What is the best way to set up a PWM fan using the fan headers?

I've connected one to Sys_Fan2 but it 'twitching' very slowly and I'm wondering is there another way.

Re: GA-EP45-UD3 and PWM fan headers

Sys_fan2 would not be a good choice, as it often is buggy. CPU is the only other PWM Header. What do you want to use this fan on? It will run on a 3 pin header

Re: GA-EP45-UD3 and PWM fan headers

I've an extra fan at the front-end of my case and thought if on PWM header
it would be on/off as required.

So, could I use the CPU header for the fan and Cpu fan? How would I control the settings regard temperature?

My Bios setting for the Cpu Smart Fan control is [Enabled]
and Cpu Smart Fan mode is [PWM]

Re: GA-EP45-UD3 and PWM fan headers

Well sys_fan2 is the only other PWM Controlled header. You could cut and wire them both together but I would advise against that really.

You can use EasyTune 6 to control fan speeds per temp when smart fan control is enabled >>>

        GIGABYTE - Support - Motherboard - Utility

Sounds like you will either have to hook that front fan to a normal 3 pin header or get a fan controller for it. If you need some help finding a controller let me know, and the price you would like to pay. Some can be very cheap if you dont care about looks/accessibility

thanks for advice. have managed to get fan working by first connecting
4 pin fan plug to the cpu fan header and then connected cpu fan plug to 4 pin male connector on fan.

have 'lost' dvd/cd writer from Bios and in Windows Vista. it powers ok and have checked cables and jumpers, but no joy.

is there a setting in Bios I've missed?

Re: GA-EP45-UD3 and PWM fan headers

What settings do you have set in Integrated Peripherals and Standard CMOS (Also inside on this page for your burner) and what color ports do you have the drive connected to? Or is it IDE burner?

Re: GA-EP45-UD3 and PWM fan headers

              this is an IDE burner.

Standard CMOS does not list the burner. I have five Sata drives connected and Standard CMOS shows them as this:-

on Port0 is Master and Slave
              on Port1 is Slave
              on Port2 is Master
              on Port3 is Master

              Integrated Periph settings

              Sata AHCI Mode [Disabled]
              Sata Port0-3 Native mode [Enabled]

              Onboard Sata/IDE device [Disabled]

Re: GA-EP45-UD3 and PWM fan headers

This must be enabled for IDE >>>
                Onboard Sata/IDE device ............ [Disabled] <<< Enabled
Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode (GIGABYTE SATA2 Chip) .... IDE (Default)

Re: GA-EP45-UD3 and PWM fan headers: Now DVD/CD problem

Ok, I've changed setting to Enabled, prior to that cleared CMOS reloaded Optimized defaults rebooted and adjusted settings then rebooted again.

Still no DVD/CD hardware seen in Standard CMOS or in Vista.

Is it possible board is 'flacky' and I should just try another?

Are you SURE the drive is ok? Have you tried it on the yellow ports yet?

This is an IDE device with cable connection. Jumper set to Master. Could the cable be faulty?

Re: GA-EP45-UD3 and PWM fan headers

Ahh IDE, sorry about that I forgot pretty quick eh!

Hmm Have you tried another cable, do you have the device on the END of the cable for master? Have you tried it in the slave position of the cable and set the jumper to that? Have you tried putting the jumper on Cable Select CS?

Ya, cables can for sure be faulty, I would test another, then test all the things I said above

Thanks for your suggestions. I think you got somewhere. I replaced DVD/CD drive with a previous one and used slave connection on cable but left jumper to Master, re-booted and drive was found in Standard CMOS and Vista.
So maybe the cable is faulty! Either way all at present working. Thanks for all your help and advice. Do you ever sleep?
