  • GA-EP45-UD3P difficulty

Every time I start my PC after it's been unplugged it has trouble starting.

Specifically it will keep a black screen and not POST until it has power cycled a few times. Sometimes it will get through the first screen, memory and IDE controllers and then hang. There are times I can get into BIOS but won't be able to access M.I.T. or it will lock up.

I will occasionally get a blue screen during Windows loading, but they never seem to lead to anything concrete and don't repeat or show up once the system is running even after hours of gaming.

Restarts from Windows does not reproduce this problem.

Any help would be appreciated as im not quite sure where to start.

      Re: GA-EP45-UD3P difficulty

      RAM DDR2

BIOS MIT settings were all optimized defaults/auto. I can provide the details if necessary, but i've been playing around with the settings since my original post.

I've been trying to monkey around with manually setting the timings and upping the voltage to the RAM's specifications. I was only able to run chkdsk and vista memory test and havent had time to continue playing with it to see if the changes had any effect on cold start up.

        Re: GA-EP45-UD3P difficulty

the changes made it much harder to get the system to load...more power cycles without any video output and partial POST screens, unable to del into BIOS and an error when i was able to get into BIOS about the system failing to load.

BIOS with the manual input of timings and voltage

I haven't gotten around to making the proposed changes just yet, but i thought it was worth mentioning that disabling virtualization technology prevents the machine from posting at all.

                any idea why that is?

MCH Core at 1.22 and it still needs a cycle or 2 to post after saving changes.

at 1.18 it finally booted after reverting to the backup bios im guessing as i got the gigabyte graphic and the default MIT settings.

at 1.05 it posted right away after saving changes, auto too.

i unplugged the machine for 5 min or so and it posted right away, but im skeptical that it will after its been unplugged for longer. ill check again tomorrow night.

                    any thoughts/feedback?

                      Re: GA-EP45-UD3P difficulty

sounds like a weak power supply? do you have another to test with.

also the P45 has a bug in it where it will power off if the cpu freq doesnt match the cpu speed (on first boot up, or when changing the speed for the first time), make sure the ratio matches the cpu's ratio and its not under/overclocked.

                        Re: GA-EP45-UD3P difficulty

i dont have another power supply. is there a way to test my current one either with software or with a meter?

the cpu freq is set at the spec, no over or underclocking.

It seems more likely that the startup issues are are matter of getting the bios dialed in as making changes there have a direct impact on how well the system starts.

                          Re: GA-EP45-UD3P difficulty

sure enough it still needs numerous power cycles before a good post.

would setting the timings to the memory's Jedec#0 spd for 800MHz 1.8v 5,5,5,15 allow it to post any better? are there other settings that i can continue to mess around with?

messing around with the voltages makes me a little nervous so im not going to monkey around without direction.

i'd really like to sort this out. im getting to the point where im seriously considering going with different ram that has been confirmed to work with this board.

did some research and checked the voltage that the psu is putting out when it's sitting idle in bios.
3.297, 4.998, 12.07 when measured with my fluke, so all is well there

usually volts aren't the problem but amps. if it cant get enough amps it will fail.
