EP45-UD3R - LAN / network problems

EP45-UD3R - Q8200 - 2x2GB KVR800D2N5K2/4G - Seasonic S12-600W
2MB PCI s3 virge (don't have a spare pcie) - Samsung F1 1TB
bios on optimized default settings with pci-e 100MHz, FSB to 400MHz,

currently it's on a testbench with stock intel cooler.

network is an Asus WL500g connected to the net, and an old 10/100 switch between 2 of the 3 pc's connected to that asus.

My issue: Both with Vista64 and XP32 shared drives stop responding, both from other machines uploading and downloading, and from this machine to other machines. All other machines are XP32.

I'm connected to this board using remote desktop, but also when not connected this happens.
It seems to keep the internet connection fine, but I'm not up or downloading for now, so can't tell.

2 different working cables, one was brand new, no change.

any ideas?

So the issue is with Vista connecting to XP?

no, it's using shared folders from either to the other, both ways.

RDP works fine. But as soon as I start to get a file from one machine to another, (10MB or 2GB, doesn't matter), it stops working and loses the shared drive.
I'll do some more troubleshooting later, but wanted to hear any ideas.

Disable the firewall on both already to be sure I take it?
