Intel(R) 9 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller - 8C82
Intel(R) 9 Series Chipset Family SMBus Host Controller - 8CA2
I have an asrock z97 extreme6 mobo. asrocks site is total trash, unless you bought their most current products they leave everyone on their own to figure it out.

    thanks,

Re: what does it mean when "driver update progs all say"

All motherboard manufactors update their consumer product driver page only for a short period of time. If you allways want the newest drivers available then you must take care for yourself. But a newer driver is not necessarily always faster and better.

So, your readings are from device manager, right?

If you have the device id at the end of the driver name (8C82, 8CA2, ... ), then you have the Intel INF driver installed. But the INF driver is not really a driver (means no executable code inside a .sys file), but only a text file, which tells the OS, ok there is a device with id 8CA2. It is a SMBus device, install the built-in Windows 7 driver for it. That means there is no need to update this INF "driver" to the newest version. Detailed infos about the nature of Intels INF driver can be found here:

A device id at the end of the SATA controller tells you, that there is no specific Intel SATA driver installed. This device is running the built-in Windows 7 msahci.sys driver. This one works very stable, but doesn't get the most performance. Take a look at this Specific: Intel AHCI/RAID Drivers. There you will find detailed information about witch Intel SATA driver is best for a certain chip set and benchmarks too.
