Bluescreen loop

Hi Guys,

Recently I built a new system with a Gigabyte EP45-DS4P and I seem to be getting a bluescreen every time I shoutdown/ restart using Vista 32b or 64b. This is happening more times then not. Out of every 10 powerups or restarts I might get a normal startup process. The error that I am getting says something about ATIKMDAG.SYS and it goes through a mini dump. I have tried updating the graphis driver with no success, which leads me to belive it is something with the board?
Currently I have had to revert back to XP which doesn't have any of the above symptoms.

The build specs are:

Gigabyte EP45-DS4P
Intel CORE2QUAD Q6600
Gskill 2 x 2GB DDR2
Western Digital 500GB Sata
Connect 3D HD4850

Can someone shed some light on this problem?

It sounds to me like a ATI driver, they all have issues Nvidia as well. Especially with vista. What you should do is use a older ATI driver.

If you need to know where to find older ones let me know and I will post a link. I am always about 3-5 versions behind for this very reason. Although I am using 8.6 right now with no issues though. But I only installed to test the Avivo Converter for someone.

Do you have the latest Intel Chipset drivers installed? Just checking.

Are you using a Beta BIOS?

What settings are yu using in the MIT section? (Just so I can be sure it is not a incorrect setting possibly) >>>>

Hi,

Thank you for the advice.

My BIOS has not been updated since the unit was put together. I will install the latest BIOS update when I get home. (Not the Beta version)
Also the chipset has not been updated.

The unit was put together by a friend here at work and according to him no updates had been done, so this maybe part of the issue.

Once I do the update and reinstall Vista at some stage I will post the outcome.

Ahh! Well if you do update the BIOS DO NOT USE @BIOS. Please use Qflash with a floppy or a USB Stick, or make a FAT32 Partition on your disk and put the BIOS files there.

You will need to install vista first, then install the chipset drivers for it to help. But you would also likely want to install them in XP as well since you are using it now. Be sure you do grab both versions if you plan to update vista later since they are different for each system

Hi,

So I updated my BIOS last night. Turns out the version I had was F2, so I upgraded to F5. As for the Intel chipset utility, I downloaded it, but it failed to read my chipset or anything else it was supposed to be able to do. Would this be an error with Windows or should I just reinstall the chipset drivers off the CD that came with the motherboard?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

Hey, forgot to say... Love the Screen Name! I wish they would make another movie of that! It has been one of my Fav's since the 80's

Which did you download? You should be downloading the file that is named "infinst_autol.exe" And double click that and it will run and install all needed drivers.

Are you getting a error with that, or did you download a different file? If you did get a different one, grab the one named specifically that. If you get a error please post a screenshot so I can see what you mean

You can install them off your CD, but they are likely WAY old, best to get the newer ones

Hey, that eBay link says the item has been removed damit lol. Perhaps I could go back to the future and bid on it haha. Yeah poor joke I know lol

Now for the good news. Last night I put Vista 32bit back on and so far I have not had one BSOD (knock on wood). Also the latest ATI Catalyst suite with no issues. I am guessing it was the BIOS update that fixed the problem. Furthermore, I have shutdown and restarted at least 7 times and have not seen the good old BSOD lol.

So thank you for all the help and direction.

P.S. I have also installed the latest chipset drivers.

Hi all,

I know this thread is dead but I thought I'd add my bit for what it's worth.

I spent hours searching the net for a BSOD caused by atikmdag.sys. I uninstalled all the drivers, cleaned the registry, updated chipset drivers etc etc etc

Turned out it's problem fixed by version F6 of the BIOS for my board GA-EP45-DS5. It's listed as 'fix for VGA compatability'. There have been quite a few people with nVidia cards having the same problem with a BSOD caused by nvlddmkm.sys.

I've flashed the BIOS to F11 and all is well now, yay!

It even fixed a slight annoyance where the BIOS wouldn't recognise my USB keyboard on a cold boot, only on a restart. That works fine now, double yay!

BTW, why not use the @BIOS? I used it (didn't see this thread before I did) and it seemed fine
