    GA-EP45-DS3L troubles

    Hi,

    My old rig was xp 2500+ on an abit nf7-s with 1g ddr 400, XP pro. 5 years, time for upgrade.

    Having major problems with this build:

    GA-EP45-DS3L
    E8400
    G.Skill 2x2GB 1066 5-5-5-15 2.0-2.1v
    Thermaltake 700w
    Vista Ultimate full retail (64 bit is the goal)
    WD 400gb sata 3gb
    Ugh, my troubles are legion. Board shipped with f3, after massive fails of every kind (BSOD, IRQL_LEss_Than etc) i flashed to f8.

    2 sticks is a no-go, 1 stick works in slot 2.

    ive tried all the MIT tweaks u suggested, nothing works

    dram voltage set to 1.8 default, PC health shows 1.9086 or something.
    auto Spd sets it at 5-7-7-20

    my dvd is IDE, my hdd is in sata 0 but it shows as master of ide channel 0.

    Gigabyte GA-P45-DS3L (BIOS F7)
    E7200 Core2Duo 2.53Ghz 1066Mhz FSB 3MB L2 (OC to 3.2Ghz)

    I just noticed you have F8 Bios...thanks for that...I didn't know it was out.
    I had a lot of problems getting my system stable, mostly seemed to be associated with memory. I could get stability with one DIMM, but not both. Then it worked ok for a while with both sticks in banks 1 & 2 (not dual channel). Finally, I got things ironed out where I am back to dual channel (banks 1 & 3) and everything is very stable, except when resuming from S3 standby (see thread on this forum).

    I think you just need to get the settings dialed in properly to your BIOS and you'll be ok. For sure, bump your dram voltage to 2.1v as per spec on your memory.

      thanks, i ended up rma'ing the thing. Simply too much hassle for me, when i put all the proper timings/ voltages, it would still BSOD, reboot loops. happens. i guess i'm just lucky.

      Any thoughts from anyone on a better/reliable board?

      My abit nf7-s never gave me a lick of trouble, it would still be going if i didnt tear it out to build again.

        That's a shame, because we probably could have got it working. I certainly understand though, as I came very close to RMAing my board. Glad I kept it, because this system absolutely screams and was very good value in every component. If I were building a new system today, I'd be looking at this:

        Asus P5Q-E Green Motherboard - Intel P45, Socket 775, ATX, Audio, PCI Express 2.0, S/PDIF, Dual Gigabit LAN, Firewire, USB 2.0, eSATA, RAID
        Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3L (BIOS F9); E7200 Core2Duo 2.53Ghz 1066Mhz FSB 3MB L2 (OC to 3.4Ghz); SuperTalent 2x2G DDR2-800 PC6400 CL 5-5-5-12 (T800UX4GC5); Seagate 500GB SATA2 7200 32mb cache HD; EVGA 8800GT 512MB Superclocked Edition

          I ended up going with this:

          Foxconn P45A-S LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

          Similar to that asus, hope it works.

          I kept the gigabyte 4850 though

            Looks like a pretty similar board spec-wise to the P45-DS3L. Let us know how things go with this one.

              Abit is what I would have got if Gigabyte was not a option. Asus's Great days are way in the past IMO

              And yes, sorry to hear you RMA'd so quickly. I'm sure I could have got you fixed up easily unless something was physically wrong with your board. Which very well could be the case... With any brand

              Your main issue I see if the settings you mention where being used is just that. Those will nto work with 2x2GB.

              You should be manually setting things for sure. These below would be the main things for sure needed to be manually set for 2x2GB

              Good luck with your new board, and you will need the same things set in it as well, though they may be worded a bit differently

              Performance Enhance.......... [Standard]
              XMP ............. [Disabled]

              5-5-5-12/15 of course

              Then you would need tRFC of 52-62 Manually set as well

              Static tRead 7-10

              Mch Core voltage increase by +.2 or more

              DDR2 Voltage Manually set to 2.1V

              SATA will show as PATA or IDE in many boards/bios's

              SATA is just a extension of IDE and then of course it likely just is actually called that because of translations. As long as there is NO jumper on the back of your SATA II disk then it is running in Sata Mode at the max transfer rate (UDMA 8 Theoretically) of your board
