  • GA-M78SM-S2H -- Locks up a core with USB2.0 turned on

    Weirdest damn thing.
With USB 2.0+1.1 enabled in bios the system process goes ballistic and uses 50% of my dual core (IE one thread is locked).

If i disable USB entirely or drop to 1.1 the problem goes away.

I tried unplugging all USB from the header and the backplane, no luck. Even with everything unplugged it still has the issue.

This was happening on my win7 32bit RTM install, I think it was happening since I installed RTM. So I formated and went to 64bit, and on the very first boot I was still having this issue.

    Any ideas?

Test power supply first. Check your back plate.
You could be getting a short from the case. We recommend you remove that motherboard from the case/chassis and test the board for POST. Please follow the following simple steps.
    1. Place the motherboard on top of the cardboard box (you can use the motherboard box)
    2. Install the CPU, CPU fan, Memory, Power supply plugs (plug the 1 X 20 pin and 1 X 4 or 2 X 8 pin from the power supply unit) and a video card.
    3. Hook the monitor to the video card and be sure the monitor is switched on.
    4. Turn on the system board by using the case "Power on" switch.
If the system fails to POST, check the components' insertion again to ensure they are all connected properly.

We are way beyond posting here.

This is in the OS, look at task manager and one of the two cores is pegged for CPU usage.

Also like I said I had removed all headers and usb devices frmo the back plane, so nothing was plugged into USB, but if it's set to 2.0 some thread goes ballastic and has a thread that goes to 100% cpu usage (with dual cores task manager shows 50%).

Hmm, very odd. I would start with uninstalling all USB Items in the device manager then let windows reinstall them and the drivers. If no luck there, I would reinstall the latest Chipset drivers and see if that helps any >>

Does this also occur in safe mode, and with or without your Virus program enabled?

Can you post a taskmanager image so we can see what is being loaded so high?

What BIOS are you using? Does this occur with all BIOS's?

I can try removing the USB items and letting windows regrab drivers. All the devices are using windows drivers (keyboard/mouse, MCE IR reciever, cardreader).

Since the m78SM is an geforce8200 board, I'm not sure those intel drivers will do me anygood.

The problem was occouring in a previous installation of windows, and then was still happening on the very first boot into a clean install. I haven't tried safe mode.

Task manager shows 1 CPU pegged, and the name of the process is "system" and of course "system idle" uses the other 50% percent.

Sorry if you saw my mention of Intel drivers, I did edit that before I left this page. I just meant your chipset drivers linked on the page we both linked above

Does this occur with your card reader disconnected? Just wondered if maybe that is it?

It was still happening with all internal and external usb devices removed

The drivers I loaded were 15.37 nforce drivers directly from nvidia.

Can you slide the motherboard forward toward the front of the case? You may be getting a short from the backplate itself. Just a thought the back plate has little prongs on them that sometimes can get caught up into a usb port. I'm not saying this is your issue or problem. You may want to check it though.
