  • EP43-DS3L / PC2-8500 problem

    Hi there... first time poster and first time overclocker here. I've scoured/lurked these boards for answers and read as much as I could including a couple O/C guides. Thanks in advance if anyone can point me in a direction.

    My problem is that the RAM will not run at 1066 speed. Nothing I do can get these dimms to run above 400mhz/800hz. I ran memtest86 2.11 for 6 hours with no errors at the bios settings below so I think the dimms are good, however memtest sees them as "399 MHz (DDR799) / CAS 5-6-6-18 / Dual Channel; 4095M 4381 MB/s", but all that is probably from my Bios settings right? If I set these at 1066 in the bios, the thing won't post. The default bios says "Memory Frequency (Mhz) ....800..........: 800" so it's definitely not seeing these as 1066. In WinXP 64, MemSet's (& cpuz) SPD shows the voltage at 1.8 but PC Health shows it slightly above 2.0. They're in slots 1 and 3. Should I try slots 2 and 4 or switching which dimm is A? I have tried several things per the many posts on this board. I see many people having problems with PC2-8500 2x2 in P43/P45 boards though, and I'm wondering if it's possible. Per Lsdmeasap, 2x2 pc2-8500 "always" requires manual DRAM settings in an EP43. This gives me hope. I'm hoping someone here can either tell me to give up and run the memory at 800 or point me to a site that explains how the Skews work for manually setting the timing for this DIMM/MB combination.E7400 (stock cooler)

    Forgot to mention that my BIOS version was F8 during my testing, but I just updated it to F9a (beta) to see if that helped.

      FYI, found a nice explanation of clock skew and the effects it has on system memory here. Reading that now...

        Re: EP43-DS3L / PC2-8500 problem

        Update: Tried several things yesterday... cpu & mch skews (400/100, 200/0, 100/0), beta f9a bios, f7 bios, etc. I'm back to 333x10.5, 3.5GHz and expensive 800 MHz RAM. As I see it, the ep45 and the OCZ Gold PC2-8500 just don't communicate at 1066 MHz. The fsb can't seem to get beyond about 340, possibly due to the memory. That compares to the 400+ MHz that many get. I'm thinking of returning the dimms to Microcenter since I bought the board there too and the packaging implies compatibility.

          Re: EP43-DS3L / PC2-8500 problem

          Update: Got some input from the OCZ site:
          "CPU Host Frequency to 266
          Set the System Memory multiplier to 4.0a (I believe it is A, check the right margin for the 266 setting)
          Set the ram timings to
          CAS = 5
          Trcd = 6
          Trp = 6
          Tras = 18
          Memory voltage at 2.0V to start. Try 2.1V if that fails.

          Everything else at Auto."

          I then tried that every which way to no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions on some magic memory settings that might make this ep43-ds3l run this memory faster than 800 MHz? It's rock solid at 800 with the e7400 at 3.5GHz, but the board won't even post at 1066. At my wit's end... I've tried everything I could google.

              Ha! Swapped out my OCZ Gold PC2-8500 for Patriot PC2-8500 and voila, I'm getting 1066 speed stably now. Freaking OCZ goes back tomorrow. Now I'll see what I can do with this machine.

                Re: EP43-DS3L / PC2-8500 problem

                RAM is very often not compatible. There are just too many combinations possible for the manufacturers tor try all and because of this there can always be incompatabilities.
                I have the OCZ Platinum 1066 4GB kit btw and it runs perfectly. I'm happy with it so I'm getting another one actually to play with 8GB :)
