Re: GA-EP45-UD3P and Mushkin Memory problems

Hm, I'm sorry it didn't work :(

This problem is really mysteriours as there are people with the same mainboard and RAM and one guy has the problem while the other doesn't.
You could RMA the board, but some people got another "bad" one back. People have tried many different RAM kits on thei "bad" board though so I'm pretty sure it's not the RAM itself.
I'm guessing this is a BIOS issue that only manifests in some boards. It also might help to wait for a new BIOS and live with single channel for a while.

One more thing! Don't know why I didn't think of it until Supershanks mentioned it at clunk.org.uk...

Try playing with MCH Ref a litlle bit, you can't really destroy anything but this may very well solve the problem since it can improve signal quality inside the memory controller.

:) be carefull of theorists.
If someone has experience of your board/cpu/memory their advice may be usefull.
Otherwise it may be just a waste of time.

Re: GA-EP45-UD3P and Mushkin Memory problems

Well there's nothing other than theories to try since no one who actually has that problem has been able to get to the root of it.

As someone who does have a UD3 board what is your solution for the Problem? So far you ahven't posted one so my theories based on my experience with the P45 DS3L which has an identical BIOS are better nothing...

Considering that I've helped people solve almost every problem except this one in this forum I guess I can claim that I know what I'm talking about.

Re: GA-EP45-UD3P and Mushkin Memory problems

Please give me your full settings you are trying for 4GB Dual channel and I can help for sure!

I do see you mentioned some CPU Multi issues, sounds to me like you have not loaded Optimized Defaults yet and applied/saved/rebooted. This is a MUST For any new CPU/Setup or BIOS flash. Please do so, and see here for warnings and information about Loading Optimized defaults >>>

This ram works fine in Gigabyte P45 boards, here is my review with some settings for you >>>

You may have a bad board as mentioned, but let me have your settings and full specs and I will advise

Re: GA-EP45-UD3P and Mushkin Memory problems

What's the easiest way to copy and paste my settings here? Everything is just at the default settings. Anything I may have touched has always been returned to "Auto" or "Normal", whatever the original setting may have been.

I did load Optimized Defaults and saved the settings. I did this when it was suggested here and I did it again when I updated the BIOS. I also cleared the CMOS and it once again had the wrong CPU settings, but I did a load Optimized Defaults once again and everything was fixed.

I think the memory is fine. I've used every memory testing app that has been suggested to me (here and elsewhere) and it always passes. Plus I tried the Easytune utility to auto overclock the system. My thinking was if the memory was the problem it would fail on the overclock. It hit 3.87Ghz and the system appeared stable. I did not do any stress testing, but web browsing and checking email were fine. I've since put everything back to the default settings.

I do sometimes get an error from the EasyTune 6 program. I have it running in the system tray and I will occasionally see an error box about "CPU ID". I'll copy the error exactly if I see it again. It only shows up every so often and doesn't seem to affect anything. The EasyTune software still runs and IDs the CPU correctly. So it might just be a bug.

I only have about a week to return stuff so I hope we can figure this out. I've been waiting for an email back from Mushkin, but it seems your testing has ruled out any compatability issues. I kept getting what I would call a form RMA respones from them and was hoping to get more detailed help today. No email as of yet though.

Thanks

Re: GA-EP45-UD3P and Mushkin Memory problems

Do try both sets of channels if you have issues incase you happen to have a bad channel. On that thought, have you ran memtest86+ with one stick of ram, one slot at a time to test each slot? Just wondering if maybe you do have a bad slot, that would be how to test it

Try this for changes from the above, with 2x2GB for now, in dual channel. This should work just fine

Those settings did not work. It just goes into a reboot cycle.

I also can not test one stick per slot. I can only use slots DDR2_1 and DDR2_2 for testing when I try a single stick in DDR2_3 or DDR2_4 I get the reboot loop. Is that the problem, bad slots 3 and 4? (DD2_1 and DDR2_3 are one channel and DDR2_2 and SSR2_4 are the other)

If you put performance enhance on standard, and set Ram voltage to 2.0V can you try that, and then test slot 3 and 4 again?

Sounds like you may have a bad set of slots, or they are grounding out maybe, check behind them to be sure

If you have a Bad set (IE 3+4) then that would be why the settings fail, as none would work.

So you have been using this PC in single channel then or what?

Also, please try the above all again, with ram in slots 1+3 with these changes >>>>

Re: GA-EP45-UD3P and Mushkin Memory problems

Wow, I just googled the problem I've been having and this thread came up.

I'm seeing the exact same thing with my gigabyte board (same model) and mushkin ram (two sticks of 2gb ddr2 1066).

I checked the voltages, timings, different slot setups, but the computer still has a hard time booting in dual channel. All 4 gigs work fine side-by-side in single channel and passed memtest + another mem diagnostic w/o any errors for several passes (even individually). But if I try and dual channel them, its stuck in a reboot loop you can only break by pressing the restart button a few times, which isn't exactly a good method (strange thing is windows runs fine once it finally gets out of the loop, and it registers 4 gigs dual-channeled).

I've also only got about a week to do returns so I'm curious to see what kind of fix there could be for this. Quite a few customer feedback reports on newegg reported dual channel problems on this motherboard.

Also I just registered for this post... lol

Even though it boots windows I wouldn't be constant rebooting my PC, but then again there might not be any disadvantage from it I don't know.

Any luck with my suggestions, either of you?

Yeah, even if it works... it's to say the least annoying so I'm just using single channel now.

LSD I'll try your setup this afternoon... would any of the variables be different if I'm using a different processor and ram set? (Here are the ones I ordered)

memory:
Newegg.com - mushkin 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory

cpu:
Newegg.com - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops
