  • 3.2-3.3ghz E5200 / EP45UD3L Settings?

    Hi there!

My first post here, this seems like a great community and I have already learned alot about my new rig, thanks to everyone for that! I am new to the OC world although I have built PCs for a few years, just kept them stock.

I am looking for a mild overclock in the 3.2 to 3.3ghz range as this will mostly be a HTPC for playing games and surfing the web on my plasma. I have read alot of posts and pretty much think I have it stable but would like a 2nd pair of eyes to look over it as I am still a bit confused with some of the settings.

    My setup is:
    E5200
    Newegg.com - Intel Pentium E5200 Wolfdale 2.5GHz 2MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops

    cpuz validation

I filled in the template below with my current settings. So far I have been able to post and run some stress testing programs without any problems. IBT has done 10 passes at 100% passed though I did see 64c in Hardware monitor, typically it idles at 39-40c. Everest only gets it up to about 50c for some reason. Super Pi has been run to 32m with no problems. Prime 95 went for over an hour as well. I know I need to do a 24 hour run but wanted to be sure it was pretty close on the settings before I do that.

Here is what I have so far, any comments are appreciated as I am sure some of this can be tweaked, especially the ram. Again, I am not looking for a 4ghz monster, just want to hit the sweet spot of speed and stability.

Should i use a 333mhz Host Freq instead of 266 and then change the SPD/Latch settings? This still has me a bit confused tbh. I tried that and somehow ended up with a 1333 fsb in cpuz so I must have had the wrong setting in there. Maybe someone can post an example of how I would get to 1066 fsb with 333 host frequency?

Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions, so far the new comp has run pretty well, it was super smooth on left 4 dead! Can't wait to see it on my plasma!

    Re: 3.2-3.3ghz E5200 / EP45UD3L Settings?

Made some changes, got the vcore in bios down to 1.250 and the ram voltage to 1.9, did 10 passes on IBT at 100%!

Just trying to figure out the rest, thanks in advance!

Hey, sorry for the late reply here I am backed up a few pages still!

That sounds good, 10 passes on IBT!!

So were clear on things, please post back your full settings again, and new questions since it sounds like things have changed or you got the hang of something.

Let me know what you need further help with and I will be happy to help ya out

        Re: 3.2-3.3ghz E5200 / EP45UD3L Settings?

Hey LSD, no problem on the late reply, looks like you have your hands full in this forum! Great community btw

Anyway, not much has changed but I did lower the secondary timings on the ram. Just went into Everest and looked at what the ram was capable of and chose the settings for 400mhz. I think I can go tighter as I am running it at 266, but its completely stable where it is at and I don't want to trade off a few milliseconds for stability. I might still play with it though!

I will post where it is at now since it might benefit someone else looking for a mild OC. Alot of the posts are trying to OC the crud out of these things which is great for bragging rights but not for an HTPC.

Just had a run with Left for Dead and Bioshock last night and they are both smooth as butter with my 4850 on my 50" plasma, damn near orgasmic (ok, only a nerd would appreciate it, I admit it!)

Here is where I ended up:

        MB Intelligent Tweaker(M.I.T.)
Robust Graphics Booster ...............: Fast (i had switched this to Turbo, but didnt' really notice anything so back to fast)
        CPU Clock Ratio ..........................: 12
        Fine CPU Clock Ratio.....................:.5
        CPU Frequency ...........................: 3.33

        Clock Chip Control
        Standard Clock Control
        CPU Host Clock Control..................: [Enabled]
CPU Host Frequency (Mhz) ............: 266Mhz (might switch this to 333 and play with the mem multiplier but it seems to be fine at 266)
        PCI Express Frequency (Mhz) .........:Auto

        C.I.A.2 .................................:[Disabled]

        Advanced Clock Control [Press Enter]
        CPU Clock Drive...........................: <<< 800
PCI Express Clock Drive.................: <<< 900
        CPU Clock Skew (ps)....................: <<<
        MCH Clock Skew (ps)...................: <<<

        DRAM Performance Control
        Performance Enhance...................: [STANDARD]
Extreme Memory Profile (X.M.P.).....: Disabled (left this at disabled)
(G)MCH Frequency Latch...............: [Auto] (left on auto)
System Memory Multiplier ..............: 4.00A (I think this was right as it got me to 1066)

        Memory Frequency (Mhz) ..............: 1066Mhz
        DRAM Timing Selectable ................: [Manual]

