    Re: EP45-DS5 with Corsair TWIN2X8500C5D

So all temperatures are normal: lowering CPU clock ratio won't help, I suppose. This seems to be a problem with RAMs. Any other MB You can check them with?

Not really, but I'll probably just send them back if I can't get stable settings.
I have to admit, it's a pretty good learning experience. Haven't done much in BIOS before this computer build.

@ mv2devnull. Ya, I guess they should say a letter means beta specifically. As it DOES which you know correct? If not you do now.

        @ neshiren

Did you ever look on your ram sticks to see the voltage specified on the sticker? If not you need to for sure.

Try this, I see a few things you did not set which could likely be your issue.

Please also disable Legacy USB Storage Detect in the Integrated Peripherals Page of the BIOS

Update: Stable for 12 hours with following settings (on top of my head, at work now)

To answer your questions, the sticker says 5-5-5-15 2.1V

          I've started a run with
          System Memory Multiplier ..............: 3.20
          Memory Frequency (Mhz) ..............: 1066

I think I can finally start using the computer now and start tweaking the settings lower until it starts to freeze and then tweak it up again.

What settings in the Advanced Timing Control change the performance the most? I'm not doing any benchmarks, but it would be nice to know what the important settings are. I know lower is generally better but is there any of the settings I should concentrate on, as a start?

Also what does these settings do?

            Re: EP45-DS5 with Corsair TWIN2X8500C5D

OK, So it looks like you just had timings to tight. Those loose timings above show that your ram is ok and works fine on that board then

Well first thing I would work on lower is Static tRead Value, try for 7-8. Then slowly work on the rest as you have time

As for the Skews. CPU and MCH also are known as CPU and NB PLL if you see anyone speaking of these anywhere.

I am not exactly sure but I do know that trail and error with them are worth the time. Especially when using a quad. Here is a page I found with some mention to this >>>
Everything you want to know about overclocking with a Gigabyte motherboard - Overclockers Forums

            And >>

I did have a page bookmarked that explained it more in depth (I Kow it is addressed in the Intel Chipset PDF), but I cannot find it in my 100 bookmarks. I will try to find later tonight for you

              Re: EP45-DS5 with Corsair TWIN2X8500C5D

I'm back to the start again..freezed for me with what I thought was stable settings.
I've set them in single channel mode now and will see how that goes.

I'm certain the memory's not damaged as I haven't seen a single error in memtest. I'm considering some other hardware failure.

                Re: EP45-DS5 with Corsair TWIN2X8500C5D

Add a bit more MCH voltage

Those timings are too loose to be failing unless there is not enough voltage going thru something. If you are passing memtest at any setting but system or other tests are failing then you need more CPU voltage likely.

Ahh dont waste your time on single channel, you dont want to use it.

Sounds to me as if possibly your CPU or MCH is just not getting enough. What did you decide to try on those skew settings?

CPU-Z shows CPU core voltage at 1.232
I'll try to add more voltage on MCH and CPU.

So was the above correct then? Memtest86+ passes but system still fails other tests or BSOD or crashes in other ways?

                      Re: EP45-DS5 with Corsair TWIN2X8500C5D

MCH core over 1.2 seems to freeze/reboot at post and I get that "failure after overclock" message in BIOS menu.
I tried downclock cpu and ran a test in OCCT. No problem when choosing CPU test, with only RAM test it freezed after 1 second.
I've contacted the store I bought the memory from, hopefully I can just send them back.
It seems to be hit and miss, sometimes it can run for 12h, but that was only at the settings I posted on the last page (with 5-5-5-18 though)

I've never got a BSOD or anything. Just freezes.

If I can get Mushkin memory, which one would you recommend?
                      the 6400 with 4-4-4-12 or 8500 5-5-5-15? (2x2GB)

Well Mushkins are great. What speeds do you want to run is the question. 1066 ram at 5-5-5-15 will do 4-4-4-12 at 800 as well. So it is up to you really. The 1066 black ones will do more then 1066 at looser timings, the 800 may not do, or do much above 1066 at 555 timings

And do you want 2x2 or 2x1 Not sure if you meant that 2x2 for both timings above?

I am personally waiting to get #996580 which is a 2x2 set. Black is best, Blue is second best, Silver dont get it is budget. Unless that is all you can afford, they do work great as well but just trying to tell you which sets/models are the better of all of them

Then of course they also have the Redlines PC2800, which are great as well

2x2 GB for both. I'll probably go for the black series, they're the same price as the Corsair dominator.
Found a store nearby that's got black 8500 and redline 8000 in stock.
I just want to make sure there's not anything else that causes the freezing and changing the memory is a good start..

Yeah the 996580 is 6400's. Out of stock where I shop as well.

Good luck on deciding. I made myself wait, I WILL get the 996580's once they are instock and I have the cash at the same time.... Which does not happen often!

I'm being paranoid, do you think the 8500 causes the problems? Afaik they're just overclocked 6400's? Maybe it's more stable with 6400.

                              Nevermind, I'm just paranoid hehe
