  • Remove heatsinks from Ripjaws X

I am building a new machine. I have 16GB of Ripjaws X I want to reuse. The heatsink I want to use will simply not work with RAM that has anything sticking up.

Is there a safe way to remove the heatsink from the memory stick so I can use it?

SEE POST 12 - Ripjaws fit.

Do a Google web search using: ripjaws x remove heat spreader OR heatsink

Can you tell me what the height of the top of the RAM stick above the motherboard surface will be with the spreaders removed? Assuming a normal socket. I have seen discussions that maybe Ares fits, but I don't want to buy a whole new set.

        Hi,

We are strongly recommend not to doing that, because once the heatspearders been removed, the life-time warranty will be void...

If you need the lower height of memory kit, please considering about our Ares series!

please return the ripjaws X and get the Ares instead of remove the heatspearder.

Thanks for the advice, but I have had the RAM for a couple of years. Newegg won't take them back at this point. If I just bought a new set, I would no longer use the ones I have so even if they failed and I had to buy a new set I would pretty much break even.

Can you tell me what the height above the board or their height compared to Ares would be? I will know if it is possible to fit them in even if I take the heat spreaders off.

Re: Remove heatsinks from Ripjaws X

            Hi,

When the memory install on the board with heatspearder, the height for RipjawsX: 3.6~3.7cm/Ares: 2.7~2.8cm

If you install without heatspearder, the height of the memory is about 2.6~2.7cm

Let us know if you need more information about it!!

Re: Remove heatsinks from Ripjaws X

I wouldn't attempt pulling those heatspreaders. In my experience you end up damaging the sticks with the ram popping right off the PCB.If you are trying to fit these sticks under a tower type CPU cooler you could modify the cooler to accept the height of the ram.

Honestly I don't think your response was necessary at all. To be honest I have altered more heatsinks than you have ever owned or ever will own, so im not sure where your comment is coming from. Telling me I don't understand something when you have no clue who I am is disrespectful and doesn't really welcome members to these forums.

Re: Remove heatsinks from Ripjaws X

FYI update - Ripjaws X seem to fit. I worked from drawings I found on the manufacturers site and felt that the RAM would fit with some space to spare. Exchanged a couple of posts with them. They gave me pictures with RAM in-place and a couple of measurements. That supported what I had done by myself. The reviews saying there can be nothing but low profile RAM are not correct. With Ripjaws, there should be about 1cm of extra space left. The Ripjaws are 40mm.
