  • problem with memory voltage on EP45-DS3R

    Hi,
    I have a GIGABYTE board EP45-DS3R Bios F7
    I have 2 X 2GB of GSkill DDR2-800 PK that should run at 2.1V 4-4-4-12

I've changed in the BIOS the memory voltage to 2.1V and the timings to 4-4-4-12
when I reboot and go back to the bios, I get a message: THE SYSTEM HAS EXPERIANCED BOOT FAILURES BECAUSE OF OVERCLOCKING OR CHANGE TO VOLTAGE
and while the volatage values remain as I set them, the old value are used and I get 1.88V and 5-5-5-15 timing (as can be seen in PC HEALTH or in CPU-Z)

I did not do OC for the CPU.

    I tried the following:
    * one stick (each of them) - works fine with 2.1V
    * two sticks in different channels (not dual) - works fine with 2.1V
    * two sticks in dual channel - post fails and go back to 1.88V - works fine with 1.88V

I tried both channels, and no go.

    any ideas?

    Thanks

Re: problem with memory voltage on EP45-DS3R

For 2x2GB you need to at least manually set Refresh to Act to 52-62 and you also need to add some +.1 or .15 MCH voltage

After doing that 444-12 should work for you, in dual channel mode as long as you do not have your memory multiplier set to high

Re: problem with memory voltage on EP45-DS3R

Thanks for the super quick reply.
But, I'll need some more help, as Im not familiar with those parameters.
where exactly do I find them?
(I saw parameters called: MCH Core, MCH Reference and MCH/DRAM Reference - which one is it?
and can't find/understand the "set Refresh to Act to 52-62" )

      sorry... and thanks again.

Re: problem with memory voltage on EP45-DS3R

        No Problem

You want to add a bit to MCH core, like if it is 1.1 try 1.2 or 1.25

Refresh to act Is likely called tRfc it will be in the MIT section should be below your main 444-12 area. You wont be able to manually set it until you set DRAM Timing Selectable_______ SPD __ to >>> [Manual]

Re: problem with memory voltage on EP45-DS3R

I changed the MCH core to 1.2 (from 1.1) and also to 1.24
the tRfc was 52 on auto (and I also tried 58)
still loops 2-3 boots w/o posting and when I it gets back to the bios its the 1.88V

Re: problem with memory voltage on EP45-DS3R

Try 62 for tRfc and 1.3 for MCH

Are you only trying 800MHz right now? If so, try it with 555-15 for now until we can figure this out

Re: problem with memory voltage on EP45-DS3R

yes, I'm trying 800MHZ - no OC or anything. followed memory specs.
After it fails at 4-4-4-12 2.1V is seems work fine at lower voltage and timings, as when I boot to Vista cpu-z/et6 show 1.8V 5-5-5-15 timings
and the (not aggresive) stability tests I've done (memtest82, Everest) had no problems.

I'll try 62/1.3 and report back soon.

              Thanks.

tried 62 for tRfc and 1.3 for MCH - same as before (repeated boots and finally posts with 1.88v)

Re: problem with memory voltage on EP45-DS3R

Ok, did you previously have a older CPU in there? What BIOS version is loaded in there, you can see by hitting F9 on the MAIN page of the BIOS

What CPU are your using? A double or triple boot means something is not correct in settings is all

Is your NB too hot to touch after running memtest86+ for more them 10 minutes? Can you touch and hold it for more then 10 seconds?

Also can you please post back to me your full settings you are using now, and what slots you have the ram in. If there is extra settings leave it out>>>

Ok, first off if your NB is too hot to touch without running memtest even then you NEED a fan on it, or you need to remove it and redo the paste under there. There is usually too much, or too little paste with too much or too little coverage. I would suggest if you have some extra cash $20 to get a Extreme Spirit II NB heatsink. If you cannot touch it with or without running memtest for more then 10 sec, then it is way too hot.

If you do not want to buy a new cooler, I would suggest you redo the paste with some NON conductive paste. If you do not want to do that, then I highly suggest you buy a 40mm fan and put on top of it

Re: problem with memory voltage on EP45-DS3R

just to make sure about the NB. I'm touching the NB cooling which is pretty hot . is there any sensor on it so i can check how how it is via software?

                            here are the missing values:
Limit CPUID Max. to 3.....................: Disabled
                            No-Execute Memory Protect............: Enabled
                            CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E)................: Enabled]
                            C2/C2E State Support....................: Disabled]
                            x C4/C4E State Support..................: Disabled]
CPU Thermal Monitor 2(TM2) ...........: Enabled]
                            CPU EIST Function.........................: Enabled]
                            Virtualization Technology................: Enabled]

I'll try the values you suggested soon.

Re: problem with memory voltage on EP45-DS3R

                              tried:
                              tRFC...........................................: 52 [52] <<< Try 62
                              Command Rate (CMD) ....................: 2
                              Channel A +B
                              Static tRead Value.........................:Set to 8 -10 manually

                              not working.

how do I set all the values I change back to be Auto ?
                              Should I re-load optimized defaults?
