  • EP45-DS3L random system hangs....

    Hello

So I have attempted building my own comp for the first time and this are the parts I got new:

    Intel E8400
    Patriot PC2-9200 (5-5-5-12), 2.3v
    EP45-Ds3L flashed to F8 bios
    Sapphire 4850
    Thermaltek 700w psu

From the beginning I had alot of problem trying to install windows first the system would hang, so I tweaked the bios a little bit (never worked with bios that much before, mostly from googling here and there) so I got windows to install, but at random times it would still randomly lock up....

So I took everything apart and reseated everything, making sure everything connects properly, but still no luck.

So I tried memtest86+ and I could not run it through... it just randomly hangs in the beginning 1 min or less.... So I thought it might be memory so I got another pair the Corsair CM2X1024-8500C5D which is listed under gigabyte's web as ones that's supported by the MB... and that didn't run memtest86+ either... i'm now at loss as to what i can do next..... Here's my BIOS settings, if someone can help me out, I would greatly appreciate it... cuase I think i've exhausted my patience and options...

I can help, please tell me what Configuration of ram you are using now. Like which set, and how much is it 2x1 or 2x2. Then I can give you some settings.

For now I will answer your questions, and post a little bit of settings back for you until you get back to me about the ram

DRAM Timing Selectable ................: [AUTO] able to find the correct timing for the ram i have

For the above comments. First off 1066 ram or above is all really 800 ram that is tested to run at a certain speed with certain timings and voltages. Without those voltages set the XMP profiles may not be picked up. And your 1150 ram may or may not have a SPD profile for XMP to even see

Now, I would also suggest a few things there be manually set and not to use the XMP, but I would need to know the ram info I asked above first. But mainly I would suggest something like this for 1066 >>>

    DRAM Performance Control
    Performance Enhance...................: [STANDARD]
    Extreme Memory Profile (X.M.P.).....: Disabled
    (G)MCH Frequency Latch...............: [333]
    System Memory Multiplier ..............: 3.20
    Memory Frequency (Mhz) ..............: 1065
    DRAM Timing Selectable ................: [Manual]

Standard Timing Control (first set for patriot, 2nd for corsair)
    CAS Latency Time........................ 5
    tRCD ......................................... 5
    tRP'........................................... 5

tRFC........................................... 52-62 needed for 2x2GB, this is a must
    tRTP...........................................
    Command Rate (CMD) ....................:2

Static tRead Value.........................:7-10 << what do you see here in the BIOS?

If nothing, please download this and post a screenshot from within windows so I can see what AUTO is giving you for the above value it may be too low >>>

Do not worry about the above ones you do not see until you want to overclock. The you may need to use the Control + F1 hotkey on the MAIN page of the BIOS then go into MIT section this is mentioned in the guides which you should check out if you havent. Or it may not be a BIOS feature for your board

      Re: EP45-DS3L random system hangs....

Thanks Lsd for your reply, both of the RAM i have are 1gig sticks for a total of 2gigs for each type of RAM. Right now I have the sticks at slot 1 and 3. I'll pot you the bios values when i get home tonight.

        Re: EP45-DS3L random system hangs....

OK, thanks. Yeah post back with what you are trying and I will advise. In case I am not around when you do get home here is some ranges for 2x1GB at 1066, set to all the highest suggested and later you can work your way down. Use these with the rest from above and 1.2 MCH Voltage >>>

        Standard Timing Control
        CAS Latency Time........................ 5
        tRCD ......................................... 5
        tRP'........................................... 5
        tRAS.......................................... 12/15

        Advanced Timing Control [Press Enter]
        tRRD...........................................3-4
        tWTR..........................................3-6 (8-12)
        tWR............................................4-8 (10-14)
tRFC........................................... 38-48 (Likely 42 will be good)
        tRTP...........................................3-6
        Command Rate (CMD) ....................:2

        Channel A
        Static tRead Value.........................:7-12

And of course you could have gotten 2 DOA sets of ram, which is not very likely but it can happen. I would advise you test both set, one stick at a time on a different system at stock speeds, timings and voltages. Also, you are using the latest Memtest86+ right 2.01? If not you have to get that as older versions are not compatible with your board >>>>
Memtest86+ is an advanced, free, open-source, stand-alone memory tester for 32- and 64-bit computers (UEFI & BIOS supported)