Standard Timing Control (according to everest my ram can do 3-4-4-10 at 266mhz with much tighter secondary timings but this seems fine for now)
        CAS Latency Time........................5
        tRCD .........................................5
        tRP'...........................................5
        tRAS..........................................15

Set all below to highest suggested first, then you can lower later one at a time

Advanced Timing Control (the only thing I really went back to tweak)
        tRRD...........................................3 was at 4
        tWTR..........................................3 was at 4
        tWR............................................6 was at 8
        tRFC...........................................54 was at 72
        tRTP...........................................3 was at 4
Command Rate (CMD) ....................:2 (was at 0 before, but that could not have been right)

        Driving Strength Profiles
Driving Strength ............................1066 (switched from auto, works fine)(in bios) CPUZ shows 1.200 (no stability probs and it seems to be well under the max so I will prob leave it on this) (should I set to Auto?)(did not have this option)(I have 2x2gb, should I drop to 1.1? - Still not sure about this one, I might try lowering it back to stock)(did not see this option)(OCZ website says my ram is 2.1-2.2v. No post at 1.8 but 1.9 works fine so I left it here)(did not see these 3 options, maybe in another spot?)
        Channel A Reference 0.900V............: <<< Leave
        Channel B Reference 0.900V............: <<< Leave

        Advanced Settings
Limit CPUID Max. to 3.....................: [Disabled]
        No-Execute Memory Protect............: [Enabled]
        CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E)................: [Disabled]
        C2/C2E State Support....................: [Disabled]
        x C4/C4E State Support..................: [Disabled]

        CPU EIST Function.........................: [Disabled]
Virtualization Technology................: [Disabled] Enabled if you use Vmware/Virtual PC

        Integrated Peripherals
Legacy USB Storage Detect ..............[Enabled] *Note* Must be enabled to flash from USB

So, she is running fine at 3325mhz for a 33% OC. Have not done a 24 hour run on anything but 10 passes on IBT at 100% showed me that its not flakey. Idles at 43c with the case closed up and I might add an extraction fan as I only have 1 in the front atm. The only prob is that its pretty loud with the Vid card fan so I am reluctant to add another fan.

Best $75 processor out there and in a year or so I can move up to a cheap quad! I'd better start reading all of those quad OC threads....

          Re: 3.2-3.3ghz E5200 / EP45UD3L Settings?

Ya, you wont be able to go lower then 555-112/15 main timings at 1066, especially with tRD (Static tRead) of 6. But loosening that up to even attempt it would be a waste, that is good tRD for 1066 speeds, 5 may work but maybe not depending on voltages (MCH Core, Vtt-Termination)

Yes, leave CPU Ref on Auto as well as all other Ref voltages

MCH Core is tricky on P45. Normally 2x2GB means more then stock voltage would be needed, but some work better under stock so you just have to try and see. This setting also will need more or less depending on the actual FSB Speed, Ram speed, tRD in use, and the Memory Multi/MCH Strap you are using. So you may get away with less, but maybe not without trading off something else like tRD which would not be worth it

Ya, that 2.1-2.2V is just the max allowed under warranty, not always what it needs. I would expect at 1066 you would need 2.0v at least but hey if 1.9 works for you then great. If you ever get errors, I would bump this first to 1.95-2.0 and if that does not correct them then you would need to look into MCH Core voltage or Vtt voltages

Options you do not see are just board specific, you have the "L" version which is the budget model so they are hidden and set to stock values.

Ya, I would add you a exhaust fan just to prolong the life of things. Just get a real quite one, even very low RPM would be better then NO Fan.

You like your 4850 eh, sounds like it works great on your plasma! I just picked me up two Sapphire 3870 toxic's, seems I am always a gen. or two behind when it comes to GFX, but I don't game so it does not bother me so much

          All looks very good man!

          *EDIT*

Oops forgot to say, please set your PCI Express to 100 now so you dont maybe forget later if you overclock to 333 FSB. It's a good thing to get in the habit of noticing that it is set to 100

Great, thanks for the follow up. I'll make those suggested changes but it sounds like I am in the right ball park.

I too am usually a gen or two behind and this is the first time I have really gotten a "current" gfx card, but for $125 after rebate the 4850 was too good to pass up and everything looks really nice with some of the options turned up on it!

            Thanks again!

Ya, it does look like you are coming along good man!

Ya, I did look at some of the 48xx cards, but I wanted to go crossfire and that was just too pricey for me. I found 2 3870 Toxics on ebay one for $65 and the other for $70 so I think I did well for the price, especially since I don't game and just wanted crossfire for aesthetics and benchmarks
