  • AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black + GA-MA78GMS2H ?

(I searched first and saw the 550 thread, but I think this is more about the mobo's constraints than the CPU. Sorry if I've posted incorrectly. Mr. Mod, kindly move this if so.)

    Compatibility?
    1. Would these work together?
    2. If so, would the Phenom be unlockable to x4?

    RAM = 8GB G.Skill DDR2-1000
    GA-MA78GMS2H ver 1.1 (f10)
    AMD Phenom 11 x2 550 Black Edition~ HDZ550WFGIBOX

If I do this, it is to replace my Athlon 64 x2 5600+. It would be especially nice if this mobo would allow the 550 to be used as x4.

    Thanks.

Core Unlocking would be all up to the CPU, I see that CPU is supported though by this board from BIOS F8 onwards >>

Very long times (4 minutes to 20)? Sorry, what do you mean by that?

Why are you worried about RMA, is your board EOL or are they telling you they don't have any?

Sorry as you know I am clueless about AMD for the most part. How old is your current CPU, I mean when was that model released? Ya, maybe a new CPU could help if your current one is very old but it may also have no effect.

What is the issue anyway, sorry I help so many users I am always lost :)

I know that the motherboard GA-MA78GM-S2H rev.1.1 will indeed support the AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black + with F8 Bios.
          2. If so, would the Phenom be unlockable to x4?
You need a Motherboard with the ACC feature on the Southbridge Chipset which as of now their are only 2 different ones. (AMD SB710 & AMD SB750)
The south bridge on the board in question (GA-MA78GM-S2H rev.1.1) has a AMD SB700. It does not offer ACC which is what you would need to unlock the locked cores.
Also on the AMD Phenom II x2 550 has to be from certain batches. The second or middle line has the info you seek,
If you google (0922apmw) you will see which batches will fail and which batches will succeed I hope this helps. http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=227004

            Re: AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black + GA-MA78GMS2H ?

@Artdrivers, that is a beautifully-done chart showing the results, isn't it? Wow! Thanks for the URL.

Well, the Phenom appears to be an expensive dark horse. It would be superb IF it did the job for me.

I think there is a good chance that it would. However, people have questioned most of my $100-range components:
            PSU
            mobo
            RAM
            CPU
            beep sounds; not distorted.

They did distort again (p-beep or bp-d-Beep) as soon as I inserted any one drive. It seemed to make no difference which drive it was. With any cable connected to the modular PSU, I'd hear a distorted d-beep on POST.

I loaded my entire system back on. This morning I was not surprised when it took 23 minutes and 20 seconds to go from Power On to POST beep. (And the beep was distorted, of course.) Windows itself was running in exactly 27:00 minutes

              Re: AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black + GA-MA78GMS2H ?

Yes I agree you have quality name brands in your build. Their still is always a possibility of a bad apple somewhere. The only true course of action is to test each of them. The diagnostic nightmare. If you had some replacement parts at your disposal you could run tests eliminate possibilities. I have 3 computers at my disposal so if I need to test I can. I thought of something I "red" a while back. Have you tried running your internal fans without your board? Just connect them directly into a four pin molex adapter? Well with a jumper. Also have you researched the P.O.S.T. beep codes as in p-beep meaning 1 short and 1 long or the other way around 1 long and 1 short or 2 short beeps?

              AWARD BIOS Beep Sound Message
1 short (Beep) System booting is normally.
2 short (Beep) CMOS setting error
1 long - 1 short (Beep) DRAM ERROR
1 long - 2 short (Beep) Display card or monitor connected error
1 long - 3 short (Beep) Keyboard Error
1 long - 9 short (Beep) ROM Error
Long (Beep) continuous DRAM hasn't inset correctly.
Short (Beep) continuous POWER supply has problem
