  • Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z Not detecting GPU

    Hey guys,

i just put my new Crosshair V Formula - z into my pc, arrived this morning, only to discover that it wont detect my Sapphire R9 270x. i dug out a legacy Matrox card and that worked fine. i managed to update the bios to the latest version but still no joy with the 270x however. i tried the 270x in all the PCIe x16 slots which didnt work but i know the card works due to just trying it in my other system. when having both the matrox and the 270x in the mobo, it detects the matrox but the bios doesnt even register that anything is in the pci slot where the 270x is.

Long story short, all PCIe slots seem to work,
    270x works
everything is seated properly because its all clicked in with the pci clips at the end.
    Bios wont detect 270x
    Bios is on latest version

Am i missing something or what?

Any help will be appreciated :)

    Cheers,
    Josh

    Welcome to the forum.

Your problem might be with your power supply or the 6-pin power cable(s) that need to be connected to your video card.

Can you test your system with a different power supply?

We need detailed information about ALL OF THE HARDWARE in your system.

We can best help you after you create a detailed hardware list in the System Specs
portion of your forum profile at the bottom of the profile page or in your forum signature.
Be sure to include brand names and model numbers.
When you are done editing or creating your hardware list, save the settings.

Re: Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z Not detecting GPU

      Thanks for the reply!

I have updated my Sig so my build should be there now... (let me know if I've been stupid and missed anything useful)

Also, I highly doubt it's the psu as it was working with my old mobo about 30 mins before I put the new mobo in. The psu is also only about 6 months old. I have tried re-seating the 6 pin cables on the card however and that didn't work. You'll notice in my Sig I also have a 7870, this also doesn't show up like the 270x.

      Cheers again,

      Josh

Re: Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z Not detecting GPU

        You're welcome.

In other forum threads, there used to be frequent problems with higher end video cards not being recognized and it often took an updated motherboard bios to get the cards recognized. I don't know if this might also apply to Asus motherboards. I would think that your XFX 7870 Black edition video card would not have this problem.

Your psu probably has 4 or 6 pci-e 6-pin cables. Test with these other cables.

It's possible that your psu is to blame, this is why I suggest testing with a different power supply.

Your video card works in your other system, but that system is using a different power supply.

Another option is to test your system with the motherboard removed from your computer case to see if this makes a difference.

Other than not including the model number for your memory ("cheap stuff" doesn't quite cut it), your system profile is fine.

Re: Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z Not detecting GPU

I have updated the motherboard bios to the latest version already but it made no difference.

The psu has several 6+2 pin cables of which I've tried in different combinations across the psu and the 2 GPU's. I shall dig my old power supply out later on then when I get a chance, but if it works I'll eat a matrox card :') and I will add a ram model when I can but they have no stickers on them, and the bios doesn't show a model number so I can't actually find their model number atm. Out of interest, shouldn't the motherboard still detect the gpu if it was a secondary but it just wouldn't run properly if the 6 pin PCIe power wasn't there? I'm sure my old mobo still detected it. But I could be wrong. Either way, I'll still give a different psu a shot.

Re: Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z Not detecting GPU

FWIW, I've seen many strange problems caused by a failing power supply that appears to be working.

It can be tedious swapping out different hardware components to find out where the problem is.

Testing your hardware with the motherboard outside of the case sometimes help to narrow down the problem, usually as a last resort when all else fails.

If you run Cpu-z and save a report as a text file, you will find a lot of useful information, including detailed information about each of your memory modules.

Re: Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z Not detecting GPU

It would appear that it was my fault indirectly through the psu Haha, basically when I was unplugging it all, I realised that one of the PCIe cables was ever so slightly off at the psu end. So I reseated it and now it all seems to work. I guess I need to go and eat a matrox card now...

Cheers for all your help anyway :)

Re: Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z Not detecting GPU

Glad to hear that you found the problem.

Cable/wire connections and hardware that isn't properly seated are common causes of problems.

I hope that your matrox card snack is tasty and doesn't give you indigestion.

                Thanks for the update.

ps: I'm not always right but I'm never wrong.
