  • Is there an overclocking guide for the UD3P?

    Hello All,

I searched but I couldn't find an overall geneal O/C guide for the UD3P board.

I just reciently purchased the UD3P coming from an nVidia based board and the sheer number of options in the BIOS are overwhelming.

Here is a list of my components.
My systems is going to consist of:
    1. GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P LGA 775 (not going i7 for the time being)*
    2. E8500 (hopefully clocked to 4.0+ GHz)*
    3. G.Skill 8800 (2X2GB) 1100MHz RAM*
    4. Corsair 750W PSU*
    5. 2X500GB WD hard Drives in RAID 0*
    6. 500GB and 160GB external USB HD for file backup*
    7. GTX285 (when they are released)
    8. G92 8800GTS running PhysX*
    9. Vista 64bit*
    10. MM U2-UFO case*
    11. G15 Gaming Keyboard*
    12. G9 Gaming Mouse*
    13. G51 5.1 Surround Sound Speakers*
    14. DVD RW*
    15. 3.5" Floppy Drive (nostalgia)*
    16. Razor Barracuda 5.1 Gaming Headset*

    *items already purchased or owned.

If you can point me in the direction of a good giud I sure would appreciate it.

    Thanks,
    Jason

Re: Is there an overclocking guide for the UD3P?

Hello! I was trying to find a good thread to post some nub questions, and since this one is so current and also my current motherboard, I would like to ask a few quick questions about overclocking my CPU.

I have just began today attempts to overlock my CPU. Now, I have seen some amazing speeds on the UD3P, and unfortunately, my system crashes before I even come close. My CPU is a E7200, and the motherboard is running it at a stock FSB 266 with a multiplier of 9.5 for a Rated FSB of 1066.

After flashing bios to F6 (supposedly more compatible with Easytune 6), I used Easytune to try and inch up the FSB. It failed immediately at 300 FSB, and at 285 FSB it ran a while with Folding at Home running for about 10 minutes, and then the computer crashed while I was creating my account to post here =). Of course, when Easytune was upping my FSB, the memory speeds and CPU speeds both went. This might always be the case when you overclock but I haven't overclocked a PC in years!

So it seems I can't overclock at all? Did I just get a bad draw of my CPU / Ram, or is there something else going on here that I have missed? I have an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro installed right now, and the core temps never go above 49 C with Folding running, so I don't think its overheating...

            Here are my system Specs

            Windows XP SP3
Antec 300 Case (with fans installed in all slots)
            Antec Earthwatts 500 Watt PSU
            Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P Motherboard (Bios F6)
Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 Wolfdale 2.53 GHz
            Corsair XMS2 DHX 4GB (PC 6400 with 4-4-4-12 timings)
            Saphire Radeon HD 4870 512MB
            Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS
            2 SATA HDD's
            1 DVD Burner/Reader

The last time it crashed it ramped up the speed of my CPU Cooler just as it crashed, but I'm not sure why... it is controlled automatically by BIOS, but again, the CPU temps stay around 50 C under load. If there is anything else that you would like to know about my system or things I should also post here, let me know!

            Thanks for your help!

Re: Is there an overclocking guide for the UD3P?

Easytune isnt the way to go, sure you can use it but it is not good at all to overclock with really. Should all be done in the BIOS.

That board will for sure do some amazing things, that CPU not so much. But it will overclock for sure

Please post me a link to your ram, and what speed you want to try to run and I will give you some settings to use. You can fill this out now with what you are trying, if you have tried any BIOS clocking yet >>>

Re: Is there an overclocking guide for the UD3P?

                Here is my ram: Newegg.com - CORSAIR XMS2 DHX 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory .

I found out that the F6 bios was giving me random system crashes while under load for some reason, especially during games, so I had to revert back to F5, and then all of the crashes went away. I also tried teaking from the bios this time, and got slightly better results. I was able to achieve stability (under prime95 stress tests) at 316 x 9.5 FSB for a speed of 3.00 GHz. It failed to post at 320, so I guess around there is the limit for the current settings.

All the settings below are my current settings, I did not alter them at all (as was suggested in some of the text next to a few of the settings).

I marked some settings that were different than template (just in case) with an *.
I was able to get the memory timing back down to 5-5-5-15 after I switched it from the Auto settings it had for 316 FSB. They are rated at 4-4-4-12, but after I tried to put them back down to 4-4-4-12, it wouldn't post, so I guess it wont overclock with those timings under the current settings...

As a final note, with these settings my temperatures for core0/core1 is being reported as 58/58 by CoreTemp (63/63 by SpeedFan). Are these temperatures too high? My heatsink is listed above (Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro) so atleast it isn't the stock heatsink... I also have AC MX-2 Thermal Compound applied.

Thanks so much for your help! =)

Re: Is there an overclocking guide for the UD3P?

Well you may have a FSB Hole at 320 so you may want to try 340-350 just to be sure that is not the issue

You can run your ram at 444-12 for sure, just likely some wrong settings, I will have a look and advise ya.

Your temps, is that idle temps reported by CoreTemp (All that Matters to me as Speedfan not so great)

Try these settings, should get your ram going at 444-12.

** Pre-Post Edit*** , Ahh I see you are using 900+ ram speed, ya you would need to use looser timings then. 444-12 will likely only work to 800-850Mhz

If you would like a faster speed table let me know and I will post you one. But I think you will get yourself further once you set some of the things I noted out below

Re: Is there an overclocking guide for the UD3P?

Okay, I set all of my settings to what you suggested, except for the Static tRead Values for the two channels, because I am not sure exactly what "6/7-10 333/B MCH - 8/9-12 400/D MCH" means... sorry lol XD. It just has an option to pick from a range of 5-15 or something (which I'm sure you already knew.. :) ).

Those are the temps in CoreTemp at full load under Prime95. I noticed however that if I put the FSB at 315 instead of 316 it ran at about 54/55 under 100% load instead of 58/59... might do that.

Also, would I get better performance if I left the memory multiplier on Auto and have it run at 948 and 5-5-5-15 timings, or go to 2.40B for 758 Mhz and run at 4-4-4-12 timings? I tried the 3.20B and 2.66D multipliers at all suggested timings and system failed to post every time.

My last questions are 1) If I ever try to overclock with raising the voltage of my vcore, how would I go about that (how much would I raise the vcore, and then how much on the FSB) to find a good overclock. Also, how high is it safe to raise the vcore? and 2) Could it be my memory that is holding my system back?

Re: Is there an overclocking guide for the UD3P?

                          6/7-10 333/B MCH - 8/9-12 400/D

Means if you are using a Ram Multiplier with B on it use 7-10, and if you are using one with D on it use 9-12. The 6 on the B would be hardest to get stable, same applies to the 8 on the D strap

Only you can benchmark the different settings you asked about and see which is best for your setup. Using 2.40 and 3.20 depends on all other settings such as your FSB, all other ram timings, and voltages used

Did you read the overclocking Guide? I know it is not based on your board, but it will provide you with some answers to your last few questions about overclocking and how to go about doing it. Please do give it a read thru a few times

                            Alright,

I am a little confused, I can't seem to get the system to boot into windows with the above settings. I was able to get to 3.8 using the settings I posted initially and it seemed stable at that point. Right now I am having a problem getting more that 3.8.

I am having to do a repair of my OS at this point because of the BSODs that I was getting trying to get into windows --sigh-- I am hoping that I don't have to do a reinstall.
