  • EP45-DS3R OC setup help

I just got the EP45-DS3R to complete my new build (see sig for specs).

    More ram details - PDC24G6400ELK 5-5-5-12 2.0v

The board came with the F5e bios so I Q-flashed to the F9 bios.
Then used the settings mxcrowe posted for the DS2L here

    with the exception of;
    vCore - 1.325v
    DRAM Voltage - 2.0v
PCI Express Frequency (Mhz) - 102
PCI Express Clock Drive - 900mV (this was what it was so I left it)

Booted up fine with one stick of ram so I installed Vista Ultimate 64 and the latest drivers from Gigabyte's site (chipset, realtek lan) and Realtek HD drivers (from Realtek site). Then installed the second stick of ram.

So far that's all I've done install wise. No Vista updates, etc.

Then I ran OCCT and it fails after about 10 seconds.
    Prime95 BSOD's with memdump after 2 seconds.

So, where to go from here?

    and a couple questions;

I installed Vista on a 125GB partition and formated the remaining for data.
Would I be better off getting a separate 160GB drive for the OS and use the whole 320GB drive for data (performance wise)?

Also, CPUz shows 2.4 ghz when idle but when OCCT starts it jumps to 3.2 ghz. What did I miss to stop that?

    Re: EP45-DS3R OC setup help

Well, please post me the exact settings you are using below. For your Hard drive question, your 320 os likley faster then a new 160 so you probably wouldnt be better off. Now buying 2 X 250 with 16MB cache and run RAID would be a improvement. 2x250 is $55 apiece, so something to think about

Your OCCT and freq issue, sounds like you did not disable the speedstep. Please take some time and read thru the guides I have pinned, for your board or not they will help you get to know things alot better

This is Just a template I use to ask people their settings, pay no attention to the numbers in it, replace with yours

The Below things need to be disabled for speedstep to be off, which is likely why the settings mxcrowe listed failed for you. And you likely need different settings like manual settings for MCH Core for 2x2GB. Auto is just not the way to go for many reasons, which I tried to explain to him. It is the slowest way to run your system, and often is not stable anyway, especially with 2x2GB of ram and a overclock

      Re: EP45-DS3R OC setup help

      Thanks for the quick reply!

Since I just bought the 320GB what do you think about 2x320GB in raid?

I'll read some more and post the settings when I get home.

      Thanks again.

        Re: EP45-DS3R OC setup help

Yes, that would work great. You will want to get a extra drive as well though for backup which you should always backup anything you cannot loose when you are running a RAID

Ill see you then, Ill be back this afternoon. If not I will get your reply and post back tonight

          Re: EP45-DS3R OC setup help

Okay, got home and the rig is/was unstable as hell. So I loaded the "Optimized Defaults" and ran OCCT for a half an hour with no errors. And memtest is going on it's fifth full pass with no errors.

Probably not any point in posting "default" settings.
But any pointers on getting to 3.2 Ghz (1to1 400MHz) would greatly be appreciated. And yes I'm still reading

            Re: EP45-DS3R OC setup help

Have you tried increasing VCore further? 1.325V in BIOS probably results in less than 1.28V actual under load and is likely simply not enough to run the CPU at 3.2GHz. If you see people posting about how they run the CPU at speed X and VCore Y they're talking about actual VCore in Windows, not the BIOS setting btw. Actual voltage is pretty much always considerably lower than the BIOS setting.

And the jump from 2.4GHz to 3.2GHz is Speedstep (= EIST, which you should at least initially switch off, you can always turn it back on later to see if it the system ist still stabel when it's enabled). Speedstep is a power saving feature which lowers the multiplicator to the lowest value (6) which results in 2.4GHz (6x400). Once there's load on the CPU it swichtes to full speed.

              Re: EP45-DS3R OC setup help

Yeah I "had" "EIST" disabled but maybe the MB didn't like it and turned it back on(??????)
the double/triple reboot thing is strange to me...but I like it for some reason..doh!

                Re: EP45-DS3R OC setup help

First. So you know. A double reboot is normal when making BIOS changes, sometimes certain changes will do it, and other times it will not. But a Double post is normal.

A triple post is not, and means either you did not set high enough voltage to something, or you had a ram timing to tight. The board will triple post and revert back to default settings in that case.

Here is some suggested settings for 3.2 with ram at 800Mhz. As said above you will need to up your vcore more likely to overcome your boards Vdroop. I would start with 1.4-1.45 or so for your 65nm CPU set in the BIOS, and see what that comes out to in windows at idle and load
