  • ud3r/q9550 underclocked?

Hi... I posted here earlier about my first build, and it's been running great. However, I noticed in cpuz that the core was running at 2ghz, and the multiplier was 6.
In the MIT in bios it shows a multiplier of 8.5
I would like to get this thing running at least at stock speed, or if someone can point me in the right direction for a slight (3.2ghz?) overclock, it would be great.
Thanks in advance for any help

    Here are some system specs:
    Gigabyte GA_EP45-UD3R P45 775r
    Intel Q9550 @2.83 (e0)
    msi GTX260+ OCV2 (216 cores)
    GSkill 2Gx2 f2-8500cl5d-4gbpk
Asus arctic square cooler w/arctic silver 5 thermal paste
    windows XP sp3
    WD 640g HD

I've run prime95 and some games and temps have been good. Speedfan shows temp#1 (southbridge?)a little warm but not bad.

      Re: ud3r/q9550 underclocked?

I noticed when the cpu is under a load (Either from OCCT or a game) the multiplier jumps back up to 8.5 and the clock speed is the normal 2.83

        Re: ud3r/q9550 underclocked?

In bios, check if you have "CPU Eist Function"=Enabled.
In case you do, this function will allow you to run at lower clock setting when doing nothing in windows. Disable if you'd like your cpu running at stock speeds all the time.

Thanks Stavogoliam... I disabled eist, but it didn't help. I was thinking it might be some kind of cpu throttling too.

            Re: ud3r/q9550 underclocked?

It probably is.. as stav said, make sure the bios change are saved, sometimes bios will revert to default if it doesnt like them.

Otherwise cpu will poot up at the lowest speed it needs.Enabled is handy for checking your cpu temp is 7-10 degrees above outside air temp at idle tho.

              Re: ud3r/q9550 underclocked?

The mobo manual briefly describes these settings. They are basically power saving options that lower power consumption and heat under lighter loads.

These are the recommended settings while overclocking:
              CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E)................: [Disabled]
              C2/C2E State Support....................: [Disabled]
              x C4/C4E State Support..................: [Disabled]
CPU Thermal Monitor 2(TM2) .........: [Enabled]
              CPU EIST Function...........................: [Disabled]

Under moderate to full loads, your system will run at full speeds. The main window in cpu-z will show any changes while your system is running.

To overclock your system, check this post for the info we will need.

                Re: ud3r/q9550 underclocked?

Thanks ProfJim! That worked... I don't mind saving power, I just wated to make sure my new rig was OK. I'll spend the next week or so trying to educate myself by reading other posts, and I'll get back with all my info for a mild overclock (Stability and longevity as well a quiet fans are priorities for me so it wont be anything extreme).
                Thanks again for everyone's patience.

                  Re: ud3r/q9550 underclocked?

If you don't mind a schizophrenic system, you can have the best of all worlds; quiet, low power setup, moderate o/c, & screaming o/c. It's all a matter of saving multiple bios profiles. Read the first part of this post for more info.

                  Glad to have helped out.
