  • noob needs help clocking GA-EP45-UD3R with q8400

    Hi,

Total noob here. Just bought "Titan Thor OC" Intel Core 2 Quad Core Q8400 2.66GHz @ 3.20GHz DDR2 System= and I dont think they clocked it for me as the advert suggests. How do I find out if it is clocked and if it is isn't how do I go about clocking it?

I have read a few other similar threads but I don't really understand them.

    Many thanks in advance Copey.

CPU-Z can tell you bus cpu and memory clock speeds, you can find it in the programs sticky at the top of the forum.
You may use benchmarking tools to compare performance.

I've downloaded it and run it. Think its saying 2.6ghz. I've downloaded a .cvf file from it to my desktop. Now what? lol
Sorry for being so rubbish and thanks for the reply

      Edit

      Core speed = 2666.3mhz
      bus speed = 333.3mhz
      rated fsb = 1333.2mhz

Hmmm that does not look overclocked.
No instruction came with it as for loading a BIOS profile or anything?

No mate nothing came with it. They built it but I told them I would install the OS myself as I wanted to partition the HDD. So I think they just didnt bother clocking it for me and now they never answer the phone.

you need to post your ram specs and current cpu voltage all in cpu-z,if you want to overclcok you have to raise the fsb but you need to post all your specs ie ram,and voltages from the bios

just type what it tells you in cpu-z ,core voltage, fsb, multiplier, then on cpu-z click memory and tell me the timings also what speed ram do u have??? sorry im not familiar with this board or cpu but you should be able to get an easy 3.2ghz

                    dram frequency = 533.2mhz
                    fsb:dram = 5:8
                    4 gig ddr2 dual symmetric

core voltage of cpu = 1.072v
                    bus speed = 333.3mhz
                    rated fsb = 1333.2mhz

the multiplier keeps fluctuating between 6 and 8. is this normal?

sorry i dont know how to post anything from the bios without writing it all down on paper. i hope the above is what you were asking for.

in the bios screen at start up set fsb so it gives you 3.2 ghz, then youll need to lower your ram multi so it matches 1066mhz or lower, you may need to alter core voltage but dont change it yet

did you save it after you changed it?? did you check in cpu-z to see if it had changed to 3.2ghz? you need to read some overclocking guides to get the general feel of what to do and talk to someone with the same board as i dont have much idea with older chips, you dont want to mess with any voltages without good advice as it can damage componants but changing fsb and ram multiplier wont hurt anything

you sir may well be a genious! i lowered the ram multi to below 1066 and it seems to have worked. when i double click on computer on the desk topit still says 2.66 in the bottom right corner. cpu-z however says core speed =2412.2mhz with multiplier of 6.
every so often the multiplier changes to 8 and the core speed goes up to 2.6mhz. is this normal??

yes your board or chip might have power saving enabled so it will drop when idle to save power you can disable it in bios,it wont tell you in windows if your chips overclocked itll just tell u the 2.66 cpu-z should tell you if its at 3.2,raise the fsb and use the highest fsb multi you can, then set your ram as close to 1066 or under 1066 then save it and reboot
