  • Crucial DDR3 on GA-P35C-DS3R

I have Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R (Rev 2.0) motherboard with the version F10 BIOS.

    I recently decided to upgrade my DDR2 to 4GB of DDR3, purchasing 2x 2GB Crucial Ballistix modules which are 6-6-6-20 1.8v (BL2KIT25664TA1336).

I have tried as suggested by crucial, to set the timings manually to 6-6-6-20 for the DDR3, however this causes the system to crash instantly - the bios takes two attempts then resets the timings back to automatic and reboots. But I have noticed the Auto-detect timings are 9-9-9-24 (which is not what is stated on the modules), however the voltage appears to be set a 1.6v (read from the Bios) but I can't see any option to change this to 1.8v apart from overvolting by +0.2v which doesn't fix it.

I have tried running Memtest86+ with the DDR3 at 1.6v 9-9-9-24 and it just comes up with all errors. I checked my old DDR2 at auto-timings with Memtest and it seemed okay, so I guess this should imply the motherboard is okay.

Is there anything else I can try - or will this memory not work with my motherboard?

    Re: Crucial DDR3 on GA-P35C-DS3R

Crucial have responded to say 'This does appear a settings or driver error with your BIOS and the reason the Memtest is constantly showing errors is down to the settings not being correct. It maybe best at this stage contacting your manufacturer to see if this a known issue and they will advise on the updates you require.'

    Any ideas?

          Re: Crucial DDR3 on GA-P35C-DS3R

I've just noticed these specs for the GA-P35C-DS3R 2.0 on the Gigabyte website:
          _____________________________
          DDR3:
          1. 2 x 1.5V DDR3 DIMM sockets supporting up to 4 GB of system memory
          2. Dual channel memory architecture
          3. Support for DDR3 1333*/1066/800 MHz memory modules

          DDR2:
          1. 4 x 1.8V DDR2 DIMM sockets supporting up to 8 GB of system memory
          2. Dual channel memory architecture
          3. Support for DDR2 1066*/800/667 MHz memory modules
          _____________________________

Does this mean only DDR3 of 1.5V and not 1.8V is supported?

            Re: Crucial DDR3 on GA-P35C-DS3R

Sorry for the late reply here, I have been very far behind as of late.

Hold on and try these setting changes and see how Memtest86+ goes for you, use slots 1+3

            [code]Robust Graphics Booster___________ [Auto]
            CPU Clock Ratio ____________ [ 9 X]
Fine Clock Ratio ____________ N/A << Why the N/A? You should see this option, but be unable to use it (Greyed out) until you select 8 as your CPU Multi. If you do not see it then you need to load optimized defaults, set your ram voltage only and save/apply/reboot F10. Then go BACK to the BIOS and set your SATA/Disk settings again and then make any changes in the MIT section you need to. If you are using RAID please see here for tips on loading optimized with RAID >>

Performance Enhance = N/A << Issue (#2) Set to Standard, your BIOS DOES have this and you NEED to set it to standard please as it is on Turbo by default. It is right Below C.I.A.2 >>

About your voltage question, no all that means is the "Standard" DDR2/DDR3 is supported. DDR2 standard is 1.8V and DDR3 standard is 1.5V, Both have varying amounts above that as a "Norm" when it comes to enthusiast memory such as most DDR2 is 2.0-2.1 and most DDR3 for non X58 boards is 1.7-1.9+

I have not used any P35 boards that support DDR3, so I cannot say for sure this combination is fully compatible, but I have not heard or seen any reports of it not working together. I do think it is just the things I noted above that you have not set that are causing you issues

              Re: Crucial DDR3 on GA-P35C-DS3R

Thank you Lsdmeasap for your detailed reponse.

I have set all your suggestions except:
(G)MCH OverVoltage Control________+0.3V (no range option)
              System Memory Multiplier___________4.0~ 1333 straping (no 4.00B option only 4.0# or 4.0~)
(timings are set manually to 6-6-6-20, but it still auto-detects 9-9-9-24)

The Health Status, gives an output for the DDR Voltage as 1.712v - is this a bit low?

The system is much more stable now - no crashes on boot-up and I can even get into Windows! However Memtest86+ gives errors for tests #3 and #4 (moving inversions).

Is there anything further I can try?

                Re: Crucial DDR3 on GA-P35C-DS3R

For your ram use 4.00# (# is 333 strap, ~ is 266 strap) or use 4.00 without a letter/symbol if you have that as an option

Auto detect will always/often show wrong settings and not use them as well. You do mean in the left of the BIOS correct, if so ignore that. What you see in windows in CPU-z Memory tab is what matters

Your ram voltage may be ok, if your ram is stable at that. Some may be and some may not be and end up needed the full specified amount. If you need the full 1.8V then you will just have to set +0.35 or +0.4, and then of course check how much that is.

Post me your full settings you are using now and I will see if I can advise anything else that should help. Do go ahead and try more voltage as that ram may need the full 1.8V to run those tight timings so that could be the only issue

I have tried System memory Multiplier on 4.0# and DDR Overvoltage on +0.3V and +0.4V, but I am still getting errors on Test #3 onwards on Memtest86+ v2.11.

                    Re: Crucial DDR3 on GA-P35C-DS3R

Have you tried only +0.2 MCH? Do you have 4.00 memory multi without a symbol/letter?

Can you try slots 2+4 instead of 1+3?

I would only be using 1.8V or less (+0.3) as that is the rated amount you should not need more likely. Is that giving you close to that amount or much less, you should check to see what each setting gives you in PC Health section after a reboot
