  • The ASrock FM2A88X Extreme6+ Memory list is useless.

I'm looking at buying one of these board and I really want the option of 16MB's of 2133Mhz (i.e. buy 2x4GB then later another 2x4G).
At the moment I'm looking at having to suck it and see, which I can not afford if it doesn't work out.

    ASRock > FM2A88X Extreme6+

It is not for the Kaveri APU. The Kaveri has a different DRAM controller that officially supports 2133Mhz without overclocking.

It has lots of 1GB and under DIMMS and <1600Mhz DIMMS that nobody cares about. Anyone building a system today should either be getting at least 8GB or be planning to expand to it.

ASRock need to test lot more DIMMS especially 4MB+ ones.

It would be great if they could at least match the ASUS A88X-Pro list which is explicitly for Kaveri
    Motherboards - A88X-PRO

Can anyone tell me if any of these work for getting to 16Gbs?
    G.SKILL F3-17000CL9D-8GBXM,
    Corsair CMD8GX3M2B2133C9,
    GEIL GPB316GB2133C10ADC,
    GEIL GPB38GB2400C11BDC,
    G.SKILL F3-2400C10D-8GTX

I'd prefer double sided (dual rank) ram as this has been shown to be 25% faster that Single sided DIMMS.

    G.SKILL - RAM Configurator
#1 - Please, when seeking help, enter the make and model of ALL parts that your system is comprised of in your Signature, or at least the model #'s in your System Specs, then "Save' it.
____If you are overclocking, underclocking, or undervolting any parts, informing us of this and their values would prove beneficial in helping you.

      Thanks this is great!

So no options with G.Skill for 4Gbx4 :(

But at least I know I can buy the board and later get to 16GB of 2133Mhz memory.

This doesn't however excuse the ASRock memory list. They could at least link to the g.skill RAM configurator

The G.Skill site doesn't seem to indicate which DIMMS are dual rank (which usually means double sided).

Re: The ASrock FM2A88X Extreme6+ Memory list is useless.

Most memory manufacturers have a similar online tool that will list memory kits that they have tested with specific motherboard models.
You might need to contact their online tech support to get additional information about specific memory kits.

Keep in mind that buying a second "identical" memory kit in the future doesn't guarantee full compatibility, even if the new kit has the same model number, it might use different chips that might not play nice with your original memory kit. You have a better chance of success when buying two identical kits at the same time because they probably come from the same batch. Buying a compatible single 4x4GB kit is the safest way to go if you want to avoid possible problems in the future.

I'd prefer double sided (dual rank) ram as this has been shown to be 25% faster that Single sided DIMMS.
Does this apply to current DDR3 memory kits?
Can you provide links that "prove" that dual rank ram is 25% faster than single rank ram?

Sorry its ~7% I was wrong. I was thinking of something else.
          Anyway use Google Translate with
AMDs Kaveri und der Speicher - ComputerBase

There is a forum link on that page where people are maintaining a list of dual ranked memory
          For G.skill it says
          "G.Skill
          Rule:
"Dual sided" memory modules and 8GB of G.Skill bars seem to be dual rank per se."

Re: The ASrock FM2A88X Extreme6+ Memory list is useless.

Sorry, OP, I am going to have to disagree with you on a couple of points, mainly because people (who are not as computer literate as you appear to be) read these and could be misled by your comments.

The AsRock FM2A88X Extreme6+ motherboard IS designed for use with Kaveri processors. If you don't believe me, try plugging an FM2+ (Kaveri) processor in a non-FM2+ board. It won't work, whereas plugging an FM2+ (Kaveri) processor into the FM2A88X Extreme6+ works just fine. The Extreme6+ (and all the other FM2+ boards I have looked at so far) are backwards compatible with FM2 (pre-Kaveri) processors.

Your reference to the ASUS motherboard has the same listings. Using your own link, I found a RAM QVL listing for "Richland-Trinity" processors (i.e. FM2, not FM2+) so it is not "explicitly for Kaveri" as you have claimed.

