    Z77 Extreme6 - Is it possible to connect a 9th SATA device?

    I have the Z77 Extreme6, which comes with 8 SATA sockets, all of which are connected:

    SATA3_A1: 2TB Seagate Barracuda (SATA 3.0)
    SATA3_A2: Reserved for eSATA device
    SATA3_0, 3_1: Two 500GB Seagate Momentus XT Hybrids (SATA 3.0)
    SATA2_2, 2_3: Two 500GB Momentus XT Hybrids (SATA 2.0)
    SATA2_4, 2_5: Blu-ray burner, DVD burner

    Is there a theoretical way to connect another SATA device (not that it matters that much to me), even though I have used up all the SATA sockets on the motherboard?

    Not without buying an add-in PCI(-e) sata controller card.
    #1 - Please, when seeking help, enter the make and model of ALL parts that your system is comprised of in your Signature, or at least the model #'s in your System Specs, then "Save' it.

    #2 - Consider your PSU to be the foundation from which all else is built upon. Anything built upon a weak foundation is poorly built.

        Just reading your post again - I have no experience using the add on SSD's you mention.

        For normal add on SATA card I would say anything not ASMedia, etc. I have a thread here where I was trying to add extra SATA ports and a SATA II using Silicon Graphics drivers was MUCH better than anything with other 3rd party drives SATA III. Let me look for it.

        I think Parsec gave me the guidance - I still have the card (no longer in use I upgraded the MB) but its 2x external SATA II which would not suit you.

          Your board won't be able to boot from an add-on SATA card. You must exchange your new boot drive to one of your optical/storage drives connected to native ports.

            In other words, I must move my DVD burner (plugged into SATA2_5) to the PCIE SATA controller card, and plug my SSD into one of the SATA sockets on my motherboard, yes?

            Would it be possible for me to move my 2TB Master Backup drive (plugged into SATA3_A1) to the PCIE card, and use that socket for my SSD? Or better yet, abandon the eSATA socket (which hardly has any use these days thanks to USB 3.0), and plug my SSD into SATA3_A2?

              The second choice is preferred as you may need your DVD drive for booting and OS installing.
              Also note that usually the eSATA is bootable as well as other native ports.

                  Which is why I intend to abandon the eSATA port in order to use SATA3_A2 with my SSD. That is, assuming Microsoft will allow us to install my reserved Win10 to another (empty) drive, rather than overwrite my Win7 as an upgrade.
