  • GA-MA770T-UD3P Issues?

    Hi all,
Wonder if someone can shed some light on an issue I'm having:
    First up, the system:
    Board: Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P
CPU: AMD Phenom II X2 550 BE
    Mem: 2Gb OCZ DDR3 1066 Platinum
    HDD: OCZ Vertex 30Gb
    DVD: Pioneer BDC-S02

Assembled OK and board appears to POST OK.
I am not running RAID on the board.
Tried to install Windows RC1 on this system and I just kept getting failed installs.
By this I mean it would start the install OK, but randomly the keyboard, mouse/install would just hang at various points.
Thought it might be the install so tried it on a different box and installed fine.
Thought it might be memory issues so ran memtest 86+ for 3 days with no issues.
Tried installing windows XP as an option, but same issues occur.
Flashed to F2c BIOS, same problems.
Changed DVD, HDD, PSU, SATA cables and ports and GPU, but without any success!

The board has had the CMOS cleared, battery removed and all components re-seated.
    Board recognises the CPU OK.
On boot I get the Update DMI message, sometimes with update successful, but always reappears.

So this leaves me with RMA'ing the board/the processor.
Can anyone give me some ideas as to how to narrow down if this is a motherboard/CPU issue?
Or indeed any other thoughts to try at all before I RMA the board?

    Re: GA-MA770T-UD3P Issues?

Windows 7 RC1 you mean? Just checking, I guess so since I see you tried XP

Have you tried with a PS/2 mouse and Keyboard, just incase you are using USB ones and they are the issue? If you are using USB ones and can't try PS/2 ones please try going in Integrated Peripherals BIOS page and disable Legacy USB Storge Detect and see if that has any affect

By the way, what BIOS are you using anyway? Could be part of the issue maybe if you are using one that does not support your CPU (Like maybe F1?). To tell which you are using on the MAIN page of the BIOS press F9 and you should see System info which will show the BIOS Version.

      Re: GA-MA770T-UD3P Issues?

      Cheers Lsdmeasap
Yeah it's the RC1 version, had my doubts about the image after reading some of the forums, but that wasn't causing the issue.

Mouse and k'board are already PS/2.
Bios has been flashed to the latest (F2c) and all the usual things done after flashing (reset CMOS, Remove battery, load Optimized defaults in BIOS (and Fail safe just in case!))
And appears to support the chip OK as well.

      Also tried disabling onboard:
      USB
      Lan
      Parallel
      Serial
(and just about anything else I could find that didn't sound needed!!)

      But all with no avail.
So kinda running out of ideas about what's left to try!!
Might just have to grit my teeth and RMA it, getting far too impatient to get this setup running!!

        Re: GA-MA770T-UD3P Issues?

Don't use fail safe, if you are now that may be part of the issue. Always Use optimized defaults.

Do you have a floppy installed? If so uninstall it and disable Floppy from the BIOS and remove it from the boot order and try again. Sometimes this helps, and I have had a few installs hang on me (W/Floppy Installed) and I just let it set a few and the install eventually finished up a few minutes later

It may be the board is faulty? Not sure, I guess you cannot test that CPU anywhere can you? If not, please try the install again using my thoughts above. Like I said, when it hangs leave it for 5-10 minutes and I bet you it will finish and then it will be fine after you get all installed

          Re: GA-MA770T-UD3P Issues?

Thanks for your suggestions Lsdmeasap, and apologies for being off air for a while, unfortunately they made no difference, and heres why...

It was all down to the memory timings, apparently the OCZ RAM doesn't come to life with the 1.5v the board was feeding it, and the board was also feeding some daft timings, so did some tweaking.
Have some testing to do to find the perfect 100% stable setup, but I started with this post (**BOARD TEST** ASUS P5K3 Deluxe DDR3 - OCZ Forum) in the OCZ Memory forums and applied some of the timings shown, complete with upping some of the voltages and it all appears to work like a dream on the test rig, complete with extra cores unlocked on the 550BE
Now to disassemble the current HTPC and put the real thing together over a !!

Thanks for all your suggestions and I thought I'd eliminated memory issues after running memtest for 3 days with no issues!!! Obviously not and lesson to self to add another thing to the checklist for new builds and random windows reboot issues along with SATA drivers, SSD formatting and USB installs.....

            Re: GA-MA770T-UD3P Issues?

My friend is having a very similar problem with the following system:

            MOBO: GA-MA770T-UD3P (Same!)
            RAM: OCZ3G10664GK (Similar!)
            CPU: AMD Phenom II X3
            HDD: WD2500AAKS

At first we were getting a "disk read error" on the initial install of Windows, after the first reboot. So we thought it may have been a SATA driver problem or the bios wasn't emulating IDE correctly, but everything we tried hasn't worked. After some time every install would just go into a "boot loop", endlessly restarting.

We haven't yet tried to update the bios or go through all the memory testing, but do you think it's the same problem? If so can someone guide us through the process of correcting it? It's his first build, not use to troubleshooting, thanks!

Now which OS is your friend installing? We need to install with 2GB or less on some Windows programs. After the SP2 or SP3 update then install the other 2GB of ram.

                        Re: GA-MA770T-UD3P Issues?

Windows XP SP2 and a slipstreamed disk of it with the SATA driver included. I also think we've tried booting with only one sick of ram, I'm not sure that we've tried installing. We're about to try installing Windows 7 RC 1 to eliminate any possibility of SATA/AHCI driver problems. If it doesn't boot with Windows 7 RC 1, we're going to try an old IDE drive that has Windows XP already installed, and see if it boots. If both do not work we'll update the BIOS and proceed with any suggestions you have.

Good. I know what slipstreaming is but never performed it because I use the XP with SP2on it with a floppy with the RAID drivers and perform the F6 option at setup. The bios settings have to be set first. Windows xp sp2 should install with 4GB and the F6 option if RAID or AHCI drivers are needed. Then upgrade to Windows 7. This would be the better way. You will want to get the memory settings right first though.

The Windows 7 installer could not see his HDD, and asked for the SATA/Mass Storage driver. Which we couldn't provide, even with the driver on his Flash drive and with his motherboard driver CD. Though while searching for the driver it does show his Local Disk C, the hell? The IDE drive just BSOD immediately on start up.

We've also been getting a "Verify DMI Pool Data" error along with the "Disk Read Error". We've yet to update the BIOS or play much with it beyond the AHCI settings.

He wants to RAID0? With 2 hard drives?
