  • Incorrect Timings-Crucial Ballistix+EP45-UD3R

Hey Guys, I'm having a little bit of a dilemma regarding my ram timings.

    I am currently using this ram BL2KIT25664AR80A - 4GB kit (2GBx2), Ballistix Tracer 240-pin DIMM (with LEDs) , DDR2 PC2-6400 from Crucial.com

My problem lies within the RAM timings and voltage that the mobo is "auto setting"

As you see from the link, this ram is supposed to run at 4-4-4-12 with 2v. As of right now my BIOS will not set it to these but to 5-5-5-18 with 1.8v (at 480Mhz as the clock as seen in Memtest). In the MIT settings in the BIOS I set my RAM to "Turbo", because the "Standard" option makes the timings even worse.

So here is my problem- I manually set the timings and voltage to 4-4-4-12 2v with the MIT set to "standard" and I don't post- just cycle on, off. Only a CMOS reset fixes it of course.

I apologize as I am a noob to BIOS settings and whatnot-it's not vital that I get this ram to the correct timings but I'm just wondering as to why it is doing this.

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: Incorrect Timings-Crucial Ballistix+EP45-UD3R

Please see the link in my signature for review on Ballistix, not the DDR3 one of course.

Those settings should work fine for you, your issue lies in the fact that you are not setting your ram multiplier yourself, so you are getting 960Mhz instead of 800

MCH Core voltage, Ram voltage, and likely Vtt will have to be set all manually. I posted settings for 400 FSB With this ram in my review. That should help you right along, if you still get stuck let me know and I can post you some settings but they will be the same as I list in the review though as they are stable and proper for 400 FSB.

You are just leaving to many things to auto, and not setting other things you need to per your ram

Standard Performance Enhance is suggested until you get stable, it Will work just fine once you set everything

This is interesting, bus frequency is set to 400 but with multiplier on auto memory is set to DDR-960?
Could you post a screen capture of MemSet main and spd(click spd) windows?
MemSet can be found in the programs sticky at the top of the forum.

It's just because auto Memory multi is choosing 2.40B, not sure why though? But looks to me as that is what it going on

Oh right, BIOS always set multiplier for memory spec at default CPU bus frequency.

              Re: Incorrect Timings-Crucial Ballistix+EP45-UD3R

This a bit confusing, because in the template everything is set on auto but the values in MemSet seem to match the SPD profile for DDR-800(400MHz)
You can see you have 2 EPP profiles, one for DDR-800 and the other for DDR-1000.
The 4-4-4-12 timings are only guaranteed for DDR-800 by the manufacturer not just any frequency. The BIOS attempts do adjust them to the actual selected frequency, turbo also may alter them so there no way to tell what exactly is going on unless Performance Enhance is set to standard.
For your current FSB I'd recommend selecting XMP profile2 and Performance Enhance standard.
If you choose to use 2.00D multiplier select XMP profile1, and for 2.066D profile2 (slight overclock, auto timings will be adjusted up 5-6-6-16)

If you are settle on the FSB you can alter tham manually, starting with the values from one of the EPP profile that match your chosen ram rate and tweak them if you are into that kind of thing.

                Re: Incorrect Timings-Crucial Ballistix+EP45-UD3R

Ok I got it working at the 444-12 2v with 400mhz. I have not set any other timings yet though from your review LSD.

So what is better- the mobo default settings with the slower timings but higher clock but lower volts?

Or the specs- lower clocks but better timings but higher volts?

Some of my gaming seems to be a little, little bit jittery now with the 444-12 2v 400mhz settings.

Please post your current settings (don't leave empty entries, MCH for example is crutial for stability) and replace the comments with actual settings.
The jitter may suggest instability and that some tweaking is needed.

This realy up to you, better timings give better performance though not always noticeable. You didn't pay the extra to run at speed/timings you could get for half price did you?

I myself fine with XMP profile and auto settings. The only memory related settings I set manually is tRD (Static tRead Value) which BIOS guess is far from the optimal and have rather major effect on performance.
                  Other have other oppinions.

                        Re: Incorrect Timings-Crucial Ballistix+EP45-UD3R

So I Have followed your guide LSD and I have a few questions-

There are 2 things I cannot match you on on memset-
                        tREF & Performance level

Peformance level is a 6 for you but 15 for me
tREF is 3117 for you but is 3120T for me

Also, I'm confused on the FSB setting- you either have 399 or 401, I'm currently set at 400.

The driving strength- why is it at 1066 instead of auto?

Last note- I cannot tell a difference between the two (default BIOS settings for the ram and the Specification settings) So which do you recommend? The 444-12 2v 400mhz or the 555-18 1.8v 480mhz? Which is better for the life of the ram etc.?

Sorry I'm a complete noob to RAM settings-last questions I promise.

I just got back from my BIOS. I set both channels to 8, so now it is showing up as 8 in memset

Also I set my voltage to my Vcore to 1.2, but before with the auto setting it was showing 1.3. Is this ok? I guess since its running now...

You must realise that timings are not fixed values they must be addjusted for different memory speeds, 5-5-5-18 @ 480MHz are the same as 4-4-4-12 @ 400 MHz (not exactly but BIOS rounds them up).
With the XMP profile and DRA< Voltage you had set to auto I doubt DRAM Voltage was set to 1.8v, it was probably set to 2.0v. What you see in BIOS as default is not always the value aoolied, check BIOS HW Monitor or EasyTune monitor tab.
