How do I configure Kingston HyperX 1600 with Gigabyte EX58-UD4P

  • How do I configure Kingston HyperX 1600 with Gigabyte EX58-UD4P

    Hey guys,

    I decided to post to this forum because I noticed that there was a forum dedicated to Kingston HyperX and one dedicated to Gigabyte.

    I have just purchased and installed the Gigabyte EX58-UD4P motherboard with 12GBs (6x 2GB) of Kingston HyperX KHX12800D3LLK3/6GX. CPU is Intel i7 920.

    Machine works perfectly fine, except the ram is running at 1066.

    How do I configure my motherboard to recognize the RAM speed? I found that the motherboard sees "Profile1" and when I set it, it sees 1600. But, when you save and exit the bios, she won't boot. I have to reset the CMOS from the external motherboard button, on back panel, it boots a couple of times and wants to load the last good boot setting.

    I'm a total noob at overclocking... so be gentle.

    Manually set your RAM timings, memory multiplier, and uncore frequency (double your memory multiplier).

      How? I can see the settings in the bios, but I don't know what any of them mean. It's all greek to me.

      So let's start with what I know... I know it's 1600 and it's 1.65V. That's it.

        Under the MB Intelligent Tweaker:

        • Set QPI Link Speed to the lowest multiplier.
        • Go to Uncore & QPI Features and set Uncore Frequency to twice your memory multiplier (if you don't know you can use this guide or by guess and check).
        • Set your System Memory Multiplier to the desired frequency.
        • Under the DRAM Timing Selectable, manually set your timings for each channel (A, B, C).

          Let us know if you need further help, I can help for sure with settings!

          For 12GB you likely need 1.2-1.3 IOH Core voltage, more than 1.35 QPI/Vtt (likely 1.35-1.45+), and you may need more than 1.66V Dram voltage as well.

            Yeah neither one of those posts is helping me... Not sure if it's because I'm stupid or you guys are assuming I know what you're talking about.

            Set QPI Link Speed to the lowest multiplier (first of all - what are we multiplying?): The EX58-UD4P shows x36, x44, x48 and "Slow Mode". x36= 4.8Ghz, x44= 5.86Ghz, and x48= 6.4Ghz while "Slow Mode" = 67mhz. By lowest do you mean 67mhz or x36?

            Uncore - what is that? Set Uncore Frequency to twice your memory multiplier? How do I know what my memory multiplier is? You're going to say, "Go to the guide." I went there... More questions:

            Core Clock: Is that 2660? Mine says 20x and 133 at 2.66ghz because it's an i7 920. It's the only thing I actually know.

            Uncore Clock: I don't even know what an uncore clock is. Is that like an unbirthday?

            Memory Clock: I assume it's 1600 because that's my ram?

            QPI Clock: I don't know what this is or where to find it.

            Base Clock: No idea where to find this either

            Core i7 Model: Yay! I know that! It's an i7 920

            Turbo Mode: Yes? And there's a check box for multiplier to be on auto... which begs the question all together.

            Assuming I get this far with all the right answers, I click "suggest" which doesn't arouse much confidence, and I get 75 values that I don't know what to do with.

            I can't believe they make a motherboard for 1600 ram, and they make 1600 ram, but in the year 2009 trying to make them work is a little like trying to make a Hayes modem work for the first time in 1989.

            So, maybe I should just call Gigabyte tech support... I dunno.

              QPI slowest mode suggested would have meant x36 (QPI Freq is x36 for example x Bclk)

              Uncore is labeled as such in your BIOS, and uncore is x blck as well. For example if you use x8 Memory Multiplier (SPD) then your Uncore Freq multi should be set to x16 or above.

              Your ram will not be 1600Mhz until you set it to be so

              Sorry for all your confusion, X58 is a bit to learn I know.

              If you want please give me your settings you are using in full and I will advise full settings back to you that should get you going.
