  • EX-58 UD5 - BIOS F7 vs F8d

    My System config :

    Core i7 - 920 - C0 - Stepping 4
    Gigabyte EX58 - UD5
    OCZ 1066 MHz 3 x 2GB Triple Channel.

With the F7 BIOS I was able to overclock the system easily , All i did was set Bclk to 175 MHz and got a nice speed bump to 3.5 GHz (Turbo mode enabled and hence 3.67 GHz) , all this with just the V core set to 1.25 V.

System Memory was at 1050 MHz (x 6 Multiplier ). I will jump into Mem overclocking when i get my new triple channel OCZ 1600 MHz DIMMS.

After updating to F8d BIOS , I just could'nt overclock at all , most overclocking attemps would result with an overclocking recovery and a message at post saying overclocking failed.

How ever I do love the new AHCI rom on the F8d BIOS which decreases the post time dramatically.

Any idea what the diffrence is between F7 and F8d BIOS? I Have reverted back to F7 and my overclocking has been stable as ever again.

Any one else expereince the same? I would like to use the newer AHCI rom , but for now am stuck with F7 bios cause F8d doesnt let me overclocking at all , I have tried higher voltages etc and just nothing works...

Suggestions aould be helpful , also is there anyone who could mod the F7 BIOS with the new AHCI rom? This would be a great combo for me!

I have the same problem with UD4. After flashing to F6b with AHCI 1.20E, most of my overclocking fails... even bclk 140. I reverted back to F6a. Lets wait for new beta BIOS because I think the latest one is rushed and not refined.

          Hi,

Intresting that x58 exreme and ud5 beta bios are different version.

How can it be ? They are the same board. (except cooling)

Maybe try the newer bios version from extreme bios.

Tomorrow I will try that bios with my x58-x and report how it's operate.
Now I'm easy get 3950 with stock voltages.

@Pubem , I did try the Extreme BIOS as well and had the exact same issues , hence for now I have reverted back to F7 (Official release) BIOS which is just about perfect for my overclocking.

The AHCI rom on F7 is really slow , but I have requested member GHz to mod a F7 official release BIOS with the newer faster AHCI rom , and if this works it will be a perfect combination for me.

Do update the thread on your results with F8x BIOS as well.

              Hello Nforce,

I mean f8f version. It's newer than d, but only for extreme. (?)
Did you tried this one ?

                  Hi Nforce,

Now I'm on f8f. Regarding to your problem:
Overclock seems to be still fine.

I have so many issues with this board, I need to test changes.
I found that CPU FAN controll works now as it should.
Until now it was turned off random base. Now it's ok too.

AHCI faster. Welcome ! It was a real pain. (especially x48 ds5, which has same ahci controller but was much faster)

Squezing problem : I don't know yet, it's depend on bios settings (especially c1e). (and PSU!)

But boot up still slow. (after turning on computer there is a second "click", and boot screen comes up 5-6 sec. ( have done video boot up time x48 ds5 vs x58- extreme, ds5 beats in boot time comparing tox58. It's a shame).

So, I'm suggest also to try this BIOS version too !

Now I'm again on 3570/1700 (170) with 1.268/1.25. (3950 for special cases only:-)

                  Good Luck !

                    Re: EX-58 UD5 - BIOS F7 vs F8d

Looks like it was a memory issue for me with my Older OCZ DIMMS and F8x BIOS.
with the new OCZ3P1600LV6GK Kit , the system Overclocks absolutely fine even with the F8d BIOS ! looks like the issue was with the older OCZ DIMMS in combination with the mem updates in F8d BIOS.

Either way am absolutely Glad I can use the F8d BIOS with these new OCZ DIMMS and keep my overclocked settings as well.

Mods please close this thread. Issue resolved.

                      Hi,

                      Please don't close :-)

Please report what memory speed you can reach.
Mine memory kit is as yours, I can reach "only" 1850.
Timings not helped. If you can reach more, maybe I would tweak them again.

Nice to hear that your problem solved.

                        @pubem
My OCZ dimms are a little diffrent than yours. Mine is a Non XMP DIMM, OCZ3P1600LV6GK Kit .

                        It Looks stable @ 1600 , 7,7,7,24 , 1T @ 1.66V and 1.35V QPI/VTT.

I havent tried overclocking beyong 1600 MHz yet want to ensure the stability at 1600 MHz first. Will experiment a little more in the next couple of days and keep this thread updated.

@ 1850 MHz Mem what timings are you using and the Voltages?

Were you sucessfull at running anything close to 4.0 GHz ? 200 Mhz Bclk?

                          Re: EX-58 UD5 - BIOS F7 vs F8d

Prime Stable 12 hrs , OOCT stable 3 hrs ( didnt have time to run it for more than 3 hrs).

                          i920 C0 - 3360 MHz , 1.25V CPU V core
                          OCZ - OCZ3P1600LV6GK @ 1600 , 7,7,7,24 , 1T @ 1.66V and 1.35V QPI/VTT.

Max CPU temperature during 15 Hrs of total stress tests - 69 C.

Now i feel fairly confident that the DIMMS are stable and I think am gonna slow;y start overclocking them higher!

Target - 175 MHz Bclk , DIMMS @ 1750 MHz - Timings would love to see Cas 7 work.... will keep the thread posted with results.

                            Hi Nforce,

                            Sorry for late response.

So my max is 3990, and memory about 1850 with 10-10-10-28.
                            voltage is default 1.64.

On 1860-1870 there are errors, but this is a nice result I think from 1600 ram.

Now I'm going for an 1866 version of this ram, I have to chance to replace them. (and go for 12GB)

                            Regards,

Ouch, you should not have to use CAS 10 for only 18xx speed, unless you do not have things set right or the memory is not of good quality. I have 2 sets of 1600 here that will both do 2000+ with CAS 9
