• EP45-DS3R Overclocking Problems

First time building a computer and I am now trying to overclock with great difficulties.

Antec 900
EP45-DS3R
E8400 w/ Xigmatek Rifle Cooler
XFX GTX 260
Corsair 750TX
OCZ Reaper 4GB 1066 (PC2 8500)
Vista 64bit

Flashed the board to F10. Cannot get to run over 3.2GHz, Would like to run 3.8GHz if possible. I've seached and have seen a couple of setups posted by others such as Lsdmeasap but for some reason they don't work. My guess is the OCZ memory and getting timmings correct. Could someone give me values that work with my system?

Other problems is that the MIT will not let me adjust the Fine CPU Clock Ratio.

Lastly going through the forums I've seen programs such as CPU-Z, prime95, memtest86+ ect. For someone in my possition, what programs would be god for me to use? Easy Tune 6 causes nothing but blue screens for me.

Thanks for all your help,

Matt

Re: EP45-DS3R Overclocking Problems

Should be a very nice system.
The method I did my system overclock... (everyone is a bit different)
First find your Vid for your CPU. Run latest version of CoreTemp and read the Vid. (could be anywhere from .85 to 1.3625v). Go to BIOS and set the following:
CPU enhanced halt: off
CPU EIST: off
CPU host clock control: on
CPU clock ration: 9
CPU host frequency: 333 (for now, this is the FSB)
PCI express frequency: 100
CIA2: off
Performance enchance: standard
System memory multiplier: 2 (for now)
DRAM Timings: 5, 5, 5, 18
System voltage control: manual
CPU voltage control: set to whatever you read as the Vid above.
DDR2 overvoltage control: (add whatever to get to 2.1v, probably default around 1.8v, so add about +.25)

Your CPU is now running at stock speed (3GHz) and your ram is running way, way below spec (666 MHz instead of 1066). Test your system with utilities like Prime95, Orthos, OCCT, Memtest etc. and make sure its stable (should definitely be at this point). Check your CPU core temps (idle and load) with Realtemp. CPU case temp (and other temps), you can use programs like Everest or Speedfan etc.

From there you can raise your CPU host frequency (FSB) and see how far you can get and still be stable. My guess is that you will get to 400 easy without changing anything (i.e. 3.6GHz) as you keep going up, run tests.

When the system starts becoming unstable (fails tests, Windows crashes etc.), you have to start increasing voltages (CPU and possibly FSB and M(CHB) a tad). Max recommended CPU voltage is 1.3625v. Once you get the limit of your CPU speed, you can play with memory settings. At x 2 mem multi, you should be able to have the FSB up to 533, but I think other things will stop you you before you get that high (CPU temps, max voltage, stability etc.).

I would recommend reading more information, especially about voltages and temperatures before you get too carried away with overclocking.

Hope I haven't forgotten something to tell you...

Re: EP45-DS3R Overclocking Problems

You cannot use fine clock ratio unless you use a 6-8 Main CPU mutli, Just so you know.

EasyTune should only be used for looking at things like voltages set and speeds of things, all overclocking should be done in the BIOS. Please read the stickies so you know a bit more about things as well. Then you will know all about those mentioned apps

Please fill this out with what you are using at 3.2 that works, and then post it again with what you are trying for 3.8 that fails and I will try to help you >>>

Please also post your ram's warrantied voltage on the sticker

This is Just a template I use to ask people their settings, pay no attention to the numbers in it, replace with yours

With the below settings the computer would not shut down properly, resulting in me to manually restarting the computer. Upon boot up I was then in a cycle of start/restart with out being able to get to the BIOS. K, try this. Since you can get into windows and not shut down properly is all sound like you are almost there. Hope you are using BIOS profiles to save your settings, this will help you alot! F11 on the MAIN page is save, F12 is Load.

Re: EP45-DS3R Overclocking Problems

Using the settings you provided me with below, the computer was running fine for a day until it failed to shut down properly again recently. Upon manually shutting it down and rebooting it, it went into a rebotting cycle again and I had to jump the board to get into bios again. Loaded the same settings and still the same problem. So I'm currently running fail safe settings.

Is there something I'm missing? Since I have 2 sticks of ram should I be setting the driving strength for both channels?

Re: EP45-DS3R Overclocking Problems

First off, please always use Optimized Defaults if you have to, not fail safe.

Yes, set driving strength the same for both channels, as well as Static tRead Value the same.

Did you test this ram yet one by one with memtest86+? If not you should to be sure you do not have a dying stick in the mix. Please test each stick separately in slot one at stock speeds, timings and manually set voltage >>>

Try this and see if you get anywhere, if so then we can lower things one by one slowely >>>

Improper Shut downs can also be caused general windows or disk errors. You all updated and defragged?

Re: EP45-DS3R Overclocking Problems

I tried the above values and everything ran smooth at 3.6MHz until she didn't want to turn off, which I had to again manually restart, and upon boot up the computer went into a cycle which I had to jump the board to get out of. Prime 95 ran for an hour with no problems either.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Windows works just fine when stock settings are applied, defragged hard drive and everything is good. Memory sticks are 5 5 5 @ 2 2-v per the label on the sticks. Website claims 5 5 5 18 and warranted to 2.15v for 4GB.

So what are you using now? If stock, please post for me your fulll settings, and a image os Memset from windows and I will advise you. You said Auto or stock works but manually does not right? Just want to see memset so I can see what Auto is giving you

Re: EP45-DS3R Overclocking Problems

RMA'd the board today, Gigabyte told me I have a bad board. Went with the refund from NewEgg so now I'm in the market again. Looking to overclock E8400 to 4.0 with 4GB OCZ Reaper ram (PC8500) and GTX 260. First time builder so all of this is new to me. Are there any other boards that would fit my bill. Looking to spend under $200.

Thanks

I would get a GA-P45-DS4/DS4P if it was me, this is what I am using now (Thanks Gigabyte and Mr.Tweak >>>
Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-EP45-DS4P LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards

If you did not like all the BIOS options of the P45, maybe you should get a P35 then. They are great overclockers with much less BIOS settings and will save you some cash as well. If you would like me to find you a EP35-DS4 or DQ6 at a respectable US place let me know, as newegg is out of stock

Re: EP45-DS3R Overclocking Problems

Might not RMA the board anymore because I have it working and stable at 3.8, basically by only setting the CPU Frequency to 423 bumping the RAM voltage to 2.2V, MCH to 400, and setting driving strength to 1066. Everything ran stable then I decided to add the below vales that you gave me as well: timings, voltages, ect. Below is what I am currently running at and it's running stable as well. It seems that the only difference was giving the ram 2.2v (never even had to add voltage to MCH core w/ 4Gb).

Don't think there's a need to RMA the board anymore, but my concern is my current values running at 3.8GHz are not pulling any better 3DMark06 scores than my 3.6 non-stable settings. 15700 w/ GTX 260 and 4Gb's w/ cores running at 53/54* C. Ram timings?

Thanks for the help.
