  • GA-G31M-S2L and S3 Resume

Hello, hoping someone can help me out here.

I have a GA-G31M-S2L with an ASUS Radeon HD4670 video card. It goes into S3 stanby fine and resumes fine, however there is no video output after resuming. The resume has otherwise succeeded as I can ping and connect to the machine using RDP, there is just no video output to the monitor until I restart it. I've had the issue with both F7 and F8 BIOS, have not used any older versions.

What settings are you using, and what Ram do you have (Link please) and how much of it?

What CPU and OS are you using as well?

When you last flashed you did load/save/apply/reboot optimized defaults correct? If not you need to do that.

Let me see your settings as often Auto or incorrect settings may cause S3 to fail >>>

This is Just a template I use to ask people their settings, pay no attention to the numbers in it, replace with yours

        Re: GA-G31M-S2L and S3 Resume

Vista has some power settings that are quiet different then XP, so be sure you go into control panel, power options and click change plan settings for the plan you have selected then click change advanced power settings and be sure you have things set to how you want them (I would turn off Link state power management in PCI Express and maybe set adaptive display to off in display tab

As for your settings, since you are using Auto that is likely the problem

Are you using only 1 stick of that ram?

Either way, until I hear from you this is what you should set >>>>

        Robust Graphics Booster___________ [Auto]
        CPU Clock Ratio ____________ [10]
        Fine Clock Ratio ____________[0.0]

        Dram RAS# to CAS# Delay_________5
        Dram RAS# Precharge Delay_______5
        Precharge Delay (tRAS)__________ 5

you do not Have to set the below ones but I would advise you at least set the ones in BOLD for now

ACT to ACT Delay (tRRD)_________ 3-4
Rank Write to READ Delay________ 3-6
        Write to Precharge Delay_________ 4-6

        Refresh to ACT Delay______________ 52-62
        Read to Precharge Delay__________ 3-5
Static tRead Value_______________ 6-10 (Set 8 for now to rule this out then test S3)
Static tRead Phase Adjust________ 0 [Auto] << Always Auto

CPU/PCIEX Clock Driving Control [Don't see setting]
CPU Clock Skew Control [Don't see setting]
GMCH Clock Skew Control [Don't see setting]

        System Voltage Control____ [Manual]
DDR2 OverVoltage Control__ [Normal] << I would set +0.1 for 1.9 just to be safe
PCI-E OverVoltage Control_ [Don't see setting]
        FSB OverVoltage Control___ [Normal]
(G)MCH OverVoltage Control [Don't see setting] Try Pressing Control + F1 on the MAIN page of the BIOS and see if you see it after that. The screen will flash then go into MIT. You may not get this option with such a budget model board?

        CPU Voltage Control_______ [Normal]

Limit CPUID Max. to 3.....................: [Disabled]

Thank you for your help, I will try these tonight when I get home from work.

Yes unfortunately only 1 stick as there is a PCI Express 1x card that is installed that is blocking the first slot. It is a avermedia avertv combo card.

For Precharge Delay, is that really 5 or 18?

                    Re: GA-G31M-S2L and S3 Resume

OK, I tried the settings you posted without success, Refresh to ACT Delay I set at 52, Static tRead Value, I set at 8.

Perhaps the issue is the video card. Here is a breakdown of what I am going through.

I am using an ASUS 4670 with HDMI connected to an Onkyo TX-SR605 receiver.

With either the ASUS supplied or Catalyst v8.10 drivers and either the Realtek 2.03 or 2.09 HDMI Audio driver Cold booting generally results in windows locking with a black screen after the green "Window is loading bar" (cannot ping, cannot RDP). It takes a couple of times pressing reset and selecting "Start windows normally" to get it to boot.

Once it is booted up however, it seems to be OK . I am able to select 7.1 in the audio settings and it looks and sounds good.

At this point the machine runs fine until I either power it off, or put it into S3 standby. After resuming the video is not re-initialized but everything else is fine. I can ping it and connect to it with RDP.

With the new Catalyst 8.11 drivers all videos have sound but no picture, just a green screen. After going back to either the ASUS supplied or Catalyst 8.10 drivers the picture returns.

I noticed that Gigabyte now makes a 4670, the GIGABYTE GV-R467D3-512I Radeon HD 4670. If anyone can confirm that with my mainboard, the GA-G31M-S2L, the gigabyte version of this card works as it should with audio and video or HDMI, I will gladly purchase it or even the 4650, after all, this is a pure HTPC mainly used for bluray and other video playback.

                      Re: GA-G31M-S2L and S3 Resume

Try 62 for trfc (Refresh to act) just to be sure.

Your board may have not gotten a S3 BIOS update to fix the issue that was present in P35 boards, have you emailed gigabyte support and asked?

It does sound driver related though for sure. Sorry I do not know if anyone is using that card in your board. I see this user bought the combo, maybe you could join and ask him how it performs >>>
