manually. Everything else I left as stock. I tried 26 and 28 timings and they still crash...

I dialed the multiplier down to 10 instead of 12 which nets me a 1333MHz memory...Seems stable...I can't get to 1600MHz...I'm thinking of RMA'ing this set and getting another brand if I can't get it stable...

Wuddya think? Anything else I can try?

People mistrust of XMP is amazing.
XMP does it's job right, QPI or what ever is the equivalent of MCH is probably need tweaking.

you can try 9-9-9-24 timings @1600mhz as more mhz is better then looser timings and qpi shouldnt need messing with at stock cpu speed

Yup...Same thing unfortunately...Loosened the timings and I still can only get it stable at 1333MHz...

At 1600MHz it sets it to:

Memory Multiplier = 12x
DDR Voltage = 1.65V
CPU VCore = 1.28V
QPI = 1.35V
CAS = 8
tRCD = 8
tRP = 8
tRAS = 24
Command Rate = 2

Just found this thread searching for info on the same problem with the Corsair Dominator TR3X6G1600C8D. There is a lot of us currently with this instability issue at 1600Mhz on the Dominators. Thought I would post up some links so we can all stay connected to try and resolve our problems.

x58 3xSLI, RAM Timings, Voltages

EVGA X58 3X SLI and TR3X6G1600C8D

I've been gauging my instability with SuperPI, it seems to crash almost instantaneously if there is a problem. Where Prime95 might take a good 10-12hrs to crash if the settings are decent. But at 1600Mhz I am currently lost on how to set these timings right. 1333Mhz seems to work flawlessly, but no 1600Mhz. I have ran Memtest for 10hrs - 15 passes and no errors on these.

Re: EX58 & Corsair Dominator XMP Setting

I've been bumping around QPI voltages to see what different results I
can get in SuperPI. I have also tried at different DIMM voltages. DIMM
1.7v and QPI 1.4v have shown to be the best settings so far for me.
Hopefully that is not overkill. I have read so many different opinions
I dont even know what is fact or fiction anymore. These RAM have
completed 20 passes in LinX (on XMP Profile 1), ran Prime95 for
8-12hrs (depending on settings), and have cleared a 15 pass in
Memtest86+. But if you run SuperPI or HyperPI the machine either
freezes or instant restarts. This instability also shows it's face
while playing video games. I am running Memtest86+ again today for a
full twenty or more passes.

Manual Settings:

so I deviated to other paths of testing. I will post them up though
once I collect enough tests from them (unless this data is useless
*shrug*).

I am currently playing in the 1333Mhz range with no immediate visible
problems; they run perfectly fine at 1333Mhz. Still no 1600Mhz
stability :(

On my EVGA board it is QPI VLL VCore and there is a CPU VTT Voltage. I have tried increasing the CPU VCore to 1.3v instead of auto (1.28v) but that does not seem to help much either.

*UPDATE*

Posted this up on the Corsair Forum. I have XMP enabled to be cooperative with the Corsair tech, RAM GUY.

I have all three of my RAM in with XMP Profile 1 enabled and DIMM set to 1.65v (all other BIOS options are set to default). They are currently at 12 passes and no errors (going to let them go to 20 passes). Is this sufficient to rule out memory errors or do I still need to test them individually?

From what I read some voltages are very dandgerous for the Core i7 and will kill the CPU if not withing hours than within weeks, vDIMM is among them, you realy should reconsider any values above 1.65v.
