I'm holding my breath waiting to see if the Windows Vista procedure fixes the speaker problem.

Re: ASRock 4CoreDual-SATA2 R2.0 and X-530 Surround Sound Speaker Problem

I never use windows to update my bios!!
I've seen too many problems and/or bricked motherboards when flashing the bios in windows.

Will updating your bios fix your speaker problem? Maybe, maybe not.
My best guess? Flashing with a newer bios version probably will not help with the speaker problem.
The description field on the bios web page is not a comprehensive list.

Right now we don't know which ASRock bios version you have installed and running in your system.

Flashing your bios is often risky, I hope you know what you are doing.

I usually flash with the most recent, non-windows bios version, but I've seen some posts with many new motherboards where you must first flash with a specific intermediary bios before you update to some of the newest bios versions.

Make sure that read and follow the flashing instructions on the bios download web page by clicking on the the red cross icon.

Click on this icon/link and you will see the following information for using the DOS bios flashing instructions: ASRock - BIOS Upgrade Instructions for DOS

Re: ASRock 4CoreDual-SATA2 R2.0 and X-530 Surround Sound Speaker Problem

I think the OP already has the latest BIOS version in his board. This is from his AIDA64 information list:

        BIOS Type AMI (09/22/09)
        ...
DMI BIOS Vendor American Megatrends Inc.
        DMI BIOS Version P2.20

The OP's board BIOS download page:

Otherwise, quite a coincidence if this is not the BIOS version in the OP's board. Also a shame we are wasting our time explaining BIOS updates when the version on the board could be found so easily.

Re: ASRock 4CoreDual-SATA2 R2.0 and X-530 Surround Sound Speaker Problem

The Windows Vista procedure (in post #7) from the motherboard user manual might fix the problem.

Win7 and Vista are similar in many ways.

The fact that your speakers worked with your Gigabyte motherboard has nothing to do with the differences in your 4CoreDual-SATA2 R2.0 setup.
Try it, you have nothing to lose.

Re: ASRock 4CoreDual-SATA2 R2.0 and X-530 Surround Sound Speaker Problem

I have had a similar board for years and still love it, even if it is mothballed at the moment. I recommend this thread on these special hybrid AGP-PCIe boards on Anandtech. It is a long thread now, but you should first check to see if you have the best BIOS (look for a modded BIOS from pc-treiber.net in the thread; these are better and newer than those from ASRock on this particular series). After updating, make sure you are using the best BIOS settings. You then need to recheck Windows to see if all of the proper and latest drivers are installed, which are not those found on the ASRock site, but on each component manufacturer site. If you want to detect for the latest drivers, most tools you will find on the net are full of viruses or are not free; I recommend at least getting a read-out from this tool, driver-identifier, which checks your system and opens a browser page with a list. You can use the drivers on the site directly, or use the list to see which things need updating and go directly to the source to update each. Once this is all done, if the speakers are not working properly, you either have a bad Windows install and should do a fresh one, or simply the speakers are not connected properly. I'd be surprised if the Realtek sound chip has gone bad, but if so, there is always the option of a PCI sound card.

The thread on Anandtech is long and full of data. Well worth reading.

Prepare a simple headphone (e.g. those packed with mobile phones), connect it to green, black and orange (not pink!) sockets one by one, and each time press the play button as you shown in post #6 area 2. If during playback you hear something from left/right, that channel is working well and the problem is from your speaker system or its cables/connectors; Else, open windows volume control, check that no device (rear, center, side,...) is muted or at zero level. (That was very nice in windows xp but is somehow complicated in vista family). You can also use Realtek's own mixer.