The last issue I had was your comment about sub-1600 RAM. Not everybody wants this motherboard for gaming (for example, I am buying one next week because I like the amount of USB 3.0 inputs, the amount of video outputs (four if I use a Kaveri APU), and NOT because I want it to do uber things). For the purposes I want it, 4Gb of 1333 RAM would be fine. I am getting better than that, but I don't need to, nor would some other people.

Going back to the title of your original post, just looking at one of the RAM sets that (again, using your own link) AsRock says are compatible with the Extreme6+, you get to the Ripjaws X memory which is rated at 2133. I didn't see anything on that page or any of the other pages there, such as the specifications (although I could have missed it) that says the RAM is already overclocked to 2133, just that it is tested to 2200. I take that to mean it is designed to operate at 2133, and given it is 4 x 4Gb sticks, it meets your other requirements as well.

How then is the Memory list useless, when it correctly lists 2133 RAM that is compatible AND meets your stated requirements?

No personal offense meant by any of the above.

I wasn't saying the FM2A88X Extreme6+ does not support Kaveri processors.
The DRAM controller for the ram is on the APU not the motherboard.
So they have to give seperate memory QVL lists depending on the APU plugged into the motherboard.

If you actually look at the Memory support page they have
              Memory_QVL_List_for_Richland_Trinity_CPU
              and
              Memory_QVL_List_for_Kaveri_CPU
i.e a list that is "explicitly for Kaveri" and a list that is explicitly for Richland and Trinity.

Separate list depending on the APU...

That's fine but they have a huge number of <1GB and slow DIMMS on the list and very few >1600 Mhz >1GB ones
              Please open http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/...Kaveri_CPU.pdf
and look at the number of DIMMS > 1600GHz and >1GB

I'm not convinced that they, ASROCK, have actually tested their memory list with a Kaveri.
Note the v in the OC column 2133Mhz isn't an overclock for Kaveri yet all of that memory has v next to it

Try googling "F3-17600CL9Q-16GBXLD site:.au" and tell me where I can buy this in Australia.

              In fact just google "F3-17600CL9Q-16GBXLD"
              Newegg - OUT OF STOCK.
              Amazon UK - Currently unavailable.
Amazon US - Your search "F3-17600CL9Q-16GBXLD" did not match any products.

              Anyway...
The vendor that I am looking to buy the APU and motherboard from also sells G.Skill F3-17000CL9D-8GBXM which is on the G.Skill Ram Configurator. I will need to throw this memory away when I upgrade to 16Gb.
It is a pity the RAM Configurator doesn't list 2400Mhz and I have no way of knowing if G.Skill F3-2400C10D-8GTX will work (and its actually cheaper than the F3-17000CL9D-8GBXM)

Re: The ASrock FM2A88X Extreme6+ Memory list is useless.

Your last post does clarify an awful lot.

You weren't saying, as I originally understood your post to read, that the AsRock BOARD was incompatible with Kaveri APU's.
You were saying that the RAM list didn't separate between Kaveri and non-Kaveri APU processors, and you are quite correct.

Similarly, you weren't saying that the ASUS board was exclusively for Kaveri, but that the RAM list on the website give RAM listings for Kaveri APU's and non-Kaveri APU's separately.

Incidentally, sorry about the RAM reference link, you hadn't actually said you were in Australia (so am I, so I am perfectly aware of the difficulties we have down here getting some components) or I would have searched for something else. I have 4 suppliers here that I regularly go to for components.

I offer my apologies for the misunderstandings.

BTW, except as a price reference, I wouldn't bother looking at Newegg for availability, they don't ship to Australia, unless you arrange a quite expensive 3rd party option for yourself (as I found when I tried to buy something there).

OK suppose I have problems. G.Skill would probably swap the memory, but what if that doesn't fix the problem. When I attempt to get the motherboard swapped, won't they ask me to test it with memory from the QVL list?

Anyway, I will go with the ASUS motherboard now as its the only one currently supported by the opencl 1.2 with HSA beta (AnandTech Portal | AMD updates driver and programming tools roadmap for supporting HSA features in Kaveri)
Yes, I'm looking to get in early and learn about and develop applications with HSA technologies.
