  • MA790FX-DS5 CPU question

    Hi.
I have ordered a Phenom X4 9950 CPU for my MB.
I realized this was a mistake when reading the CPU Support List.
But then it was already too late.

I have not tried it yet, but I wonder if this CPU will run on my MA790FX-DS5 at all, and then perhaps at a reduced speed or something?

    Thanks

Looks to be unsupported as you see. It may or may not work, some CPU's will work with a unsupported BIOS but I kinda think you wont have any luck with that as it is not supported at all on the list

You can try it, I would use the latest BIOS and dont expect much I would think. That is until a Newer BIOS comes out as it looks like similar ones have recently been made compatible with BIOS updates

      Re: MA790FX-DS5 CPU question

Hi, and thank you for the answer.
I sent the same question to Gigabyte Global Technical Service and received the answer today saying :

The Phenom 9950 will not run on the GA-MA790FX-DS5 due to hardware limitation.

      Best regards
      GIGABYTE-Team

I really don't know what to believe because I also found this thread:

...saying that everything works without problems.

I think I'll give it a try and see what happens.
      I will post the results.

      Thanks
      Ole

Hmm, ya not sure what to say about that since you see that thread. If I was you I would PM that user and ask for sure if it is the same exact CPU you mention as I see he only says 9950 isn't there a few variants of that?

I dont know AMD so I thought I better ask about that, as I thought maybe there is a X2 and a X4 type 9950, and just thought if so you should ask him which he did find to work

          Re: MA790FX-DS5 CPU question

I gave it a try last night, and everything seemed to go well.

I booted up, did some adjustments in bios and started to do some usual things. Like surfing, editing some pictures, playing some videos and I even played FarCry 2 for about an hour.

Everything worked smooth and really fast and I was happy for a while.
Then I would try to put some more pressure to the CPU.
I would try to rar and unrar some large files and then it happened.
          Rebooted without warning.
The same thing happened when trying to unpack an ISO-file with UltraISO.

Then I put back my old 64 x2 6000+ CPU
and everything went back to normal.

As far as I know there are 2 types of the Phenom 9950.
          140W (HD995ZFAGHBOX)
          125W (HD995ZXAGHBOX)

I have the 140W, so maybe that's why it do not work properly on my mobo?
Maybe the 125W version will work?

          The GA-MA790FX-DS5 doesn't support 140W CPU.
I think I will buy a GA-MA790FX-DQ6 in some days.

          Sorry for my english.
          Regards
          Ole

Did you update the BIOS to the latest at least?

How much ram do you have installed? If 2x2 you need to change to 327ns on trfc(Refresh to act Delay) not sure what it is called in your board, but it is likely at 127 or 195 now so you should be able to find the setting I mean. And set your ram voltage manually, and if you are using 2x2 add some memory controller voltage
