Thats pretty much up to you, I would advise you have a spec list in your sig and complete a template with what you have tried so far.

Personally (Slightly biased maybe) but I wouldn't say that was a worthwhile upgrade, unless it's free of course.

Several forum members have e8400 overclocks around 4.20GHz with air cooling and running their systems 24/7 stable. Somewhat higher speeds are possible, but at the expense of higher temperatures and voltages.
I'd rather upgrade to a Q9550 and run it around 4.0GHz, even though the E8600 will o/c higher.
You should be able to easily see what the E8600 will do by searching with:

Ya I would just keep the 8400 myself, and save your $$ on a upgrade towards X58 or P55 if you are looking for something better.
Most all 8400 will do 4Ghz or better, 8600 may do slightly better under extreme temps but not much to gain over 8400 under normal cooling really.Comment
