  • How to change pata Hard drive to SATA Hd on gigabyte mobo

I want to upgrade to a SATA hard drive on my pc. Currently I have two pata hd s one is 80gb and the other is 189gb.
80gb is the master hd. Now I want to upgrade to a single SATA HD (probably 500+gb) How Do I do this? what are the steps? (A link to a step by step process would be welcome) Also what software or tools do I need to move my old files to the new SATA HD. Also can I keep one of the pata HD installed with a SATA? Thanks in advance

    my system:
    mobo gigabyte EP43-DS3L
    pentium E5200 2.50 ghz oc to 3.3ghz
    2GB ram
    Nvidia 9600Gt card

Re: How to change pata Hard drive to SATA Hd on gigabyte mobo

    From your mobo user's manual:

    Storage Interface
    􀂊 South Bridge:
    - 6 x SATA 3Gb/s connectors supporting up to 6 SATA 3Gb/s devices
    - Support for SATA RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5 and RAID 10 (Only for GA-EP43-DS3LR)

    􀂊 JMicron 368 chip:
    - 1 x IDE connector supporting ATA-133/100/66/33 and up to 2 IDE devices

    􀂊 iTE IT8718 chip:
    - 1 x floppy disk drive connector supporting up to 1 floppy disk drive

You can mix PATA and SATA drives on your system.

You can often download free disk cloning software from the hard drive manufacturer's website, where they should have instructions or a FAQ that detail the procedures. This software usually only works if you have one of their drives installed in your system.

I've had mixed results when downloading other freeware cloning software and this software is often painfully slow.

My Western Digital (WDC) "Black" 640GB hard drive is excellent; reasonably quiet, 50% better throughput than my 1 or 2 year old WD drives, and the Black versions come with a standard 5 year warranty. Available models start at 500GB and up to 1TB or more.
Check out Newegg (WD drives) and other web based retailers for the best prices.
Most of these drives will be O.E.M. models which means that you will have to purchase a SATA cable and manually download any hard drive software or manuals from the web.

Let us know how you make out.

If it is not the very latest Ghost then it may not work, keep that in mind

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've seen several references where they recommend the Ghost 2003 version over all the more recent versions.

Re: How to change pata Hard drive to SATA Hd on gigabyte mobo

Yes, Ghost 2003 ROCKS!! But sadly it does not work on SATA Devices very well, especially new ones. I use Ghost 2003 on a 1.44MB disk at least 2-3 times a week on client computers, works Perfect for IDE just not SATA

You have to use the very latest to Ghost SATA Drives or RAID Arrays. I hate norton except for Ghost 2003, if I had to suggest a backup program to someone from norton it would be Save and Restore 2.0 not Ghost

My real suggestion is Acronis True Image though for anyone else who also hats norton and finds Ghost 2003 to not work for them

Norton Ghost version 14.0 is current.
Acronis True Image can probably downloaded as trial-ware for a limited time and might have limited functionality.
Acronis True Image WD Edition is free, but will probably only work if at least one of your hard drives is a Western Digital HDD.

Drive Snap Shot trial would also work >>
Drive Snapshot - Disk Image Backup for Windows NT/2000/XP/2003/X64

But I do suggest an acronis trial if you cannot get the full program

I really hate norton products, I mean really, but yes, ghost '03 was good.
Dabbled with Acronis True Image, and it was good. Would recommend it fo sho.
I have since found something I like much better, and found I cannot live without it. Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2009
                              Paragon Hard Disk Manager
TBH, it is worth every dime; Whether you just go with the suite, or the professional version (which is what I use). Very powerful software, and the linux recovery disc you can make with it is like a godsend, making just about every function of the software available to you in the boot environment (you can also make the recovery disc in WinPE if desired, but i recommend the linux one, as it is much more versatile/powerful if you're an advanced user).
