        Re: x58 ud5 overclocking advice?

You should have no trouble OC'ing to and well past 3.6GHz.

I achieved that and it was very very stable (cpu at 1.3vtt) and im running slower ram then you (which should make it more difficult for me to achieve), so you should be at stock running your uncore at 3.2ghz neway (if yours are non xmp modules).

What you do, is first setup everthing to run at proper stock rates, and set all your voltages (apart from the few you have to set) to Normal.
No more auto setting, its not good when OC'ing.

You should lock your pci-e bus to 100mhz.

Once its all setup right, its just a matter of adjusting your bclk to around 160-166 and lowering your multiplier by a few values (to keep the ram at 1600) then all you do is testing at different cpu voltages to find the absolute lowest you can get it stable at that speed at.

At least this is what I did when i oc'd my 920 on my ud5. others may have better advice, but I say make sure your setup is all manually configurated at stock speeds, test and once its definitly stable, save the profile and then its just a matter of adjusting several things.

First, thank you for the reply. I am very new to overclocking so i might need alot of help. What do you mean when you say "you should be at stock running your uncore at 3.2ghz neway (if yours are non xmp modules)." My cpu stock is 2.66 i think.
          Thanks for your patients

            Re: x58 ud5 overclocking advice?

            Hey

What he means is that if your memory is rated at 1600 MHz you should run this by changing the BCLk to 160 and then the memory multiplier to 10x - which will give you your rated speed of 1600 Mhz. Just remember to change the Uncore to twice + 1 the 1600 Mhz RAM speed - next on the list above 3200.

But are you running everything on default settings at the moment? Then we need to change timings on your RAM before we change Bclk.

Please tell me if you changed anything and if so what was it in BIOS?

            Poul

Yes everything is default in terms of the cpu and ram. Please explain "change the Uncore to twice + 1 the 1600 Mhz RAM speed " Sorry I am new to overclocking. Thanks again for the reply guys

                  Re: x58 ud5 overclocking advice?

If you never overclocked a PC in your life - I strongly advice you to do a lot of reading on this subject and better yet have someone who has tried it before help you. Changing voltages could be fatal if you do not know what you are doing. Everybody needs a first time but you really should not change anything other than suggested from someone you think knows what he is talking about and always try to get a confirmation from another part to be sure that a change is all right and would not kill your PC.

Let us say that you have build that PC for the first time and you made a mistake in seating the CPU cooler. Then you wanna try some overclocking and you raise the vcore voltage and suddenly temperatures are going way over what is considered safe - that could kill your CPU in no time.

I really suggest you post some pictures of your current temperatures by using Realtemps or some other program that can show you the core temperatures. And please also post a picture of CPU-Z showing what you currently run.

I always use Everest Ultima to find out what my temperature are - it is a fine program and its free for a trial period of 30 days I think it is. Here is a link - make sure you get the Ultima. CPU-Z you can find on the net.

                    Re: x58 ud5 overclocking advice?

They mean the Uncore Multiplier should always be at least 2x the memory multiplier, or greater (2x +1, 2x +2, ect)

Here try this for 3.36 you will need to find your own stable Vcore and QPI/Vtt though

If you want higher CPU Speed let us know because you will need to use a different ram speed or 200 blck

Ok I got 3.2 to work although i had no section in the bios that says Extreme Memory Profile (x,M,p) that I could see. Ok what do I need to change to push it further? How far should I push it so I am still stable? Right now my cpu idle temps are about 40c at 3.2. Thanks so much for taking the time to help guys!

One thing I noticed so far is that even though it boots fine, when I put it to sleep mode then click my mouse button to wake the computer it doesnt boot up. It just powers up with no signal to the monitor and all the motherboard leds are on as if its booting up. the display on the bottom of the motherboard reads bF and doesnt change. I try to hit the reset button on the computer and nothing. So I have to power off then reboot. When it boots up it says that it is resuming windows. I guess that means that its unstable?

Ok I tried upping the voltage a bit and still it wouldnt wake up. Then I set the bios to default and now the computer wont go into sleep mode at all! The monitor goes off but power is still on and the display shows FF. I think I will try the bios upgrade.

Ok I updated the bios to f8. I noticed the keyboard problem, when it asks if you want to start windows normally or in safe mode, the keyboard doesnt work. Also my sound no longer works for my xfi card. And now if I go into sleep mode the monitor goes out but it will not power off unless I hit the power button or reset it. Any ideas? Do i have a bad motherboard?
                            Thanks

                              Re: x58 ud5 overclocking advice?

Hi shaned, the native keyboard support trouble is a known issue with the current F8 Bios, I much like you are waiting for the next bios, stasio should publish a beta or somethin which corrects it on the near future.
also, your ram isnt x.m.p if theres no option displayed in the bios for it.
this means, you must follow the uncore freq = dram freq x 2 + 1 rule, and your bios settings are going to be more 'fiddley' compared to if you had XMP capable memeory, but dont worry though, the ram you have is still very nice :)
