  • Shrill noise from power supply

I tested my new build to see if it would work but when the power supply is turned on, it makes a shrill noise and nothing works. Is this a sign of a bad power supply or mobo? All is put in is PS,Mobo,CPU and HD. Everything is connected to its place.

    I have a Thermaltake Purepower 500W, Intel E5200, and EP45-UD3R

Re: Shrill noise from power supply

I will assume this Shrill noise is The fan screaming probably a bearing issue. ive seen it before. Try giving it a firm thump and see if it stops. As for nothing working you may need to give a little more detail. Have you got ram in? What about a video card? When you turn your computer on, does the CPU and or Case fans spin up? any lights on the front or on the MB? Regardless if yuor psu is making this noise take it back, get a new one.

Re: Shrill noise from power supply

We can't discuss RMA, but go ahead and test everything else as soon as you can and be sure that it is just fine. GL

      Edit:

I had a PSU go out like that recently and all the other hardware survived in perfect condition. So sry if I sounded like there was any need for panic. Just get another PSU to test it all.

I haven't put any ram or graphic card, when I press the power button nothing turns on (Fan,HD,etc) or any lights.

          I didn't know that.

          1. Well, everybody plugs in the 24 pin and forgets the 4/8Pin CPU Power plug... everybody has. So, make sure that its also plugged in.
          2. And disconnecting and reconnecting the 24 pin is another thing to always try after trying to clear CMOS does not solve something.
          3. If the shrill noise was just a ball bearing like NimrodAUS suggested, try one RAM chip and a Video Card. But...
          4. ...if paranoid- which is never a bad thing with PCs- use a temporary PSU that is tried-and-true to test the MOBO.

          GL

          Edit:

Go buy this... its on sale (reduced -$60 to $119 for now) and about the best ever in its price range and it is ALSO modular: (SWEET!!!) After you confirm ur MOBO works of course. ;)

              1. I've double checked that.
              2. I've tried that.
              3. I've actually tried it without RAM and video card and no luck.
              4. And I've tried the PSU that I thought was broken with my other computer and it worked fine.

I'm starting to think it is the motherboard causing this but I want to make sure before I return it just incase there's some sort of solution. And this computer is mostly a media/family computer so I don't really need all that power.

Have you ruled out all possibilities that there is a short between the MOBO and Case?

Take MB out of your case and place it on a piece of cardboard and power it on. If it works you have a case to MB short. Use just like MB,Ram and PS. I think.

Okay that solves the problem, it booted up without the case so im guessing it was a case to motherboard shorting. How do I fix this?

I suppose it would be silly of me to ask if your using standoff's on your MB?

If yes some sort of insulated washers on the screws maybe?

But that still to me doesn't splain srill noise from PS. Of course it may have sounded like thats where it came from though.

Actually I'm not using headers, I'm just using screws that came with it.

Well Thats a new one. What would cause that? Sounds like it could have caused the issue. It still be getting a new PSU either way as they dont make Shrill noises cause they feel like it. You for sure need to use the brass little "Standoff's" that come with you case to elevate your MB from the steel. It would also be rather hard to get the rear connectors lined up without these. The case should be marked for ATX size MB to show you were to put the screws.
