  • How do I overclock EP45-DS4

    Hello

I want to try and overclock my MB and see, I have read a few things and I give below what I think I will need to do minimum.

My aim is the run a FSB at 400MHz. I have 1066 RAM but at the moment 800 RAM is installed. So I was going with the 1/1 RAM ratio.

    MB Intelligent Tweaker(M.I.T.)
    Robust Graphics Booster ...............: Turbo
    CPU Clock Ratio ..........................: 9x
    Fine CPU Clock Ratio.....................:+0.0
    CPU Frequency ...........................: 3.6 (400x9)

    Clock Chip Control
    Standard Clock Control
    CPU Host Clock Control..................: [Enabled]
CPU Host Frequency (Mhz) ............: 400 Mhz
    PCI Express Frequency (Mhz) .........:100
    C.I.A.2........................................Dis abled

    Advanced Clock Control [Press Enter]
    CPU Clock Drive...........................: 800 mV
PCI Express Clock Drive.................: 900 mV
CPU Clock Skew (ps)....................: 0 ps
MCH Clock Skew (ps)...................: 0 ps

    DRAM Performance Control
    Performance Enhance...................: [Standard]
    Extreme Memory Profile (X.M.P.).....: Auto
    (G)MCH Frequency Latch...............: 400
    System Memory Multiplier ..............: 2.00D
    Memory Frequency (Mhz) ..............: 800
    DRAM Timing Selectable ................: [Auto]

No idea on changing any voltages

    thanks

Re: How do I overclock EP45-DS4

          Hi

I see you mention on some votages that AUTO will overvolt it, would be be the case if C.I.A.2 was on SPORTS as well?

Before I go into the details, could you tell given that you have suggested memory frequency is 900, would it be better for me to put in my dominator 1066-8500 2X 1G 2.1V RAM?

I cannot understand why you say 900Mhz, if the CPU FSB is 400MHz, why do you need the memeory to be faster, and will it given that I am setting system memory multiplier to 2?

Yes, that needs to be disabled for you to overclock and be stable as you are putting your own values in

You can run your 800 ram at 900 just fine normally. But anyway, sorry I mis-typed that above, it is 800Mhz with the above settings!! I will edit it now

You may also try this, but it may not be as stable >>>>

I have set turbo and enhanced, as the only changes and hope the voltages at ok?

              Running F9 BIOS

3DMARK6 orginal non-overclocked was 14810, with this setting I get 16112 approx 8 % increase, a few degrees hotter CPU fan from 1600 to 1800 on average. So overclocking get you some extra but not a lot or would I be better using SPORTS/RACING mode, SPORTS with F8 BIOS reached 15568 nearly as good and when not doing a lot, will return back to normal operation so I am unconvinced that overclocking permanently is of much use.

COULD YOU TELL ME VOLTAGES I NEED TO SET FOR USING C.I.A.2 (SPORTS)

This produced the same results as with 800MHz ram!!
Only difference is the memory multiplier is 2.66 here against 2.00 for 800MHz RAM. So, is there any way to get any better performance out of the RAM and therefore system without increasing the FSB if that is going to increase volatges or heat?

Is the voltageS I set for CPU OK?

I could not advise about using The boards built in overclocking settings as I have never used them

If you do not want to overclock but want the best out of your ram set performance to standard and CIA2 off, and then manually set tight ram timings

Re: How do I overclock EP45-DS4

I think I am going to keep my present Overclock as it does not seem to be taking the temp (and therefore NOISE) much.

                    With the RAM

I orginally had corasir 800MHz ram, I changed it to dominator 1066 ram but both have produced the same 3DMARK6 score, around 16100.

I set my FSB to 402, system memory multipier to 2.66, ie., (2*4/3) for 1066 RAM. For 800MHz RAM I had used 2.4., ie. (2*6/5).

CPU-z shows that now RAM is running at 536MHz and before 400MHz.
I notice with the 800MHz RAM the timing were 6-5-5-18, now with 1066MHz RAM it has gone to 7-6-6-22. This is becuase my DRAM Timing selector is set to AUTO, now is the case that I have to start reducing the timing until I start getting errors in memtest+2.01 and that is all I can do to maximise performance? I have also set performance enhance to enhance, not sure about this

                    thanks

Re: How do I overclock EP45-DS4

Ya, 3D mark is really for testing your card more then anything else.

I would advise you test memory with Everest or SiSandra or RightMark

Those loose main timings (Because you are using Auto) is why your scores are low, with both sets of ram. Your timings for your new ram should be 555-15 likely

Yeap, that is what you need to do. If you want to leave most of the in Auto, I would advise you set and try to lower your Main timings for sure, then Static Tread, and trfc at least those 3 things for sure.

Use Performance Enhance Standard, especially if you plan to lower Static Tread (The Single MOST Performance Enhance Setting you have, aside from the Main timings)

Can you check my voltages are all OK?

I don't know just how stable it is, so far it hasn't crashed on me but maybe you might have a betetr way

Voltage Look good, have you memtested it yet?

Re: How do I overclock EP45-DS4

I use memtest+ 2.01 every time I was playing with the strap and memory multiplier and timings, I was told that I orginally had set the strap to 400, I thought I should keep it near the CPU FSB, but someone on another forum said that I should keep the strap at the orginal CPU FSB rating which for the E8500 is 333. So I just put it to auto and it selects 333 I think.

                            1. Do you agree with this?

                            2. Why is the MB limited to the number of memory multiplier options, if I select the ideal CPU FSB I would like to run so I don't to increase voltages much it would be about 400MHz. But if I keep the strap (GCH LATCH) at 333, 2.66 takes it to 1280 (fails memtest), 2.4 brings it down to 960 to bring it back up I need to increase CPU FSB to 415, so its all a bit this or that, not ideal, is this normal?

                            UPDATE

I did some testing that brings into question the idea that setting the starp to the CPU designed FSB helps performance.

                            SETUP ONE
                            CPU FSB 415
                            CPU 9.5 X 415 = 3.94G

Strap set at auto (therfore 333)
                            memory multiplier 2.4
                            memory running at 960MHz
                            5-5-5-15

                            Result : 3DMARK6 = 16080

                            SETUP TWO
                            CPU FSB 402
                            CPU 9.5 X 402 = 3.81G

                            Strap set at 400
                            memory at 2.66 (i think)
                            memory running at 1072
                            5-5-5-15

                            Result : 3DMARK6 = 16162

So the idea that having strap set at 333, or lower increases system performance is out, what you can do is increase the FSB becuase you have a lower strap, so it would be good for maybe serious overclocking, but for a mild to midium overclock it does not seem to hold any water, anyone has any thoughts?

Ya, I saw your thread over there. 333 Is better performance/faster/tighter, but at your FSB speed you may or may not be able to keep it stable.

The board is not limited to any Memory multipliers. What you choose for MCH latch is what changes your available Memory Multipliers. If you put MCH Latch to Auto you will see you can choose MANY of them (And most will not work, Just FYI) What it is, is that there is a set number of Memory Multipliers for each Northbridge/MCH Strap. So when you Choose a strap manually you would only see those choices available.

Here is a Image I made for a user here with each one shown for each strap >>>

Available Northbridge/MCH Straps & Associated Memory Multipliers

Post to member is here >>>

And yeah you will need to raise CPU Multi or FSB to get the exact memory speed you want for sure.

As for actual Strap performance, they are right at that site. The lowest Strap you can run and be stable will be the best performance. Your testing results vary because your FSB and ram speed Varies and likely does your memory timings if you also had them in Auto
