  • P45T-DS3R with FSB @ 400mhz

I've been trying to get my P45T-DS3R's FSB to 400mhz in an effort to get the most out of my DDR3 1600 RAM (and eventually OC the CPU) but I'm not having any luck. I think it is connected to the MCH's voltage setting but I do not know how high can safely take it.

    CPU: Q9550 (currently at FSB x 7)
    RAM: 4gig DDR3 1600 (Corsair, 1.8v 9-9-9-24)

The only voltage that allows my FSB to climb higher than 350mhz is the MCH, but it is currently at 1.3 (BIOS seems to default to 1.1) and I'm not sure how high it can be and still be safe without and dedicated fan (although the case has excellent airflow). At 1.3, I able to reach 370mhz, but I haven't run Prime95 long enough at the frequency to claim that it is stable.

Any help/thoughts would be great. Thanks! :)

    Re: P45T-DS3R with FSB @ 400mhz

Sorry to bump, but I'm lost otherwise. :) Maybe some quick summary questions:

    1) How high can I safely raise the MCH voltage setting on an P45T-DS3R?
    2) Am I correct in thinking that the board should be able to hit 400mhz without issue since I've dropped the Q9550's multiplier, or I am over-simplifying?
    3) Am I missing an obvious setting that would make the board boot @ 400 without issues?

    Many thanks!

      Re: P45T-DS3R with FSB @ 400mhz

You can use 1.2-1.3/35 for your ram. More is likely not needed, and likely not even that much is needed. I would have to assume since you did not mention other voltages that you are leaving them in auto? If so, STOP NOW as Auto Vtt (Termination) and PLL will kill your CPU.

Ya, that board and CPU can do 400 for sure, no need to drop the multi either as that only means higher FSB to reach what you want.

Without seeing your settings I could not say what obviously may be stopping you, but I would think likely way to many Auto's being used it a huge part of it

Please do fill this out with what you are trying that fails and I will advise back >>>

        Re: P45T-DS3R with FSB @ 400mhz

Thanks, Lsdmeasap. I've been reading through some of your previous posts (sorry about the bump) and changed the PLL already. However, I'm clear on what the VTT is.

Some of these settings are left-overs from failed attempts, others are (hopefully) safe stability/overhead tweaks.

I'm not really aiming for the Moon, but instead am hoping to hit (CPU)3.4mhz and (RAM)1600mhz. Any help you could offer would be great and a huge relief as my head (and knowledge) are clearly stuck in the days of my e6400 & P35-DS3P. :)

            Re: P45T-DS3R with FSB @ 400mhz

Thank you again for your help!

'Driving Strength Profiles' & 'ICH Core' are not appearing in my BIOS (F3). I also just checked ET6 and the only two xCH options it has outside of 'Core' and 'I/O' are 'MCH Refrence' @ .76 and "MCH/DRAM Refrence' @ .75. Otherwise I've made the changes you suggested and will start playing with the FSB.

As for the Vcore, you're absolutely right but I'll just drag that upwards as I go. I had it a 1.3x at one point without heat (Prime95) being an issue (sub 60) so I should have sufficient breathing room there.

The RAM is tw3x4g1600c9dhx but I could find no usefull link outside of a PDF which will tell you:

"Each module pair is tested together at
            1600MHz

Tested together at 1600MHz, Vdimm =
1.80V, at latency settings of 9-9-9-24

            SPD programmed at:
            JEDEC standard 9-9-9-24 values at
            1333MHz"

They are burried until castles of metal and are seated under a large fan so 1.9-2.0v should be safe.

              Re: P45T-DS3R with FSB @ 400mhz

Well, my initial (lazy) attempt at plugging in your suggestions (and pushing the CPU Host Frequency up to 400 which I assume you wanted me to do) yeilded the expected result of me looking at a black screen. :) After clearing the CMOS and entering the settings again minus the jump to 400mhz, I've found that I can not get the FSB to budge at all past 333. It would appear that it is conected with settings the System Memory Multiplier to 4d.
I've dropped it down to 3.33d and am slowly moving up the FSB food chain.

Right now I'm at 370 (3.15 and 1232). Would that mean that my RAM is acting up? If so, 1333 (3.4 and 1333 @ 400mhz) is just fine considering that removing the RAM to RMA it requires removing the CPU's HS which requires removing the MOBO etc etc. :P

If not, what settings might help? There are simply so many settings here that are currently complete jibberish to me.

