yeah, there is nothing there. i am using the F6 BIOS. is there something else i can try?

Check out the ADVANCED BIOS FEATURES in your user's manual. My UD3P shows it in the manual and in my bios, immediately below the HDD SMART CAPABILITY. It's called CPU Multi-Threading and defaults to ENABLED.
The manual has a NOTE that says:

This item is present only if you install a CPU that supports this feature.

When all else fails: RTFM (read the friggen manual)

i have a q9550 @ 4.2 ghz and only encode a few days per month, so i would like to spend most of my time with only two cores at 2.830 ghz.

Maybe the multi-threading option is only for dual core chips.
Does your user's manual show this option in the bios section?

You can always create 2 bios profiles; 1 for encoding and 1 for the rest of the time.

I guess you only want a half-fast computer most of the time.

yeah, even at low frequencies the chip idles in the mid 50 temp range. it's in a rack under my bed so i definitely don't need it running that hot all the time. if i could get 2 cores at 2ghz or something that would be great.

OUCH!!!

Maybe a 2nd bios profile could have EIST and the C1/C2/C4 options enabled to save power consumption. You probably have all of these settings disabled with your current overclock.

Wouldn't under-clocking your system lower temps considerably. I've read that many HTPC setups underclock their systems for lower power consumption, lower temps, and less noise from slower fan speeds.

speedstep is on. it steps me down to 1.6 GHz, but it still idles at 54. what i need are options in the BIOS to turn off the cores. i guess i'll try earlier versions.

Is a better cpu cooler an option? If your idle temps are normal for your setup, maybe a higher end cpu case would lower temps. My case uses 7 fans, four of which are 140mm fans. I could also install an 80mm fan that would cool the underside of the cpu. My CM 690 case is hardly high end, but I've seen other newer cases that would easily outperform my setup.

Hopefully someone else will have a solution.

it's a watercooled 2U rack. can't change it. don't worry about it though, it's alright.

FWIW --

I'm not at home right now, so I don't have my EP45-UD3R / Q9550 sitting in front of me. So going by memory here....

Did you try turning on the "Advanced Features" in the BIOS? From the main BIOS screen, type (Ctrl)(F1)<ctrl><f1>. Then when you enter the BIOS sub-menu, there will be a few things there that weren't there before.

Don't know if this will solve your problem, but it's easy to try.</f1></ctrl>
