  • EP45-DS3L freezes up, BIG TIME

    Hi there.

This is my first Gigabyte board and its starting to get me fustrated. It freezes constantly.

    My system:
    New DS3L board
    New E7200 CPU
    New Corsair TWIN2X4096-6400C5DHX G memory
    New Sapphire HD4850 GFX
Antec true 550w PSU (OK tested)

All fresh out of the box. Memory placed in dual channel mode (slot 1 and 3). During first bootup i noticed that the CPU was not reconnized correctly. Went into BIOS, changed boot order and left the cpu settings alone.
Tryied to install WIN XP. During that, the installation froze twice. Went on the internet were I found that a bios update would fix this. Updated bios to version F7.
Several times during the installation it froze. But after a few restarts, the installation was complete.
Now I have a fresh install of winxp. I then started to set bios correctly. Tryied every memory setting I could find on the net for this memory.
But I still have the freezes. After about 1-3 min. I dies. No BSOD it just stopps.
I have now tryied to run memtest on my new memory, that also freezes up after 30 sec of memtest v.3.4.
I have tryied another GFX no luck. Other memory no luck. Other memslots have been tryied, different order, same result. I changed the CPU setting so its now reconized correctly. Still No luck.....
I am getting desperate here but since this is my 30 system build or so and I never have had a default MB, I recon that its my time for recieving a default MB.
I could just return it, but then again my pride tells me to carry on and not give up with this board.

    Hope for your help Janus.

    Regards,
    Mike

    Mike,
As I'm sure you'll see on this forum, you are not alone. Your initial experience is exactly the same as mine. I can tell you that I did eventually get my system stable, though it took a lot of work, and frankly, I still don't know what made the difference in the end. For sure, make sure you did the BIOS update to F7 correctly, selecting optimal defaults and booting through once before beginning any tweaks. Have you tried running with one stick to see if it stable that way?
    Check this link: http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/post...45-ds3l-27417/
Those settings are stable for me under F7, even with the overclock. You can just set it at 266x9.5 to get the stock 2.53ghz if you wish.
By the way, I concur with you that these boards take much more mucking around than anything I have ever experienced, having put together many machines over the years. On the other hand, this has given me the chance to learn much more about the guts of BIOS than I ever knew before...
    Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3L (BIOS F9); E7200 Core2Duo 2.53Ghz 1066Mhz FSB 3MB L2 (OC to 3.4Ghz); SuperTalent 2x2G DDR2-800 PC6400 CL 5-5-5-12 (T800UX4GC5); Seagate 500GB SATA2 7200 32mb cache HD; EVGA 8800GT 512MB Superclocked Edition
    Ultra X-connect X2 550-watt PSU; Vista x64 SP1 and OpenSUSE 11.0 (KDE 4.1)

      Thanks for the quick reply.
Yes, I have tryied with only one stik of memory. Still frosen.
And yes I have corretcly loaded opimized dettings and booted before tweeking.

So I am kind of lost, even after reading several pages on the internet about this board.

      Thanks again

What settings are you using that is failing? And can you please test the ram one stick at a time (ON another board if you can at stock timings/speeds) with Memtest86+ >>>>

Re: EP45-DS3L freezes up, BIG TIME

I was abel to borrow a 2gig memory stick which I testet at work with the version on Mentest you linked to me. Ram stik is fine. That stik is now placed in slot one.
After a reset of the bios I booted up and entered the bios. I loaded optimized defaults. Saved and booted up. After 2 min the pc froze.
I have now been into the bios for about 90 min, no problems. I have tryied to run a memtest here after that, but that also froze after 1 min.

Ok my bios settings are as follows:

Re: EP45-DS3L freezes up, BIG TIME

What memory are you using with the above settings? I understand you are now using 1 stick, but what is it? I just wanted you to memtest86+ your ram sticks one by one, not borrow some to test in memtest

You confuse me with your Borrow ram statement, but if you are just using borrow ram I would need to know what type, and how much it is to make suggestions to you.

Did you test Your Ram yet?

Try making these changes for the above ram >>>
(G)MCH Frequency Latch...............: [Auto] << Set to 266 or 333

            Channel A & B
            Static tRead Value.........................:auto 6 << Set to 7 or 8

            DRAM
DRAM Voltage ……....1.800V............: auto 1.800 << This should be manually set to the spec on the ram sticker. Not sure which ram you are using so I cannot suggest a setting

666-18 should work on any ram, I think either static tRead is too low or you have another issue

Please let me know how your ram tests in memtest. The please lets get that working not borrowed ram yet

Try making these changes for the above ram and let me know how it works >>>
(G)MCH Frequency Latch...............: [400] Try also 333 with below settings.

                Standard Timing Control
                CAS Latency Time........................5
                tRCD ......................................... 5

                DRAM
DRAM Voltage …….............1.800 For your Corsair sticks, I dont think 1.8 is right. Likely 2.1V Right? You never said yet

Next reply, please fill in the full template again when you post back with the settings you are using/trying and which ram and amount of ram IE: 2x1 or 2x2
