775i65G Max RAM

This MB has only 2 DDR2 RAM sockets. The official motherboard spec says maximum memory is 2 GB, however the chipset (Intel 865G) lists maximum RAM support as 4 GB. Wondering if I could install 2 GB memory modules instead of the standard 1 GB modules. FWIW, I know that 4 GB will only register as 3.5 GB. I'm just looking to max out the system before I have to replace it.
