hello all. im trying to overclock my E8400 E0 using my new EP35-DS3L. ive ran into some stability problems once i try to go past 3.6ghz, or 400x9. i can boot into windows, but stress testing fails at anything above this. here are the settings that work:

CPU Thermal Monitor 2(TM2) ...........: [Disabled]
    CPU EIST Function.........................: [Disabled]

i am at work right now so i cant be 100% sure of these settings, but im confident that my memory serves me well.
my ram is 2x2gb gskill ddr2 800. link.

im thinking that i am being limited by this ram. my goal is 4ghz stable. should i loosen up on the timings? any suggestions are greatly appreciated! :)

    Re: EP35-DS3L Overclocking problems

The usual culprit is CPU voltage. You could put it on Auto to see what the BIOS uses and if stable, start to lower it until unstable and then raise again to a stable voltage.

What are the Advanced Timing settings for the memory??? Is it set at auto or are they set at certain values???

If you read the Overclocking guides they tell you set CPU voltage high or memory timings loose trying to get one set first and then tweak the other. Some like to tweak the memory first and others prefer the CPU first. I am not sure it makes a difference as after each is tweak you should recheck the other.

hey, thanks for those settings i will try them out. and as for a cpu cooler i should have mentioned that. im using the tuniq tower 120. and yes that vcore is a little generous, its more close to 1.325v.

well, i tried the aforementioned settings, and no luck. it boots into windows fine, no BSODs, but its still not stable. i get either rounding errors (ram) or SUM errors (cpu) when stress testing. at 4ghz, i went as high as 1.3625 vcore in bios 1.33vcore in windows, and still no dice.

this is really testing my patience, as i am running out lol. i know this can be done, its just frustrating it seems like ive tried every combination i can think of and still no stability.

right now im back at stock settings. my gut feeling is that im being limited by my ram.

edit: i havent tried loosening up my ram timings, should i see if that helps? what would be a good starting point?

                  Re: EP35-DS3L Overclocking problems

Sometimes too loose on the ram timings fails as well. Have you memtested at all to see if it is the ram, or the CPU?

Try these below, a little tighter but may be the right spot. If this does not work, I would be testing what you have with memtest so you can see if it is the CPU settings/voltage or not. If memtest passes, then you know you need more CPU volts, which is probably the culprit as your timings are loose enough that your ram should be passing

i have not memtested this set of ram before. however, i've been using it in an older rig for a few months without problems, g31m-s2l + e2180 @ 3ghz + ACF7 and the gskill ram. recently got a new ep35-ds3l and an e8400, switch in the same ram. it wouldnt hurt to run memtest anyway, would it.

thanks again... i will try those settings.