Edit: Since I'm yanking up the DRAM voltage, should I also be the same for termination? What about the four instances of Ch-x [xxxx] Reference?

              Thanks. :)

                Re: P45T-DS3R with FSB @ 400mhz

What BIOS version are you using? Driving Strength profiles should be there and not need the hotkey to find them. ICH Core may or may not be on your board, but the driving strengths should be for sure unless you are using a old BIOS or did not load optimized and apply after your last flash

Ya, the D multi is likely not to work at all, or well anyway, until you get at or close to 400 FSB. Since you have 3.33D working then that is good, but you may want to go back to B strap until you get at 400 FSB then swtich to D since you are working your way up instead of trying hard to get 400+ FSB Working straight out. Thats what I do, I pick a spot and MAKE it work. I cant handle working my way up, drives me nuts

And sorry, there may or may not be a 4.00D setting, I musta been lost when I was replying to you!!!

Also note!!! SORRY! I left this out of the above table, Auto will not work so use these settings >>>

                Channel A & B
                Static tRead Value.........................:6/7-10 333/B MCH - 8/9-12 400/D MCH

Ram voltage should be 1.6ish-1.8 for 1333-1600 respectively

Leave all the ref voltages on Auto for now. Termination is all up to your CPU and how much Vcore you add.

Push the Vtt and Vcore as you go, keeping Vtt under Vcore of course. All chips are different so it is hard to advise best about that, just keep the Vtt under 1.38-1.4 MAX and at should not be needed for only 400MHz. I would guess maybe, depending on vcore used 1.28-1.34 would be good Vtt for 400 Mhz

                  Re: P45T-DS3R with FSB @ 400mhz

Just to make sure that we are on the same page, this is where I grabbed the F3 BIOS that I'm using: GIGABYTE - Support&Download - Motherboard - BIOS - GA-EP45T-DS3R (rev. 1.0)

I'm not seeing Driving Strength Profiles, however. What is its function? Is it something that can be reproduced through manual settings?

By the way, there is an option about letting the board deal with vdroop (line calibration, or something like that). I currently have it disabled. Should I have it on?

                  Thanks! :)

Ya, I see it is not in your BIOS, Driving Strength that is. Sorry about my confusion

That boards BIOS for sure needs some updating! The P45T-UD3 models all have it, still not in this beta either. But you can test it out if you like, please do read this if you plan to test it out >>>

Keep in mind, beta is beta! I see some users say that one is better then the final, others disagree and some even say F2 is better

Thanks, Lsdmeasap. I'll give the Beta a shot as I'm having no luck otherwise. So far, everything I've tried still fails to get me past ~175 while still remaining stable. Since I've tried underclocking both the CPU and the RAM, I guessing that it is the Mobo that is giving me trouble. If all else fails I'll starting hunting for a new one, any thoughts? I've come to prefer Gigabyte boards but their collection of LGA775 boards that support DDR3 seem a bit sparse.

Well they do have new P45's that support DDR3 >>>
                        Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-EP45T-UD3P LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards

                        Newegg.com - EP45t

Nice deals on Open boxes >>
                        Newegg.com - DDR3 1900, Intel P45, Intel P43/P45, GIGABYTE, Intel Motherboards, Motherboards, Computer Hardware

I would however avoid getting a P45C (DDR2/DDR3) which I kindly left out of the links above, but they do also have several of those types as well.

                          Re: P45T-DS3R with FSB @ 400mhz

The lack of BIOS updates makes me nervous now but the UD3P version of the p45 does look nice. Two questions:

1: Given that the GIGABYTE GA-EP45T-UD3P takes more and faster RAM, is it reasonable to assume that its FSB will be a bit more meaty than my current board?

2: Is it safe to assume that my current board is the issue given that Prime95 is cranking out errors instantly when I have the FSB @ 400, even though the CPU and RAM are underclocked, and I have applied your suggestions of lower timings and higher voltages (plus am now using the beta BIOS)?

And again, thank you. I would have been troubleshooting blind without your help.

                            Re: P45T-DS3R with FSB @ 400mhz

Ya P35 and P45 DDR3 boards do seem to get left behind, likely not as much customers is why

Well it is the same chipset, but it does have all that copper inside the board PCB, so it may

FSB of 400 is not underclocked at all, and those issues you see could be any number of incorrect voltages still or yes the Beta BIOS

Do you have errors at stock? Have you tested this ram one by one at stock yet?
