I'm trying to use the turbo mode to oc this new 920 D0, but the multi keeps dropping to 20. I've disabled EIST and the other energy saving options in bios. and I went into the power management options of windows 7 and set it to high with min cpu set to 100%. As soon as I put any kind of load on the CPU the multi drops to 20. I've tried multiple bios and still no luck. I open turbo I7 and the Eist box is checked even though I disabled it in bios. Could this be a bad processor?

Re: I can't disable EIST
How are your temps and cooling?
Dynamic frequency scaling (also known as CPU throttling) is a technique in computer architecture where a processor is run at a less-than-maximum frequency in order to conserve power. Dynamic frequency scaling is commonly used in laptops and other mobile devices, where energy comes from a battery and thus is limited. It is also used in quiet computing settings and to decrease energy and cooling costs for lightly loaded machines. Less heat output, in turn, allows the system cooling fans to be throttled down or turned off, further decreasing power consumption. It is also used for reducing heat in badly cooled systems when the temperature reaches a certain threshold. Most systems affected by this are inadequately cooled overclocked systems.

Re: I can't disable EIST
Excuse my ignorance javanese but what is the file in the link you provided and how do I use it? My max core temp is 72 under load. I ended up exchanging the CPU at Microcenter and the new one does the same thing. The good thing about the new CPU is it seems to like the 20 multiplier alot more than the previous chip even though it's from the same batch.
The strang thing about this chip compared to every other 920 i've seen is that in bios the qpi/vtt voltage options go 1.280,1.30,1.320 ect. Every other 920 i've seen the qpi/vtt voltage options go 1.275,1.295,1.315,ect.. I don't know if this is normal or if my mobo is acting up. I don't know if I should reinstall w7 or not either.920 D0, 4.3Ghz, 1.312v (24/7 OC)

Re: I can't disable EIST
the utility in the link is i7 Turbo. Just lets you watch the multis ...
It might be the same one you call turbo i7 ... :/
Give us a full template of your overclocking bios settings.
Edit: And btw my qpi/vtt voltage has the same numerical progress as your new one. (1.28 - 1.30 - 1.32)Last edited by javaneze; 09-21-2009, 09:08 AM.+ Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 F9e bios| i7 920 D0 on Xigmatek Thor's Hammer + 2xSilenX 120"| Corsair Dominator 3x2Gb 1600MHz

Re: I can't disable EIST
A few things I have to ask, are you using an ES CPU?
Are you using the latest easytune?
Are you changing any CPU/Memory settings in windows, if so with what program?
With C1E and EIST Disabled the Turbo 21 multi should not drop, unless you are using a ES CPU, or you are using an older Easytune, that is why I asked those things.
What BIOS are you using?

Re: I can't disable EIST
I'm overclocking through the bios, I'm currently using firmware Fd4, I've also tried FA,FB and FC5. I'm pretty sure it's not an ES because I bought it at Microcenter. Would CPU-z identify it if it was? These are my BIOS settings.
CPU Clock ratio.......................... 20
CPU frequency........................... 3.60 (180x20)
BCLK frequency.......................... 180
performance enhance.................. standard
system memmory multiplier........... 6.0
Dram timing selectable................. auto
load line calibration..................... disabled
CPU Vcore................................ 1.28581v
QPI/VTT................................... 1.280v
IOH core................................... auto
dram voltage.............................. 1.500v (all other voltages auto)
Advanced CPU Features
CPU Clock Ratio ......................... 20
Intel Turbo Boost Tech................ enabled
CPU cores enabled...................... all
CPU multi threading..................... enabled
CPU enhanced halt...................... disabled
C3/C6/C7 state support............... disabled
CPU thermal monitor.................... enabled
CPU EIST function....................... disabled
Bi directional prochot................... enabled

Uncore and QPI Features
QPI link speed............................ 6.48
QPI clock ratio........................... x36

As you can see here the EIST box in Turbo i7 is checked even though EIST is disabled in BIOS

Re: I can't disable EIST
I think 1.28581v is too much for a D0's vcore mate on a 180bclk.
Try using the "normal" option or start testing from a lower vcore, lets say 1.16v and above.
Put 1.65v on the rams also. They might be underclocked but they are running on a 180bclk.
Try disabling the "CPU thermal monitor" and the "Bi directional prochot".
You could also try leaving both QPI link speed and uncore clock ratio on "auto".
I m not familiar with the "ES CPUs" Lsd mentioned so no remarks on that.
Hope any of this helps.+ Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 F9e bios| i7 920 D0 on Xigmatek Thor's Hammer + 2xSilenX 120"| Corsair Dominator 3x2Gb 1600MHz
