  • New memory fails memtest on X58-UD4P

    Hi all
had some new mem delivered OCZ 3G1333LV6GK
installed it at auto settings in bios and booted memtest86 3.5
got 4% into test #0 and locked up ... back into bios and gave it more volts 1.64v ... ran memtest again and crashed at 7% this time causing a reboot.
    my old g.skill mem 3x1gb runs memtest86 3.5 fine .

My question is could there be a problem with OCZ and memtest86 3.5 ? ie if it runs through 2.11 version is the memory ok , as i dont want to go through the hassle of rma if its ok

Try it through Memtest86+ 2.11 under test #7 and if it fails that you might want to increase your QPI/VTT voltage a little bit and/or run your memory at 1.66V (though that shouldn't be necessary for your particular memory).

I'll download mem 2.11 and give it a try ... i did have QPI/VTT set at 1.200 might it need to be higher ? .. is this the one that needs to stay within 0.5v of Dramm volts?

        Yes.

        And try 1.22V or 1.24V.

Re: New memory fails memtest on X58-UD4P

well it passes memtest86 ver 2.11 on test #7 .. had volts at 1.22 on QPI/VTT and Dramm at 1.62 . back into bios and set volts to auto on both , ran memtest again passed ok .. rebooted into memtest86 ver 3.5 ..Crashed 3 sec after start.

Now i dont know what to think .... the g.skill can pass both these versions but the OCZ only pass the 2.11 ver ....... think i should RMA it ?

Is it possible to test with single sticks? This way you can find if there's just a faulty stick which will indicate the need for RMA.

Tested a stick at a time all passed ok .. with all 3 in it fails , i have a feeling its a bios setting issue . The G-skill i have been using is 3x1gb so dosn't stress it as much i guess .

mabey my board just dosnt get on with this memory.

Started at optimized defaults . left at 20 multi , only wanted to start clocking the i7 to see its limits for stable , so set QPI link at x36 , Uncore at 2x mem freq , mem multi at x8 , all else was at auto except Vcore at 1.250v then started to up the BCLK ... started at 160 not much really to start i thought.

Hit F10 and save/exit ...no post , mb is lit up all fans spinning , but nothing, tried power of at psu and holding power on button in for 30 sec ..but didnt work ,had to reset cmos to get back in to bios.

When setting your memory multiplier, make sure that your Uncore Frequency multiplier is twice (2x) or (2x + 1) your memory multiplier.

                        Example:

                        Uncore Frequency - 16x (or 17x)
System Memory Multiplier (SPD) - 8x

Memtest 3.x has caused problems with many different motherboards.
Memtest86+ is the version that is recommended.
