  • Slow Memory writing on EP45-DS3P + Geil Ultra?

    Hy all!

I have a "problem". I think, my memory writing speed is too low.
    My specs:

    Gigabyte EP45-DS3P
    Intel Q6600
    Geil Ultra 4gbyte KIT @ 1066mhz @ 2V
    ATi Radeon HD3870

    Everest 4.60.1500 Speeds:
    Read: ~6800-7400mbyte/sec
    Write: ~4800mbyte/sec
    Copy: ~5500mbyte/sec
    Latency: ~63-75ns

In bios all settings are set to Auto except Performance Enhance, MCH Core and DRAM voltage, which are Extreme, 1.2V and 2.0V.

    Code:
    CAS Latency (CL) 5T
RAS To CAS Delay (tRCD) 5T
    RAS Precharge (tRP) 5T

    DIMM3 Clock Fine Delay 9T
    DIMM4 Clock Fine Delay 3T
My friend has bought a new pc, with P35 chipset, E8400 CPU and Kingmax memory. His writing speed is about 7000mbyte/sec.

    What's wrong with my memory?

Re: Slow Memory writing on EP45-DS3P + Geil Ultra?

Please post your FULL settings so I can see everything including your ram multi and strap you are using.

Is your friend not at stock maybe? But even if he is his CPU is much newer so memory throughput would be greater as he is likely also using a faster NB Strap, and he may be using 2x1GB and you use 2x2 right? Strap choice may be your issue as I see your read times are good. What do you get with Driving strength 800?

Skews helps with stability more then anything. I see you have issues with Static tRead Value of 10, that is ok as lower is better anyway

Please also post a direct link to your exact ram, or the model # so I can go look it up

My "friend" lives away from me, and he is using 2x2gbyte too, but he has 1333mhz CPU FSB (E8400).

Yes, the reading value is good and could improve to ~7400mbyte/sec with 63ns latency. But the writing speed didn't get more..

          Memory model number: GX22GB8500PDC

          Thank you!

Re: Slow Memory writing on EP45-DS3P + Geil Ultra?

Hey may just have more expensive ram then? Is he showing you pics of his test? I believe him as my 6400 Ram scores are 8-9000 across the board at 900Mhz, just thought I would ask if you are seeing his scores or not. He is also likely not running his CPU at stock as well maybe?

Hey, you say 2x2GB too? The ram model you gave me is 2x1GB? So do you have 2 of these kits or is this not correct? >>>
            Newegg.com - GeIL Ultra 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory

His FSB even at stock is MUCH Faster then yours so that may be part of the difference as well as he would use a different MCH/NB Strap and timings then you, unless you overclock to 333 FSB or more then you could use the 333/B Strap (memory multi's with B on them). Also if he is using slower ram like 800Mhz then he is likely using tighter CAS timings such as 444-12 which would score better as well. And 4x1 may be slower then 2x2 as there is much more strain on the NB with a Quad and 4x1GB then with a dual and 2x2.

What OS do you and him both use as well, and 32 or 64bit? See so many things are different......

Too many things could be and are different so it is not any real comparison anyway, but you should have better scores then you do either way

Here is how mine is as of today at 900Mhz with 800Mhz ram W/ Xeon E3110 (Same as E8400) at 4Ghz Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 >>>

Re: Slow Memory writing on EP45-DS3P + Geil Ultra?

No, I think he has really Kingmax memory (DDR2 2x2GB CL6 @ 1066mhz), and he sent pics about his system. But this is not so important. The real question is, that is my memory writing speed slow? And why?

I've read this forum before bought my PC and therefore bought Geil memory, because I didn't want incompatibility problem. And I tried almost everything with timing before posting, but only reading speed (and latency) get improved (max: read: 7404 / write: 4840 / copy: 5525 / latency: 63.5). I'm using Vista 64bit with all updates, and Everest 4.6.1500 (he is using exact the same).

Sorry, I have 2x2GB kit, the model number comes from the webshop, where I bought. Hmm.. On Geil's website listed as GX24GB8500C5UDC. It's sure, that I have 2x2GB Geil Ultra CL5 @ 1066mhz memory, so cannot be other.

Tomorrow I will try this settings.

Re: Slow Memory writing on EP45-DS3P + Geil Ultra?

Maybe you should overclock to close to his CPU speed so you can use a similar MCH Strap and memory multi. That is likely part of the issue

Try 3.2 (450x7) with 2.40B memory multi, or 8x399 with 2.50A Memory multi, I think your CPU Speed is the issue here maybe

But then again you said you have tried many things, maybe you should RMA the ram? I would if it was me based on the above image showing 800Mhz ram beating that at 1066 at 900

How does it run at 800Mhz with 444-12 timings?

I've attached the results.. Also the same.. Reading speed decreased, but by tuning the timings gets faster..

What does "RMA" mean? Have I damaged my memory? I don't know, but as I can remember, the values weren't changed since I bought my PC. Therefore (and my friend's values) tried to make something. Can I kill/damage my memory just "playing" with timings?

Changing memory driving strength seemly has no (significant) effect..

As I see, it can be a problem, that memory speed mesuring using only one core (documented in Everest), but the highest performance can measure with three cores.

Re: Slow Memory writing on EP45-DS3P + Geil Ultra?

Not much uses all four cores, programs are just still not made for quad cores yet.

I do see plenty of tests and your cores have nothing much to do with your issue here as the same would happen with a dual core only one is used most of the time

No timings cant hurt your ram at all, just voltages.

RMA means Return Merchandise Authorization... Meaning contact the place you bought the ram for a refund and buy different ram or get a replacement set

Here is how a stock set of 800 @ 444-12 should look (Just posted this for you since your last image there is 800Mhz @ 444-12). I did set my multiplier on my CPU to match yours and ram multi as well. Kinda similar, but see below shot of the same ram speed with different Memory Multi and FSB speed

                    (not tweaked)

Your low FSB and ram multi is likely a large part of the slowness of your ram here

See, here is the same ram at the same speeds (800Mhz @ 444-12) with a 333 FSB and 1:1 ram (not tweaked) >>>

See how the FSB and ram multi makes a large difference

Thanks for your help. We had a thought, that the FSB is too low, and seems to be true. I don't want overclock my CPU (or memory) also I will set back every settings to it's normal value.

                      Thank you!

Ya, your FSB is just why you are seeing lower scores
