  • why can't i hook up 2 dvdr drives?

For some reason I cant get 2 dvdr drives to read a decent speed on my x48-dq6. Doesn't matter if they're sata or ata. I can only seem to get one to work at normal speed and any additional dvdr i put at any path (firewire, usb2 isata) I get 2x as opposed to 20x.

Is it because I have a raided set of HDDs on both raid chipsets? I'm assuming these are jmicron and intel.

2x is pretty bad, you sure your drives are ok? I would guess so since you are testing different ones. What is the CD/DVD you are testing with? That is what actually sets the read/write speeds

I've seriously tried it all. Every combination possible. SATA DVD, IDE DVD, external USB enclosures with IDE DVD.

On both the Intel and GSATA (jMicron) chipsets. Even one at a time with and without the other being enabled within BIOS. 3 different modes possible (IDE, AHCI and RAID).

      I have 3 different drives: NEC 8550 (IDE) 18x, NEC 8520 (IDE) 18x... and a new LG GH20LS10 (SATA) 20x

Oops, I failed to see that earlier.

I'm test ripping with two programs. DVD Decrypter for DVDs and Audio Grabber for audio CDs.

Same results irregardless of genre of aforementioned discs. I test with the identical same disc for either units.

Hmm very strange. Can you test the disks, and drives on a different PC, or system if you are using Vista can you try XP.

Do you have Intel inf Installer installed?

I noticed you said RIP, have you tested their burn speed to see if it is ok? I say that because ripping is going to be slower for sure then reading or burning

Make sure the IDE controller transfer mode is set to DMA not PIO.
I had a similar issue a couple of years back and that was the problem.

I'll give that a try. By the way, did I mention I even tried SATA II ePCI controller card to no avail either?!

Thanks for the info as always. I reinstalled the aforementioned drivers to no avail.

Strangely at BIOS boot I get what appears to be an error during the loading of:

Serial ATA AHCI BIOS Version 15RC 1.07 08042006
This version only supports hard disk and CD rom drivers
                    .

then a listing of the devices connected...

                    then the puzzling:

                    AHCI BIOS not installed.

????? any ideas? or is this normal protocol?

Sounds like either you installed the wrong AHCI driver or you have it configured wrong in the BIOS, or did not install the driver with the OS which you need to do
