  • Gigabyte Ep45-UD3P LPT Port Printer USB Cable

Hi everyone, I have a need to connect my old HP IIIP Laserjet which is a parrel port printer to my system. I have a cable that converts parrel to usb which works on my old computer and this printer. However I can't get it to install the printer in XP x64. The USB device shows up as an unknown device and I can't get it to change the driver over to the HP one.

Does this have anything to do with the the LPT port settings in the bios?

There is an optional LPT cable available for this mother board.
I'm not sure about the adapter you are using.

If you choose to use the mobo's built-in Parallel (LPT) port to connect your printer, then yes you must properly set the bios's LPT port settings. However if only ever intending to use a USB connected printer setup, then not necessary to have bios's LPT port settings enabled.

I have an old parallel port HP deskjet 720C which I have run with no problems on a EP45-UD3P. Works just fine regardless of whether connected via the mobo's built-in parallel connector or by USB!

Maybe you just have a XP x64 printer driver issue ---> have you checked the HP website to see if a suitable x64 driver exists for your HP IIIP Laserjet printer?

Re: Gigabyte Ep45-UD3P LPT Port Printer USB Cable

        Thanks for the reply guys.

The HP site was of no help. There help says that the driver for the HP LaserJet IIIP is built into XP. That is true because on the other machine I ad the printer on I did the install and it worked using the USB cable. Not the case with XP x64. I am sure it is a driver problem as well.

I can't get the printer installed via the USB cable with this OS.

You could of course try connecting your printer via the mobo's bulit-in Parallel port connector. You will however need to get yourself a Motherboard Parallel Port Connector cable similar to that shown at link below,

IDC 26 / DB25, Motherboard Parallel Port Connector cable

On the other hand, if your problem is the lack of "any" suitable XP x64 printer driver, then now may be the time to either, go back to using XP x32, or, getting yourself another printer?

Just checked the HP website and it shows that XP x64 is supposed to have driver support for a HP Laserjet III printer. And even explains how to install it via LPT port or USB; see link:-

HP LaserJet III Printer*-* Download drivers and software - HP Business Support Center

And some other links that may help with your problems,

Business support forums - Laserjet 3p for MS XP

Business support forums - Connecting a LaserJet IIIp via a parallel to USB converter

Business support forums - HP LaserJet IIIP Driver for XP
