  • Overclocking GA-EP45-DS3P and E8400

    Hi,

A few months ago I built a new rig. This is my first attempt at overclocking, and I thought I'd share my experiences so far. I could also use some pointers on how to continue.

    This is my system:
    Antec p182
    Enermax Modu82+ 625W
    Gigabyte GA-EP45DS3P (rev.1)
    Intel E8400 (TRUE 120 Extreme)
    OCZ Platinum 4GB PC2-8000
    Geforce 8800 GTS G92
    WD Velociraptor

After some tinkering, I decided to try to get 4.0GHz stable, starting off with these settings in Bios F8.
    Code:

These are the results from testing with Orthos 2004 blend test (the failing core in brackets). The Vcore values are the bios setting, not the actual Vcore. As you can see, I discovered some things along the way, such as the Orthos priority setting (and it does make a difference).

After reading a bit on this forum, I expected better results with a higher MCHcore, but that wasn't the case. I also noticed that at the stable settings, the voltages are lower than what is generally recommended. Is this because of the relaxed memory settings perhaps?

Anyway, I should optimize the memory further. It's 1000 MHz memory, but I can get it to boot at around 1050MHz (a quick try at 6-6-6-25). As far as I can see I have the following options:

However, I havent been able to boot with a FSB higher than 450, and at the 333MHz latch the system is not stable. So, should I settle for 890 MHz?

    Re: Overclocking GA-EP45-DS3P and E8400

Ya, I think your timings may be why less volts work for you. And the fact that you did not add much vtt could also be the cause of your skewed results?

Orthos priority should always be on 1, more will not stress your system fully

And ya know all boards and ram are different so you never really know. Here is what I would advise you try to get stable for 4Ghz or so and your ram at 900. And since you would be underclocking your ram tighter main timings would likely work good for sure.

You should also see this setting below, when you flashed to the latest BIOS (You have right?) you did load and apply optimized defaults and save/reboot right? If not you need to do that, then go back to the BIOS to set all other settings again (Including SATA Settings) >>>

    Driving Strength Profiles
    Driving Strength ............................ 1066

If you did all that above about flashing and you still do not see this, please try the hotkey. On the MAIN Page of the BIOS hit Control + F1 and the screen will flash, then go into MIT section and see if you can find this.

If you have not flashed your BIOS, please consider doing so. And DO NOT USE @BIOS, here is a Qflash Guide I wrote >>>

      Re: Overclocking GA-EP45-DS3P and E8400

Thanks a lot for your reply! I'll try the settings, but it might take some time, since overclocking is not my dayjob...
I thought Orthos should have the highest priority (10). When I use this, I can't use my system for anything else, and it will detect errors faster.

        Re: Overclocking GA-EP45-DS3P and E8400

10 is lowest priority, that is why I suggest to use/leave it on 1

As for why 10 detects errors faster for you I dunno, but using higher then 1 allows other processes to have more priority so that may be why it causes orthos to fail

        Good luck with your testing
